We are a peaceful nation and always have been. We are always ready to defend ourselves and our friends. We will not allow ourselves to be the victim of those who would attack us. Of course there are the spineless among us who prefer to be doormats until they find themselves enslaved.

In indonesia, the US backed military killed between 500,000 to a Million people in 1965 destroying the Indonesian Communist Party and most of its suspected sympathizers in what even the New York Times (March 2, 1966) called "one of the most savage mass slaughters of modern political history." Ten years later the same Indonesian military invaded East Timor, overthrew its reformist government and killed between 100,000 to 200,000 out of a population of about 600,000. The aggression was launched the day after Ford and Kissenger concluded a visit to Indonesia. Philip Leichty, a CIA official there at the time commented in the New York Times (August 12, 1994) that General Soeharto of Indonesia was "explicitly given the green light to do what he did." Leichty noted that most of the weapons, ammunition and food used by the Indonesian military were provided by the US.

The US national security state has participated in covert action or proxy mercenary wars against revolutionary governments in Cuba, Angola, Mozambique, Ehtiopia, Portugal, Nicaragua, Cambodia, East Timor, Western Sahara and elsewhere usually with dreadful devistation and loss of life for the indigenous populations. Hostile actions have also been directed at reformist governments in Egypt, Lebanon, Peru, Iran, Syria, Zaire, Jamaica, South Yemen, the Fiji Islands and elsewhere.

Since World War II, US forces have directly invaded or launched aerial attacks against Vietnam, The Dominican Republic, North Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Libya, Iraq and Somilia, showing varying dergrees of death and destruction.

Before World War II, US military forces waged a bloody and protracted war of conquest in the Philippines from 1899 to 1903. Along with 14 other capitalist nations, the US invaded and occupied parts of socialist Russia from 1918 to 1921. US expositionary forces fought in China along with other Western armies to suppress the Boxer Rebellion and keep the Chinese under the heel of European and North American colonizers.

US marines invaded and occupied Nacaragua in 1912 and again from 1926 to 1933; Haiti from 1915 to 1934; Cuba from 1898 to 1902; Mexico in 1914 and 1916. There were 6 invasions of Honduras between 1911 to 1925 and Panama was occupied between 1903 and 1914.

Its bullshit because you claim it shows that the US has a history of not being peaceful, yet the site has nothing to do with peace or not, it simply describes random military or law enforcement measures or operations.

While I do agree with your assessment of some absurd entries, I still believe there is enough relevant evidence at the site to claim America is in fact not as peaceful as most people believe.

Damn right!

The history of the United States has been one of territorial and economic expansionism, with the benefits going mostly to the US business class in the form of growing investments and markets, access to natural resources and cheap labor. The American people pay the costs of this empire, supporting huge military with their taxes, while suffering the loss of jobs, the neglect of domestic services, and the loss of tens of thousands of American lives in overseas military ventures.

Our leaders would have us believe we intervened in Nicaragua because the Sandinista government was opposed to democracy and we wanted to bring them free elections. Dismissing the fact that the Sandinistas had already conducted fair and open elections in 1984, we might wonder why the US wasn't so concerned for free elections during the fifty years that the Somoza dictatorship installed and supported by the US plundered and brutalized the Nicaraguan nation. Nor today does Washington show any great concern for democracy in any of the US backed dictatorships around the world.

Let's get down to the nitty gritty here and face the facts - it doesn't matter what country or countries we talk about here, the sad fact is the entire human race is a childish, greedy, warlike creature who isn't going to be satisfied until the entire planet is turned into a barren, lifeless wasteland...

... we've obviously learned nothing from the lessons of past mistakes and once again, for the sake of a few so-called leaders not wanting to lose face, thousands, maybe millions of people may have to die.

It's a pity we can't put Saddam Hussein, George Bush, Tony Blair and even our own John Howard in a room together and let them sort it out amongst themselves... (end rant).

Did you know there are only 2 species on this planet that make war on their own kind?

One's ants and (of course) the other's man.

Just our luck it seems...

Thanks Hal, as I've said a while ago I don't usually get involved in these sorts of discussions although I always read these threads with great interest. Of course with the state the world is in at the moment it's very hard not to be involved.

Regarding this looming war in Iraq - I (and a number of friends) are more than a little surprised how and why the attention turned from the hunt for Osama Bin Laden to ousting Saddam Hussein, if Iraq does have illegal weapons then they must have had them for decades, why all the sudden attention now? It seems like since the United States is unable to find and capture Bin Laden they need something else to focus people's attention on to "maintain the rage" following the September 11th 2001 atrocities - George Bush is still looking for revenge.

Now I don't disagree with that at all - nothing can justify what happened at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon but it's tragic that it looks like many more innocent civilians will be killed or made homeless in Iraq because of George Bush's obsession, there has to be a better way.

Not! Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the hemosphsere, the first is Haiti, both because of US intervention.

...Carl,Beware of sweetness from HAL...

*LOL* Hal's OK, I enjoy reading his posts - he certainly gets people thinking that's for sure and that has to be a good thing, no matter which country one lives in there must always be people ready to question authority, too many people are happy to believe everything they see and hear from governments (and the media) these days...

...and one day some of these people wake up to suddenly find they're living in a dictatorship...

That's right Carl. Freedom is usually taken away slowly, year after year and step by step, until it's gone. The Patriot Act's I and II is a good example. Very few know anything about the Patriot Act, let alone that a second version of it has been introduced. The USA Patriot Act does little to increase our safety but a lot to undermine our rights. The Patriot act sacrifices our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms in the name of national security. A true Patriot defends the constitution, they don't sit silently by while our constitutional rights are violated.

Careful Carl,I too enjoy HAL but I know that his sweet talk only extends when you agree with him.I agree with some of his positions on some of our politicians on both sides of the aisle. He knows we are not losing our freedom but likes to use it when it suits his beliefs. When I tried to get him to say one thing he liked about the USA he did not have anything BUT when it came to looking for a way to slam the patriot act he suddenly liked parts of our constitution. When I asked him about it he claims that he told me but I "forgot". BS!
He is clever, but as those people that we brought havoc to(according to HAL) are quoted,"He speaks with forked tounge"}>
If he can rant as he does about the USA freedom is alive and well even on PCQandA

Your problem is that you make assumptions instead of spending time reading what people have to say. Maybe your ability to concentrate is limited to short little spurts. It's much easier to click off scores of those silly faces and just fill in the blanks with three sentence cliches.

Hi Newbee, I see your point and I have to say I don't agree with everything Hal says - hell, I don't even understand a lot of it but I think a lot of the problems with disagreements, etc. are caused by the nature of the forum itself.

With some exceptions, no-one really knows anyone else and it's hard to visualize what someone is thinking when they post a message here. With a face to face conversation at least you can see the other person's facial expressions and hear the tone of their voice so you can usually pick up whether something is being said as a joke or a wind up etc.

I think a lot of the time people get the wrong idea about the meaning of some of the replies here and on other forums and that's where a lot of problems begin - and why everyone needs to have a fairly thick skin to survive on Internet forums.

By the way - I wouldn't miss any of this for the world, I don't know anywhere else where I can get such great entertainment and information (or misinformation depending on who you believe) for the price of a dial-up call each day.

I just love the Al and Hal show...

Well it's certainly better than watching T.V. I've learned a great many things from the people in this forum, even Newbee. The more time one spends here, the more surprises there are.

The Forum: A new version of reality T.V.! Shelley, of course, would be the Host-Mod. I think it would fly...Now all we need is a sponsor.

We, America, are more than a peaceful nation. While Shelly stated it well permit me to add:

The world has never seen a country such as America in the past.
America is a country that has fed and clothed a good part of the World. We are a country that has rebuilt its' enemies following a World War and turned them into successful democracies with solid economic bases. We have continued this tradition by creating policies to aid our former "communist" enemies. We are a country who has "cared to care". Never has this happened in the past in regard to any other nation.

We are a nation that has opened its' doors to the "down trodden", the oppressed and the endangered from all corners of the World. We are a nation that is represented by the most pluralistic society that has ever existed within one set of borders. We are a nation that has succeeded in spite of our religious, racial and ethnic differences; for we have recognized that it is these very differences that has led to our greatness and our success.

America is a country that is not perfect. We are a country that has had and continues to have racial and ethnic problems. We are a country that seeks to recognize its' shortcomings and work toward solving them. Do we solve our problems fast enough? Probably not if you are the one faced with the "problem". But unlike our counterparts throughout the world we work toward finding solutions to our problems. We always try to ". . .form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, promote the general welfare and . . . " One of our goals, as a nation, is to live up to our Constitutional promises.

Above all, we are a peaceful nation not unlike bed of Roses. So long as you do not try to push through the shrub - the thorns will leave you be. They are purely defensive in nature.
