I had surgery last week to do a bladder biopsy. The pathology came back yesterday, and I have stage II bladder cancer. It has already invaded the bladder muscle. I will start chemotherapy soon, then I will have surgery to remove my bladder. I think they gave me a 50/50 chance for survival. I may be absent from here for awhile...until I heal. If I'm not back in here for a long time, y'all should know what happened.

Damn, Darren...my wife just got the news that she has breast cancer...we
go in to Univ. of Mich. Cancer Center tomorrow, where she will be facing
chemo & radiation. Try and stay positive, Darren...easy to say, hard to
do...and we are finding that doing distracting things seems to help her.
You may be fortunate that they caught it in time...50-50 is much better
than 90-10. We will be pulling for you. I will say some old Sioux Indian prayers for you & face the Sun.

Dave, such a bummer to have a good friend such as you get such a raw trip. I wish your wife a swift recovery so she can get back to kicking your butt around the house. While she's recouping, be sure to keep things shipshape at home: No dust bunnies in the corners, that kind of thing. It'll be the first thing she notices when she gets back home (with the exception of you, of course :) )

Darren, fortunately you don't have Stage III or IV. Sure it would be better to have Stage I or none. But with Stage II you have a much better chance of full recovery and having a normal life (with some inconvenience) than if it had been caught later. And that is what I'm betting on and believing; that you will beat this.

I see my urologist on January 23 for her to explain the surgery in detail, the life-changing outcome and what to expect afterwards. I will then see my oncologist on January 24 for him the pick the best chemotherapy for my situation. I will go through chemo first, then afterwards, have the surgery to remove my cancerous bladder. If all goes well, I'll be facing at least 7 days in the hospital. I think the hospital has some WI-FI hotspots, so I may even bug y'all from there. All of you in this community are my friends, and I appreciate each and every one of you.

Hi All.... just an update on my dad he had the rest of the MUGA cocktail on the 12th the Vinblastine, Adriamycin, and Cisplatin
..We are two days after it now and he is very weak and in pain, (which greives me beyond belief) he is drinking plenty of fluids and eating good ..as far as i know he has not got sick just a lil nauseated more pain and weakness than anything ,He says that this is the worst he has ever felt in his life i just keep praying to god to take his pain away .I keep letting him know that he is strong and can make it through this !!!I kinda feel useless as his daughter not being able to comfort him i want to be able to heal his pain.:( (I know that this will be worth it when the cancer is gone)! But this is hard haveing the strongest person I've ever known go through this.Continue to keep him lifted up in prayers because we all know he needs it for strength (you guys just don't know how much you mean to him at this forum) he takes all the kind words & support yall give him here and it really helps him .When he first posted here the sucess stories and kind words really helped him cope he was telling all of us kids about it and seemed to have more hope than he had had. So From the bottom of my heart THANKS & LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!

Our friend Denbeau is in the hospital now after having two surgeries for colon cancer. He's supposed to be released tomorrow and the prognosis appears to be very good if I'm reading his wife's email correctly.
They had to go back in to clean up a hole from the first but things are in good shape according to Dennis and his wife.

I got some good news today. I saw my Oncologist and he said my cancer was caught at an early stage. With three rounds of chemotherapy, then the removal of my bladder, I will have near a 100% chance of being cured of cancer. He said there are two types of Chemo; the "normal" type and the "spicy" type. I will be getting the "spicy" type. He said I will get sick and loose my hair from the strong chemo. I go 29th of January to have a heart test because one of the chemicals can be really bad on the heart muscle. On the 30th I go to the hospital to have a "port" inserted into my upper arm. Finally on the 31st of January, I see the Oncologist to start my chemo. I will have a treatment every three weeks, and a total of three treatments. Afterwards, I will have the Radical Cystectomy.

An old friend took an anti-tank round in the pelvis during his tour in Nam (U.S. Marines). He had only a sliver of bladder material left along with a ton of other problems. The bladder is the only organ in the human body capable of rebuilding itself. In time, his bladder returned to its "normal" state. That guy is the heaviest beer guzzler I've ever known---surely evidence that his bladder must be a real tank.

As will the rest of the PCQ&A community, I'll be looking forward to your progress reports in the coming weeks. Good luck, my cyber friend.

I had my Port implanted today. I was awake during the procedure, but with the drugs they gave me, I didn't give a damn what they did to me. I felt nothing except the first couple of sticks for the lidocaine. It took about 30 minutes. I see my Oncologist tomorrow to find out when my first chemo treatment starts. I just thought I'd keep y'all updated.

Just be sure to keep the area around the injection port very clean so it does not get infected. My son had to do peritoneal dialysis before he got his kidney transplant and he had to keep his dialysis port very very clean to lesessen the chance of an infection starting there.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I had my first chemo today. They infused a bag of Zofran for nausea first, then the chemo drug itself (Methotrexate). It took about an hour. So far, I haven't experienced any side effects. I've drank about 7 bottles of water today.
Tomorrow, I will get the three remaining drugs from the "MVAC" cocktail (Vinblastine, Adriamycin and Cisplatin). That's the really "spicy" mixture and will take about six hours. They say I will be really weak and nauseous. I'm claiming I WONT be. We'll see. I skip a week after that, then start all over. I don't know how many cycles yet.

My wife dodged the Chemo bullet, Darren...biopsy was sent to a lab out
in Calif. who diagnosed it "low", meaning Chemo wasn't necessary, but
Radiation was. She is taking treatments right now at the University of
Michigan Cancer Center. Treatments are five days a week, for 6 weeks.
We are very optimistic about things. Hang in there, Darren...

UPDATE AGAIN

June 2, 2008 Daddy had the surgery to remove his bladder, amongst some other things, and when they got in there they saw that indeed the cancer was NOT contained inside the bladder and had spread out like a sheet behind his bowels. They removed all they could without running into major veins and arteries. He was in a lot of pain for about 3 hrs on June 4, 2008 after they removed his epidural.
Only GOD can change things now. Once he's better after surgery and healed they are talking about more chemotherapy and adding radiation this time, we'll have to see what daddy's decision is.
Thanks to everyone here for their prayers, but the journey isn't near over yet. Please continue to pray.

As of March 3, 2008 the first cycle of the chemo is completed.
Daddy will have 2 more cycles, and the 2nd cycle starts on March 10. March 11th will be the "D-Day" as they call it. The one that makes him weak, sick, and feel like he is dying, so keep him in your prayers especially on that day and for about a week to follow. After "D-Day" he'll have 2 more days of chemo and Cycle 2 will be over. Then that means 1 more full cycle then he gets his bladder removed and he'll be HEALED!! YAY!!

March 11th was a long, rough day for daddy.
He's still feeling the weakness and he said his bones are hurting it feels like. He's still doing pretty damned good though, if you ask me.
He's being very strong. :)

Darren, my wife just finished her Radiation treatments for breast cancer
yesterday. She got burned on her left side, neck, shoulder, breast,
chest...at UofM Cancer Center they said it was an unusually bad burn...

Darren, so sorry to hear the news - I know how upsetting it is.

Keep in mind that they are doing wonders with chemo and radiation these days. There is an article from Time magazine dated 4/9/07 (you can write to me at robtakendall@yahoo.com and I'll send you a scan) called "Living With Cancer" about Elizabeth Edwards, and how much progress we've made in the fight against cancer. Oncologists are excited to be oncologists, because drug companies are coming out with new cancer drugs all the time - if one drug doesn't work, they switch you to another.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, so I know where you're coming from. I was Stage I, and I'm doing fine; Stage II is better than a later stage. People are living with metastases for years instead of months; a few women in my bc group have had metastatic cancer for ten years, and they still look and feel fine. Seriously.

Please don't be too discouraged. Join a support group, that helps a lot. Let us know how you are doing - and don't hesitate to email me if you want a copy of that article. Roberta

Daddy is going home(to his parents, my grandparents)today or tomorrow. Not completely sure of which, but I'll definitely tell him that you all have him in your thoughts and prayers. Yesterday was a good day for him. He was up and walking around the hospital(they asked him to walk) and eating a little(cant eat much due to the extensive surgery). I believe with all my heart that he is gonna be healed of this and that he will live a much longer, happy life. He's still gotta see those grandkids grow up (hehe)!

well sorry it took so long for this but its been a long journey after surgery to remove his bladder my dad went through 2 more rounds of chemo and finished sept 24th he seemed to be gettin strength back and had been deemed in remission .2 weeks after comepleteing chemo he started uncontrollably vomiting so we thought he had got the stomache virus he went all day and on into the night so we called 911 he ended up being admited to the hospital where we found out through scans a tumor had grown pressing on his doedenum, makeing him unable to process food. the tumor that is pressing on his duodenum was the cancer that originated in his bladder that had spread .well they wanted to do an operation to make him able to eat normal foods so he could get strenghth and do more chemo and also some radiation but he was to weak to reroute his intestines to the stomach so they installed a stomach compression tube and a feeding tube . he can no longer eat by mouth only drink liquids but his stomach tube sucks it right out into another bag to keep it from building up . he has his feeding tube which we feed him ensure plus (his only form of nutrition)it goes right into his intestines to hopefully give him good nutrition.he went home and two weeks laterhe ended up in the hospital again he got sooooo dehydrated we have to give him water in his intestines with his food and he didn't get enough in him to keep him hydrated which we all do with pride bc we love him and want to take care of him).he received fluids and is home now and came home with hospice care to help us and him (he wants to stay at home)monday of this week he ended up in the hospice center bc his nurse was concerned bc we havent been able to keep his bowels going like they should so they took him to the inpatient facily to work that out and to manage his pain meds bc his dosage is no longer effective so there monitoring him as they up the dosage .he called yesterday and informed me that his food isnt setteling anymore its giving him exstreme colic and makeing him so sick so they had to stop it he was contantly vomiting untill they did so they are trying other kinds of tube foods which there isnt that many choices but the doc said he isnt giving up on him hes gonna find something that will agree with him he needs this nutrition desperately.i still have a glimmer of hope that he can get strong do the rerouting of his intestines and do radiation and chemo but if he chooses not to then its his choice and ill be there for him the cancer had not only spread in his abdomen but also he has traces in his bones also a peanut size in his lungs. the docs want him to keep fighting but he says he is too weak and too tierd to fight anymore well all I can say from here is when you pray pray for my family and I this is very hard on all of us love you guys ill be in touch asap

Thanks for all the kind words my brother was with him today and said they are still haveing problems getting the food in him they started the gravity pump and he felt like he was going to vomit so they again had to shut it down in hopes that he wont get sick so he can absorb the vitamins but other than that he said my dad isnt in so much pain today and his bowels are moveing as they should so thats good im going to spend the night with him saturday cant wait if i had a choice id never leave his side but i cherish every moment im with him

I think he has made the right decision. There comes a point when conditions dictate the pain of living outweighs the value of continuing a diminished quality of life. I hope when my time comes I can have the courage that he has shown.

Well stated, Shelly. I agree, 100%. Darren is very lucky to have loved ones who respect his wishes and don't selfishly try any and everything to prolong his life, thereby, prolonging his intense agony.

your news from Kayle. My sister-in-law was just operated on for stomach cancer...had lots of little tumors...the operation lasted 11 hours! She went through chemo for awhile after that...and the doctor
says she's doing fine. She's out shopping...drving her car, going to
have her nails done. Looks like she's going to make it.

We are all hoping you do, too, Darren...your glass is half full (50-50)

yup i havent posted in pcq&a too been sick n also just tierd . well docs came in and said what ever he is chewing on and eating on its makeing its way past the tumor and giving him nutrients bc its makeing him survive lol the doc said anyone else wouldnt be sustained without proper food hes been eating alot of stuff like pomagranets peanutbutter oranges grapefruit n spiting it out just takeing juice from stuff of chewing very fine but the doc said he is being sustained from it told him to keep beleiveing for his miracle lol so i am

I Just wanted all to know my father passed away last night at 7:55 pm all of us were there as he took his last breath telling him we loved him and its ok . he took a turn for the worst we all got the call thanksgiving day and shot up there as soon as we could we never left his side i tell you what this is so hard but i know he isnt suffering anymore

It is wonderful that Darren is no longer suffering. What a relief it must be for him, and, you and his other loved ones. This news was the "falling of the second shoe". The first was the announcement of the cancer and its intensity. Darren was one ultra-cool dude. His knowledge and humanity will be missed in this household. That's for sure.
