Posted by Shelly, Fri Dec-03-04 07:40 PM
It was mentioned in the off topic forum that a regular here, Sonny (Sonny Ryder) has not posted in about two months, nor has he turned in any UD results. I sent an e-mail to his Earthlink address and it came back saying that the mailbox was full. This is kind of ominous. I have no other way to contact him.

He lives in Greensboro, NC, if anyone lives nearby to him or knows him up there it would be appreciated if they could try to contact him and let us know if everything is alright.

Your right Shelly. I'm glad you brought that to our attention. There are so many good people here that they kind of get lost in the crowd.

Sure hope everything is OK with him.

Im glad it was a mistake, but Sonny was special to me and to so many others. He wasn't just a stranger to me nor to many others who frequent this forum. He will always be missed by the many here who he unselfishly and graciously helped. His outstanding personality came through his posts and we miss him greatly and still mourn his loss. This forum is populated by many very caring and competent regulars ... a real rarity on the internet.

yea, but the regulars know where to post, anyone who bothered to review the forum would plainly see this was a tribute post to a friend who passed. It's you who lack the sensativity, posted lower noone would have bothered you, but intruding on a tribute post is rude and lacks respect for our members much less the man we lost.

I checked the on-line obits in the Greensboro paper, and Mr. Samuel B. "Sammy" Ryder passed away in mid October, age 79. I don't know "Sonny" so I can't say if he and "Sammy" are one and the same.

I had checked online earlier via http://www.ussearch.com and came up two Samuel B. Ryders, one 79 and one 59. Could be a typo. I figured Sonny to be in his 50's or 60's.

But his not posting and a full mailbox has me concerned.

That late 50's or early 60's age is about right. Sonny and I were both from the D.C. area originally. We often traded war stories about the Redskins.

I've found that Samuel B. Ryder, 79, and son, Samuel B. Ryder,III, approximately 59, both passed away in Greensboro, NC during October, 2004.

We'll have to investigate further to determine if Samuel B. Ryder, III, is indeed Sonny. :-(

I have found from what I consider a reliable source in Greensboro, that Samuel B. Ryder, III, who passed away during early October, 2004, was indeed our forum's Sonny.

I can only tell you that the person I spoke with was clearly affected by my short story about our forum and the UD project. I provided links to the forum and my name and phone number in case they wish to call back. I did not want to risk further upsetting anyone, including me. When we finished our phone conversation, I was misty-eyed.

Sonny was one of the reasons I became so interested in PC911 and PCQ&A, which have proven to be great sources of learning for many. Sonny's desire to educate and assist others truly helped this forum grow.

I have missed his helpful posts and enthusiasm for the forum, support for United Devices, and those great animations in his sigs. I think my favorite animation was "dancing Snoopy." I'll never again see Snoopy without thinking of Sonny and the positive outlook he projected.

Although I am only an infrequent poster (usually when I am in it up to my nose), I would like to add my sorrow at the passing of Sonny.

People of his calibre, who help others in times of need and are 'just there', are harder to find these days. People just seem to have gotten so insular.

PCQandQ has helped many, including myself, solve their issues. But is so much more than a collective of bright minds. May Sonny's spirit of helpfulness continue to grow amongst everyone who frequents this forum.

When I ventured for the first time to built my first PC about 2 and half years ago, everything I knew about computers was from the outside, not from the inside. I still have a fresh memory of my initial questions which I posted on this forum and Sonny was of the first to reply. I asked what I must assemble before I begin. He recited some items and then added something like don't forget to get an extra bag of screws. And if you run into problem, post again and we will guide you through.

Those words--pure, simple and free of condescension--lifted my morale and sustained me throughout the ideal--for an ordeal it was. The PC won't boot! Sonny, along with a few other memembers of this Forum, stayed with me until the project was successfully completed.
Sonny's presence was comforting beyond belief.

Sonny, you were like a father to me, holding my hand as I struggled to learn how to stand. I owe you an eternal and lasting debt of gratitude which I can never repay. The like of you I may not see again for some time to come.

If perchance you can still hear and understand me, let me then bid you farewell in words borrowed from the immortal bard:

Now cracks a noble heart,
Good night, sweet prince
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Like many others on this Forum, I will miss your wisdom and kindness.

I must say I was astonished at the number of posts on this item.

I have Parkinson's Disease and have not mowed a lawn or worked on an
auto in 10 years. It takes me 15 minutes to type one line of text.

The only person I would expect to inquire for me after my passing is
a BILL COLLECTOR.

But I would say the collective spirit on 'pcqanda' is ADMIRABLE.

I have been away for a week with no access to a PC,or I would have immediately posted/tried his phone number.I had it from over a year ago when he was nice enough to guide me through my first encounter with Partition Magic over the phone.

We had several common interests...the Redskins for one,and the fact I live/have lived in parts of Richmond,Va. which he had also.

To all,
I did not mean to imply that "Sonny" was anything less than an
excellent man and a worthwhile contributor to this forum.

Reflecting on all the posts (and there were quite a few) and my
own relation to the "pcqanda" forum, I am still amazed (literally)
at the response to "Sonny's" passing. I think the matter is that
I (and perhaps others) have never developed a strong PERSONAL
connection to pcqanda. I support the work and have made some
minor contributions from time to time but my relation is more
of a formal/technical relation. I would like to develop a more
personal relationship if some of the reigning gurus would care to
enlighten this Electrical Engineer who has spent his life and
career in the academic/corporate technical trenches which I
understand from talking to people who have traveled to the
"outside" can grow to be quite isolated from the "real world".

with my usual inebriated smiley.)

Sonny helped me often when I was first playing with the idea of upgrading my OS. For that I am grateful. I am very sorry he is gone.
God Bless - Sonny :-(

Hi Arnold,I seldom post without using the "clown" no matter what the subject. It reminds me not to take my or other comments in anything but a positive or humerous (if they sound a little raw)light.By now you should realize that this place is SPECIAL.The moderators and members are a second family to me.As a Newbie I have recieved more help than I ever imagined on all phases of my computer education and about the world around me.I learn as much by reading answers to others computer questions as by those I ask and have never failed to get a fix. What ever it takes to type stay in touch with this site. You are a member of the PCQandA family and THAT makes YOU special,Sincerely,John :+

I too am very sad to hear of this. I myself have been away from this board for long while with all kinds of things going on in life.
As many others have stated, Sonny helped me with some of my first problems and questions in quite a patient manner. Sonny, Shelly and Grogan are some of the main reasons this board kept me coming back for more all the time, and still does. I was looking forward, this trip back to seeing what was posted recently, but feel an empty spot where there should be replies from Sonny.

Rest In Peace
I'm sure your still helping people out wherever you are.

Shelly, I've been gone a good while, and on my return to PC911, your post about Sonny was the first post I saw. I would like to extend my personal condolences to Sonny's family (if they should happen to visit this site) and to all of his PC911 Family whom I am positive miss him greatly.

I personally had the privilege of working with him on some issues with my PC some time back, and I found him to be a "...gentleman and a scholar...". I told him that in a post and we joked about it.

And that was when I learned that he was a REAL Southern Gentleman.

He also, as others have noted, was so willing to help those of us who are minimally knowledgeable about computers, and never made fun of us.

He became my friend.

Best Wishes to you for the Season and have a wonderful 2005!

I too have not been visiting here as often as I use to. It is in deed a sad day to hear about Sonny. He was always there to help.
