I copied the dll file (containing the system icons) in XP over to my W2K computer. I've been able to change most of my standard W2K icons using a freeware utility. However, when i try to extract them using a freeware called Icon Digger, the icon looks completely washed out, almost to the point where it looks entirely gray. It's not just the XP icons either, i D/Led some icons off the I-net and some of them exhibit the same problem.
Does it have to do with XP using 32-bit icons and W2K uses another or are both OS 32 bit icons??

Darren, now i'm really perplexed. Based on what you said, i did not expecte to be able to extract those icons in full color.
However, I did some googling and found yet another icon extract utility that does a helluva job... it was able to extract the XP icons in question in full color. The utility gave me the option to extract it either 256 colors or 16 million colors... when i chose the latter, it extracted it perfectly.
It seems further that some icons are created in "full color" versus "32-bit"... I'm not an icon expert but it seems the first utility I tried didn't have the capability to see that difference.
You may have extracted them, but I'm not sure if Windows 98 will display the alpha information (transparency, shadows, etc) correctly. They will probably look jagged or have black around them. I haven't used Win98 in years, so I may be wrong.

That's exactly the problem i was having w/ the first utility I mentioned. Now I know what that alpha channel is for... thanks for the info. I'm running W2K BTW so it looks perfectly fine now, thanks.
WaWadave, the 2nd utility is called IcoFilter. You can get it here:
