" floor base wood trim... home/apt contractor"

hi, please tell me when do you put down new base board wood trim?
before carpet installation? or after??

and also since the walls are concrete, plaster covered, is there anyway to cement the base board to the wall instead of nailing it to the cemented wall.....
and if so?? what kind of cement.....

thanks...

priscilla

I'm not sure about the other questions, but carpet installers can work just fine laying down carpet with the base boards in place. They just tuck it in under them. (I used to sell carpet way back when)

When replacing carpet in a house, the installers are not going to go to the bother of removing the base boards. Takes a lot of time, and there's the chance of breaking them.

Use Liquid Nails or Construction Adhesive for the baseboard on concrete plastered walls. Go to Home Depot , Lowe's or your local hardware store.A last resort remedy is to use an Adhesive Caulking.

The explanations given above seem to assume that you already have baseboards in place, so that it's not necessary to remove them to replace the carpet. But if you are starting from scratch, I would think the best option is to wait until the carpet is down before putting on the baseboard, otherwise you will need to shim the baseboards above the floor to allow room for the carpet. Are you installing the carpet yourself?

In new construction we always use 3/8" shims to hold the baseboard up untill it is fastened. The carpet layers will then tuck the carpet under the base. This method makes a nice looking job.

thank you all for the advice.. on my way to home depot

I may do the moulding first with the 3/8 shims as polaray suggests, this way no activity after the install=cleaner carpet, this way i'll be able to paint the installed moulding after the walls are painted and before the carpet is installed.......... pale yellow walls, white stucco ceiling, and white enamel trim mouldings.

thanks again fellas....
