That's a good one, though it's not recent. That's an L-1011; beautiful machines they were. Delta retired its last one over two years ago.

Now the SF340 through the fence? That's embarassing!

Damn!

Years ago, I encountered flight instructors from Embry-Riddle and other schools with some scary tales about middle eastern civilian pilot trainees. Looks like at least one of 'em got hold of that 747.

I guess I should qualify that and point out that the worst were sons of oil-rich fathers with more money than common sense. Not all were incompetent.

Good one Shelly! What's funnier is how the plane ended up in the ditch... this is taken from airdisaster.com:

The aircraft was being taxied from a hangar toward a departure gate prior to boarding when the crew lost directional control of the plane and it entered a monsoon drainage ditch, resulting in serious damage to the forward airframe/nose section. None of the six crewmembers aboard were seriously injured. The aircraft was being moved by a maintenance crew, who taxied using only the no.1 and no.4 engines, apparently not realizing that the aircraft's braking system is powered by hydraulic pumps powered by engines 2 and 3.

Oh dear...

Shelly, that reminds me when National Air Lines planted a 727 in Escambia Bay back in the 70's. Seems all three crewmembers misread the altimeters until just prior to impact. I was flying freight and instructing in light Cessnas at the time and flew near the the accident scene. I recall seeing the number two engine and vertical stabilizer plus part of the forward fuselage above water.

When "salvaged", the aircraft was much more severely damaged than first believed.

Not any more! That's a Russian bird, isn't it? I think it's a Tupolev but it may be an Ilyushin. I'm not up on my Russian planes.

Nothing strange about that, we live right on the flight path of Moscow/Pullman airport, and every night at about 11:20 a plane will fly over our apartment. I would guess it is low enough for me to throw a rock at it if I got the timing right.

Worst thing ever was when the feds landed 3 C130's (which I didn't even think our airport could support) when that terror suspect was being arrested over in Moscow.

Maybe if I can borrow a friends digital camera tonight or tomorrow I will get a pic for you.

Bigger, darker, louder, and it had it's door closed. And there were 3 of them. But other than that, pretty much.

You should be glad that you are the one on the ground watching the flight, not sitting inside it.

The worst flight I had to that Pullman/Moscow airport was a flight from Seattle through Lewiston, ID, and then to the Pullman/Moscow airport.
I don't know if he was showing off his skill or it was a common drill, but the pilot made a final 90 degree adjustment turn 5 seconds before he land the tiny plane. Our plane was rolled to the left almost 70 degree and about 3 stories high above the ground before he touch that down to the runway.

I've been on a few flights around Baffin Island, in northern Canada. At one of the landing strips (Broughton Island), we came over the top of some mountains and immediately dropped the last few hundred feet to the landing strip, which was on the beach. Taking off towards the mountains is even more fun!
We also flew from Pangnirtung, which has the landing strip right in the middle of the town. Planes would fly right over our campsite and have us all diving behind rocks

There are two approach paths to M/P. The one you are talking about is only used for planes coming from the south. The approach is from the west, so they basically have to make a big circle. Flights coming from places like Spokane and Seattle (Horizon Air) get to fly straight in.

Those pictures brought back memories of when the first Jumbo landed at Perth Airport. My father used to work at the airport in the stores section for Ansett and managed to get tickets to check the plane out on its first flight here. We were all standing there watching it taxi towards the terminal when suddenly its motors were turned towards the small gardeners shed next to the control tower. There were two gardeners sitting in there having smoko, I guess, when all of a sudden the shed was blown away around them. It was sure funny at the time and luckily neither gardener was hurt but they had to hang on for dear life.

It's considered to be safer to fly than drive a car.
How many car "accidents" are there a year ?

how many aircraft crashes a year ?

I put the word Accidents in quotes "" because, if you think about it, there is not really such a thing as an accident.
Somwhere down the line, either a person, or a faulty part is to blame.

Best Regards
Ian
