The Andy Griffith show was always one of my favorites and I will still watch reruns. Having grown up in a small Arkansas town I could always relate to life in Mayberry, from Opie's barefoot summer days, the friendly atmosphere, stores and shops and the easy, unhurried life.
Didn't have encounters with local law enforcement but I do remember the police chief sported a rotund beer belly, aviator sunglasses and usually had a coke bottle with him that reportedly was about half coke and half whiskey. Barney Fife? Possibly. One night I and three buddies were chasing some girls who were in their car. I spotted them on another street and quickly turned down an alley to cut over. Didn't notice the cop car behind me and suddenly the gumball machine lit up and the siren came on. I stopped quickly and he apparently yanked on his emergency brake and skidded to a stop behind me. He was out of the car before it stopped and the next thing I know I was staring down the barrel of a .38. Turns out two awol soldiers had escaped from the jail and he thought they might have been in the back seat of my car when I turned quickly into the alley.
I actually worked for the town drunk. He owned a mens clothing store had a beautiful wife and two equally beautiful little girls. Wife shot him one day but didn't hit anything vital. Was working at the store one day when we heard a car crash just outside in the street. Rushed out and there was the owner confronting another driver. The owner rear ended him because he thought the guy was driving too fast. I was a senior in high school at the time.
In the eighth grade I got a job as a soda jerk at the drug store. Right across the street was a small park with some benches. The ground around the benches was covered with wood shavings from old guys sitting there whittling on pieces of wood. Also sold a lot of Dr Tichner's antiseptic which I think was about 90% alcohol.
Yep. It was pretty much a mirror image of Mayberry.

So sad to get this news as Andy Griffith and Mayberry was one of my all time favorite actors and shows.
