I think Florida should cast off the lines, hoist anchor, and sail out of harms way for the rest of the season.

The 5am forecast was pointed right at Melbourne, now its pointed at Jax. We will decide Wed am whether to bail out or not, since by Friday there could be literally a million people on the highway out of here.

Ya'll are right, this ones gonna be a big bad storm. I know people all the way up here in South Carolina already getting the hell out of this one's way. I've been tracking it for a while myself and I think it's going to go north, making landfall around Charleston. of course I'm not betting on that. only fool's bet on the weather. This is an infrared satellite shot. Look at the size of it compared to the previous storms we've had this year.

Right now the storm is projected to make landfall near Daytona, and proceed right through Jacksonville. I have been studying the computer models and they are all over the place, so anything can happen, and probably will. Here are the projections of four of the most reliable computer models:

That's about what we are seeing from most all of the 'prediction' sites including the National Hurricane Center. Earlier today JAX was the number one target....then a Francis hiccup sent the expectations more southerly. Whatever, the entire east coast of Florida, and especially the Daytona to Jacksonville area had best get their peanut butter and crackers in a safe and dry spot.

OrchidBill has a generator, gasoline, propane, charcoal, etc. all stashed......so he ain't leaving. However he does worry about all these huge oak trees looking down at him.

Vitalt would be leavin even if he had all that stuff...got up this morning and the prediction was between Sebastian and Melbourne...lets see its 16 miles south to Sebastian and 15 miles north to Melbourne from here...yep...big ol Bullseye on this house...then tis Jacksonville Now its cocoa...guess i wont have to worry about going to work if it hits there...

Spent all day today putting up shutters and only half done. Finish tomorrow I hope. I think at the very least West Palm will get 70 mph winds. That is one huge hurricane.

There are some signs developing that the high pressure ridge south of bermuda is weakening. If this continues the track of the storm will shif toward the north and could miss Florida. The folowing is the latest discussuion released by the Hurricane Prediction Center:

WTNT41 KNHC 012052
TCDAT1
HURRICANE FRANCES DISCUSSION NUMBER 32
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
5 PM EDT WED SEP 01 2004

AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE PLANE FLEW AGAIN IN THE EYE OF FRANCES
AND ESTIMATED A MINIMUM PRESSURE OF 938 MB. THE CLOUD TOPS HAVE
WARMED BUT THE PLANE MEASURED 131 KNOTS AT FLIGHT LEVEL. THE
INITIAL INTENSITY IS KEPT AT 120 KNOTS. THE OFFICIAL INTENSITY
FORECAST CALLS FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING
DURING THE NEXT DAY OR TWO AS INDICATED BY THE SHIPS MODEL...BUT
MOST LIKELY THE HURRICANE WILL GO THROUGH INTENSITY FLUCTUATIONS
DURING EYEWALL REPLACEMENT CYCLES. IF FACT...THE 1719Z RECON FIX
REPORTED A DOUBLE EYEWALL SUGGESTING THAT ANOTHER OF THESE
PROCESSES IS TAKING PLACE. THE HURRICANE IS FORECAST TO REACH THE
U.S. COAST AS A MAJOR HURRICANE.

DATA FROM THE STEPPED FREQUENCY MICROWAVE RADIOMETER...SFMR...ON
BOARD THE NOAA P3 AIRCRAFT WERE USED TO DECREASE THE WIND RADII
ESTIMATES IN THE NORTHWEST QUADRANT. BECAUSE THE NW WIND RADII ARE
SMALLER THAN PREVIOUSLY ANALYZED...THE ISSUANCE OF A HURRICANE
WATCH FOR THE FLORIDA EAST COAST CAN BE DELAYED A LITTLE.

FRANCES IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST OR 290 DEGREES AT 13
KNOTS AROUND THE PERIPHERY OF THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE. HOW FAR WEST
THE HURRICANE WILL GO WILL DEPEND ON THE FUTURE STRENGTH OF THE
RIDGE AND THAT VARIES FROM MODEL TO MODEL. THE GFS AND THE GFDL
CONSISTENTLY WEAKEN THE RIDGE AND TURN THE HURRICANE NORTHWESTWARD
EARLIER THAN ANY OTHER MODELS. BECAUSE THE GFS AND GFDL MODELS ARE
VERY RELIABLE...I WAS TEMPTED TO SHIFT THE TRACK A LITTLE BIT TO
THE NORTH AND EAST AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER...THE FLORIDA STATE
UNIVERSITY SUPER-ENSEMBLE AND THE CONU CONSENSUS...WHICH CONSISTS
OF THE AVERAGE OF THE GFDL...GFDN...GFS...NOGAPS AND UKMET
MODELS...BRING THE HURRICANE ON A WEST-NORTHWEST TRACK ACROSS
FLORIDA. THEREFORE...I AM NOT READY TO MAKE THE NORTHWARD SHIFT AT
THIS TIME AND THE OFFICIAL FORECAST REMAINS AS IN THE PREVIOUS
ADVISORY...VERY CLOSE TO THE CONSENSUS AND BASICALLY ON TOP OF THE
FSU SUPER-ENSEMBLE.

Well You all take care down there. If ya seen pictures of what just happened in Richmond, VA. They don't need no more rain but it looks like we are gonna get some of it. I live 50 miles north of there and all we got was some mild rain. GOOD LUCK ALL.

Same to you Ted...thanks!

We ordered storm panels last weekend...expect delivery in 3 weeks. Seems as though the storm shutter/panel folks are seriously backlogged after Charley.
God I hate this!

I learned the hard way that in a hurricane, if high water is the threat, you can be better off removing your doors and windows. The water is going to get in there anyway, and in our house on Cape Cod, hurricane Bob did the most damage by having the water rush out of the house as the storm surge receded.

Big changes today. The track of the storm has been shifted south and west, due to a developing new high pressure area in the south eastern US. It looks like I dodged the bullet once again, the eye should miss Jacksonville by over 150 miles. Just 48 hours ago we were in the cross hairs. I expect the track to be depressed even further to the west tomorrow. We will probably receive some tropical storm level winds of about 40 to 45 MPH and much rain, 8 to 10 inches, since we will be in the NE quadrant of the storm. The computer models are now in general agreement on the path.

The latest prediction has shifted the storm track about 50 miles to the east at my latitude so the storm will now pass within about 100 miles of Jacksonville. This is in close accord with the latest computer models.

After Charley, I've learned my lesson. We're acting as if it's heading directly for us even though those 11AM forecasts have moved it over 50 miles to the east. The rain/flood factor looks to be the most significant right now. It's a huge storm moving very slowly.
The previous path had it aimed directly at us here in Pasco County...New Port Rickety.

This storm appears to be re-intensifying. It looks like Frances picked up a shot of dry air that helped weaken it but Frances appears to be showing stronger convection and increasing symmetry while crossing the Gulf Stream. Outflow still is strong. Watch out for possible CAT 3 or stronger status at landfall.

Check out this animated loop.

The 5 PM update has it aimed right back at us again.
The "good" news is the local forecaster who made the accurate call on Charley, using VIPIR(don't ask me), is saying that VIPIR is calling for it to stay off of the east coast of Florida...the eye pretty much staying right near the coast.
The forecaster is Steve Jerve at WFLA, the NBC affiliate in Tampa. He's giving a strong disclaimer to not give too much creedence to any of the forecasting software.

Well, the predicted path has shifted about 40 miles west again. The bad thing is that it has slowed to a crawl and has been nearly stationary over the Bahamas all day. The most recent IR loop looks like the eye is tightening again and trying to reform. It's over 85+ degree water again and could intensify. When they slow down like this they can radically change direction, so none of us are out of the woods. If it moves across Florida this slowly it could drop over 20 inches of rain, and cause serious flooding.

I filled up three gas bottles for the grill today, if the power goes out it's the only way I'll have to cook. I picked up a two week supply of bagels and cream cheese, so I'm pretty well set with all the essentials. The worst thing so far is that the computer show scheduled for this weekend has been canceled. The wimps!

Shelly, I agree with you 100% on the uncertainty. This storm may still run up the coast and cause much grief in Georgia and the Carolinas. If the dry air over the northeast Gulf and central Florida breaks down, Frances could easily tighten-up again.

Miztrial has already had a major hit from Charley. I hope she's ready for this one.

This the lastest radar information from a weather bulletin I received from Storma Team 8

CURRENT RADAR INFORMATION...

OUTER BAND FROM HURRICANE FRANCES CONTINUE TO MOVE QUICKLY WEST AND

SOUTHWESTWARD. ONE BAND HAS MOVED OFF THE COAST INTO THE EASTERN GULF

OF MEXICO...WHILE ANOTHER HAS FORMED ALONG PEACE RIVER AND WILL MOVE

WESTWARD AT 20 MPH. WIND GUSTS AS HIGH AS 50 MPH ARE POSSIBLE WITH

THE STRONGEST SHOWERS...WITH MORE GENERAL WIND GUSTS FROM 30 TO 40

MPH. ADDITIONAL BANDS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AND MOVE WESTWARD

THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON.

...WIND INFORMATION...

FRANCES WILL MOVE SLOWLY ACROSS INLAND COUNTIES SUNDAY PRODUCING NEAR

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS THAT WILL WEAKEN AS THE STORM CONTINUES WEST

NORTHWEST ACROSS THE FLORIDA PENINSULA. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS

OF 35 TO 50 MPH...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER GUSTS...CAN BE EXPECTED OVER

WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TONIGHT AND SUNDAY. THE STRONGEST

WINDS WILL BE LOCATED NEAR THE CENTER OF FRANCES AS IT TRACKS ACROSS

THE REGION.

This information is what I am concerned with , tides and storm surge doesn't come this far inland so I don't worry about these problems.

The only good news I can give you is that it will take Frances 24 hours to cross the Florida peninsula at the expected forward speed of movement, so it will be reduced to a moderate tropical storm by the time the center reaches you, perhaps 45 to 55 MPH winds. The bad news for the east coast is that the storm has nearly stalled over the very warm gulf stream and is showing signs of intensification. The thunderstorm convection gas encircled the eye and the eye is getting smaller again, It could reach Category 3 again before landfall in the Ft. Pierce area about 60 miles north of W Palm Beech. Because of the slow movement it will drop huge amounts of rain on areas that are already saturated.

The storm is now beating on the entire state with various degrees of severity. Every once in a while my power blinks, last night I was awakened by all my UPS's beeping, the power was off for about three minutes and then returned. There are now about 3,000,000 people in florida without power.

The storm track has jogged slightly more northward but nothing very significant to the overall path across the state.

Still have my fingers crossed. We left home in Melbourne on Wednesday and have been here in Atlanta since. The only question at this point seems to be whether the damage to our place is moderate or severe. We will try to head home on Tuesday, but might not get there until Wednesday depending on traffic.

Will try to contact some of our neighbors tonight or tomorrow to get a report.

The storm is still building here, it is still about 175 miles from me. I just checked around the house, there are a few small tree limbs down in the back yard, wind is gusty, and much rain. These reports are frequent, since I have no way of knowing if, or when, I will lose power.

As of 3:00 am EDT I unplugged my computer and went to bed for some badly needed sleep. It has been a long day here with the wind and rain getting heavier and stronger. Son Todd was out front in the hallway where the front door is with his camera getting some photos when he heard metal grinding noises. It looks like our tv antenna is bent completely over onto the roof but no damage to the roof. Our soloa panel is still intact and working. We use it to heat water for the hot water heater supply. I made it thru with minimal damage here in Lakeland.

We're back up for now. It's still in Hillsborough County(Tampa), to our south, moving towards northern Pinellas(Palm Harbor/Tarpon Springs). The current forecast is calling for it to ramp back up to a Cat 1 hurricane with plenty of wind and rain hitting us from th south as it moves along the gulf coast towards the Panhandle and Alabama.
While we've had some pretty heavy wind and some moderate rains, the areas to our South and East have been really hammered. Polk County is still getting nailed with some residual bands. We need to keep Miztrial in our prayers. The storm parked over her neighborhood today.
One of the WFLA camera crews caught 3 different sets of creeps breaking into and looting a convenience store to steal cigs and things. The camera man called 911 and all the guilty jerks were caught. Yeah for the good guys...'specially that camera man! Let's hope they get Miztrial as their judge

I'm back. I didn't lose power, but the cable went out around 9:00PM. I had just written a reply to Mickster's post as follows:

Thanks for checking in Michael, we were getting a little worried about you. No doubt Anne's power is out, but she will check in when she can.

When I pressed the Post button nothing happened, I looked at the modem and saw the Cable LED was dark. The cable came back on about 1:00AM.

The wind howled all night, and the rain kept coming. When I got up this morning the winds were lighter. I went out and checked the rain gage and found 5.8 inches in it. How much rain passed it going horizontal I don't know. It will be raining the rest of the day, another 4" are predicted. The storm is now centered 141 miles to the SW and getting closer. The track turned more northerly for the last few hours, but is still projected to make landfall again around Apalachicola in the panhandle. It's over the warm water in the Gulf of Mexico now and will probably re intensify to hurricane strength.

I checked around the house and I don't seem to have any damage so far. There are a lot of branches down, and there is a 6"x6" 8 foot long fence post laying in my yard, I have no idea where it came from.

Many people here have not been as lucky, there were a number of tornadoes, one about 2 miles from me. Hundreds of thousands in Jacksonville are without power. There are many flooded areas, and many traffic lights are not working. Lots of huge trees are down, some hundreds of years old. Some are in the roads, many fell on houses and vehicles. Later I'll try to get to my office to see if there was any damage there, and if I can open tomorrow.

Thanks Shelly! Be careful!
The backside of this sucker has been worse than the front. The rain and wind was much worse over night than yesterday as it was rolling by...and it did pass over just to our north which was ideal for us. It actually hit the Gulf through Hudson/Aripeka. We were very, very lucky.
I'm still worried about the tornadoes which are coming with the backside of the storm. Polk and Hardee Counties have gotten the bulk but some have been sighted in a few other counties too.

Mickster, I made it thru with no damage other than my tv antenna. We lost power last night at about 6:30 pm my time. Sleep was impossible with the heat in the house and a sign outside being whipped back and forth making a noise that made it impossible to sleep. Power was restored at about 2:00 pm tmy time today.

I'm glad to hear you got through so well!
I know the feeling about sleeping....I was awakedned about 2 AM when a really heavy duty band rolled through with some 65+MPH winds and rain went through. That kept me up 'till daylight and beyond.
The streeet in our new community is a mess...It looks like 1 inch thick asphalt which is getting ground up with a pass over by any vehicles. We may be stuck here for awhile.

***We actually got out to the local Publix grocery store and made a run over to checkout my mother's condo. There were a lot of downed trees and resulting structural damage to homes in the older part of our community, River Ridge in New Port Richey. Power is out just down the street from us and has been since yesterday. Many of the gas station were out of most fuels although the 7-11's seemd to have total availability.

I'm back again, my cable went out at about 11:00AM yesterday and it's still out, so I had no internet at home. I'm in my office now. Hurricane Ivan is about to hit the Lesser Antilles, and the projected path id to go over the western tip of Cuba and then into the Gulf of Mexico. Historically many storms on this path have hit the Florida Keys.

We are still having rain bands from Frances going through Jacksonville, and don't expect to see sunshine until Thursday. We have also been averaging about one tornado warning an hour in the region. There was another 2.4 inches of rain in my gage this morning, and it is raining steadily now.

Our power came back on at 1:15 this morning, what a lovely sound and sight! I was so excited that I stayed up until almost 3, turning off the generator, rolling up cords and replugging refrigerators etc.

During that tornado warning that mickster talked about I managed to to grab my little battery powered TV, call my neighbors to tell them to get in their closets or bathrooms and hide in my own closet! Thankfully it passed us by and apparently noone was hurt.

My roof has some more leaks which means more pots and towels on the floor. You can't get a roofing company to even come by for an estimate. Most have said 4-6 weeks. My screen porch almost got finshed off with what was left after Charley. Still no sign of my insurance adjuster, he had to be evacuated as well!

My 97 year old Mother was evacuated to here from Melbourne (Indialantic) on Thursday along with her caretaker, caretaker's boyfriend and his dog and was finally able to go home today. Whew! She has a little cottage on her property which amazingly still has power though the main house does not. Anyone from Melbourne area have a clue when all the power will be restored?

Needless to say we are all watching Ivan with trepidation and keeping our generators and gas cans ready!

As to the looters......grrrr! I wish I could say how I REALLY feel about them. Luckily for them I'm on "vacation" this week as I was scheduled to go on a cruise last Saturday. It took Holland America forever to finally say they would refund all of our money, but not for 4-6 weeks which I let them know in no uncertain terms was NOT exceptable since they've had the use of my money since June! Not that they care about my opinions

Anyhow, all is mainly well here and thanks to all for the good wishes for us poor battered Floridians. It's still a great place to live!

Im back what a drive...got charged 78bucks a night per room at a days in in summerton...dont stop there the regular rate is 39 bucks around town..found an econolodge in manning 5 miles down the road that was 39 and freshly renovated. It was kind of wierd to realize the house was being hammered by francis while looking at all the damage that still shows from Hugo.I left yesterday and drove to Jacksonvill to enjoy some of shelly's fine liquid sunshine and spent the night at a Best western...again for 39 bucks.btw all the generators in manning summerton and columbia were gone from all the major chains..I found a guy out in the boondocks that had 23 5250watt generators for 799 each so i bought one there and found a tiny sears outlet that had 3000 watters for 399.00.I got two there.Ice is nonexistant from jacksonville south and bread is the same way. There was no power on 95 between jacksonville and daytona except for one exit,,or so a state trooper told me at the rest stop.Getting gas is a joke...keep em full if you can.two days to do a normal 8 hour drive...what a trip...both ways.
On arrivel in melbourne/palm bay i saw a lot of downed trees missing shingles and some roof damage. One building had its second story blown away and was burned to the ground.I was lucky...I lost a lowquat(sp) tree, some shingles,my sattelite dish and tv antennae.I used shingle pieces from someone elses roof that were in my yard to patch mine for now...(dont know whos they were different colored sections).Power was out so two fridges and a freezer full got trashed today...what a waste...luckily everything seems pretty much ok except for the minor things i mentioned.Driving with no stop lights working is pretty interesting. It seems some dont know what a 4 way stop is and run the non functioning lights. No alcohol is being sold in town right now ..why i dont know.A section of us1 is washed out around malabar road in palm bay so it pretty much impassable there for now.power outage is rampant.many people have no water.I am lucky to have everything running.I plan to loan out the generators and gas to the people i find that need it for now since my power is on.Has anyone heard from Jack or Balo?Anyone south of here or in west palm?I hope they are ok...

Hello Ted. Jack is Okay. Thanks for asking. Took a few days for the power & phone to return. Only minor damage to PVC fence. We had a lot of flooding and power poles down all over the city. The duration of Frances was the longest I can ever remember. I hope all is well with you and the rest of the Florida gang.

Just a little reminder to all of us in the areas hit by Frances and/or Charley....
Emotions are running very high after 3 weeks of this stuff and the possibility of more coming. Those folks in the stores and assistance programs are doing their best(for the most part). Bad attitude, impatientce and general funk aimed at the service personnel only slows things down for everybody.
Please check your emotions at the door and help them to do their jobs.
We've all been affected by these storms.

Got back to Melbourne on Tuesday. Some damage to home; 10% of shingles gone, but planned new roof next year anyway. A little water damage in two guest bedrooms, and two panels of pool screen damaged. All in all, very lucky.

DSL came back up this am. Be 10 days until tv satellite can be re-set.

Three neighbors stayed thu storm. All agree, NEVER again.

I'd guess 20-25% still without power. This am first time supermarket has had meat and milk. Be back to normal in a couple more days as long as that damn Ivan stays away.

I couldn't agree with you more mickster! Two nights ago we went to the Olive Garden just to get something warm to bring home. They were swamped and running behind on the takeout counter. A young woman was standing there waiting as well and said that she had been there for 30 minutes. Then her husband came stomping in and started raising cain about how absurd the wait was and he wanted to see the manager! I sweetly suggested that he might look around and take into consideration that probably the people working there and eating there were as tired from the storm and without power in their homes as I was and perhaps he was and told him he really was being quite rude! He stared at me as though I were crazy, harumphed and stalked out, leaving his poor embarassed wife standing there. Thanks for the reminder mickster, storms bring out the best in us for the most part, but there are always those who think they are more important than anyone else!

#98. "RE: Hurricane Francis...aftermath"
In response to jujet84 (Reply # 97)

We're getting soaked by Francis up here in Ohio, with up to 11 inches of rain in some areas and more coming today. Lots of flooding, and part of an Interstate under water. Francis is still taking a toll with a couple of deaths directly related to it's being here.

Corky just flew to Cleveland from Tampa today. Don't think she packed her scubasuit.

She'll find clear skies when she gets there, we finally got sunshine this evening with the setting sun. Francis spent herself out on top of the Buckeye state, she is now only broken up remnants. With post #100 of this thread, I can declare Francis dead.

Deland, Florida got a good spanking from Hurricane Charlie...but Mother Nature wasn't satisfied with Charlie's work so she sent a woman to do the job right!!

Francis gave us a good ass-whipping and major landscape alterations. Stately oaks trees, older than Shelly, were uprooted by the thousands in Volusia County.

We were eight days without electricity or water...but worse yet, we were eleven days without cable service. I spent hours and hours staring at my modem hoping the appropriate cable/data lights would happily start winking at me.

We lost seventeen oak trees, nine of which could have landed on our house...but none did. Two oak trees took aim at our well/water purification/filtration system and landed within millimeters of either side, actually moving the main casing and electrical control box...but the system still works. Several other trees, oaks and Leyland Cypress will have to be removed due to damage to the branches, root system or both.

But life is good....Florida sunshine will be everywhere tomorrow and I now have another new chain saw......another generator on order.
