The New York Times notes that "even before the vote on Thursday, the Democrats began articulating the message that is likely to be their mantra for months: the Republican minority in the Senate is defying the will of a majority of Congress and a majority of Americans by blocking legislation to hasten the end of the war.

The current United States Senate is made up of 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and 2 Independents who caucus with the Democrats, one of whom is a adamant hawk. It requires 60 ayes to send anything to the President. And then, should he decide to excercise the veto, it would require two-thirds to override it. Do the math.

If you think that this situation will be to the advantage of Republicans November '08, you are dreaming in Technicolor. Come next summer, when the Republicans who have to face their party primaries next spring, have secured their nominations, they will be abandoning Bush's sinking ship in droves. Otherwise they face certain annihilation.

But it would be more encouraging if the rest of the electorate proved a bit more savvy than you appear to be.
