That was a very good video. One thing I would like to point out is on the heat sink/fan assembly at the bottom where it connects into the mother board. There is a little plastic white pin that splits in two. Be very careful when inserting them into the board they can spread apart very easily and not go in properly. I just helped a guy who had a warranty motherboard replacement and afterward his system kept crashing and it destroyed his Vista installation. He asked me to take a look at it. I checked his temps. He was running at over 90C. I checked the heat sink and they did not install it correctly. One of the little plastic pins spread apart and did not firmly seat into the board. It was very tricky to get them all in. Good thing it was brand new he did not loose much.

Tip:

Once you've "set" the heatsink/hsf, even though you haven't engaged the push pins, do not pick it back up!

You know that pre-applied thermal material that was on the bottom of heatsink ...

Oh, & also, don't let your father (one of those poky types - pokes his finger into everything), touch the top of the CPU core.


Anyhow, a little alcohol on core top, set the heatsink back down (even with the now disturbed thermal material) & it appears to be working OK.

The video pretty much had it covered.

Examining the M/B contact array & the CPU pads, well for me, they might as well have been invisible.

Matching the notches is easy, but "knowing" if it was actually inserted correctly (i.e. without "pin damage") is anyone's guess.


It's easier once you have actually done it, then it is going through all the steps you prepare for when viewing the video.


It's even easier (on the mind), once you've started the computer & it actually works.

Temperatures.
Intel Core 2 Duo, E4300.


BIOS.
Everest.
Speedfan.
MBProbe.
Core Temp.

You get varying, results.


On first install, boot into BIOS, showed CPU 33 MB 28.
Then still sitting there, after a while, they climbed to around 39.
Left overnight, in the morning, BIOS showed around 33.

Installed OS.
MBProbe.
HeavyLoad & Passmark BurnInTest.

MBprobe showed mid 30's.

Installed Speedfan.
Same temps, CPU/MB, but in addition it showed Core 0/1 low 30's.

Left at idle for a while.
Temp showed low to mid 30's.
Core showed low 20's.

Everest Stability Test.
Core 32/31 range.
Temp started 33 range, but after a few minutes, jumped to 127. And stayed there for a long while. Eventually MB came back down to 33, but CPU flatlined at 127. Ran like that for about 45 minutes.
(The 127 had to have been a fluke.)

Rebooted.
BIOS showed CPU 38, MB 33.

Restarted Everest Stability Test. Same time "running" an A/V scan (MWAV).
Core 32/31 range.
Temp 33 range & steady for the past hour+.

At the same time, Core Temp is showing Core at 48, steady. Seems to be my peak.
(Mild temperatures here, about 68 F.)


(Everest version used was older, so perhaps a current version would show Core more accurately?)

Yes, in the current (beta) version of Everest, the Core temperatures displayed mimic those given by Core Temp.

Hi. I didn't see where you list what Core 2 Duo you have but I have

the Core2 Duo Extreme Conroe and it runs a lot hotter than my old

AMD 64. So I just installed a ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm 2 Ball

Fan with Heatsink (about $60.00) So now instead of 40-50 degree C

it is usually at 20-30 degree C. Yes, temp has dropped that much. It

is an awesome design heatsink and with arctic silver therm paste, temp

has dropped 10-20 degree C.

I am very happy with the Core2 Extreme. I think it is worth the

money. If you have not bought your chip yet, consider the Extreme.

I have heard you can buy a cheaper chip and seriously overclock it to

get similar performance. I did not do that because I don't have the

tech knowledge and it requires "Extreme Heavy Duty Cooling System"

E4300 retail, with stock HS/F.

My temps seem fine.
CPU fan runs around 2000 RPM.

And it is quiet !
