"Bald Eagle nest transmitted live"

Hornby Island, Bald Eagle Nest -- Vancouver BC
Someone stuck a camera in a tree, hooked it up to an encoder, and pointed it at a wild Bald Eagle nest. Strangely captivating.... Probably the closest any of us will ever get to one of these birds

Hey folks, don't forget this. I have been watching this on and off all day today. Caught both of them in the nest, changing positions for sitting on the eggs. This is the coolest... I have really enjoyed this site.

HATCHING is due: April 26 and 30. ((provided that lightening does not stike her or the crows and ravens don't steel them! -- we will keep our fingers crossed. I heard a crow calling on my monitor yesterday and I instantly yelled "go away" -- how easy to get absorbed!

INCREDIBLE: for each of the past 4 days nearly 40,000 people are watching our eagles -- the capacity of our server. BY tonight 3 more servers will come on line to serve more viewers. This has mushroomed in 4 days from telling 98 people.

Wow Jane, that's too bad.

The site has worked all day with no troubles for me. I spent way too much time watching Eagles.

I hope they get it straightened out for those that can't view it as it sure is neat.

WOW !! Just watched them change places and turn the eggs. Don't know if it is the male or female that is on the nest now. They said a few words to each other (in eagle language), and the one that had been on the nest took off to get breakfast (I guess) and the other one settled in on the eggs.

Hi Les, *waves*

I just saw them both in the nest doing the same thing. It is 10:30 here and it was quite a sight to see.

By the way, I still don't know which is which either but this is what I found on an Eagle site:

Quote:
The sex of a bald eagle can be determined by its beak. Females have deeper ones.

I have to study them a little closer.

Pretty awesome isn't it, to see this!

There is huge difference in the picture quality on my system between Firefox or IE.

The video is much better with Firefox. Colors are seriously faded with IE and Image is also much sharper in Firefox.

Is this the same for others?

Can't capture the stearming video from Firefox in a screen shot for a show and tell.

The difference is so great I wonder if something is wrong with my IE.

Checked the stream with Windows Meadia player as a stand alone and its the same as IE.

How about it can anyone else report a comparision?

I can't tell any difference. I was flipping back and forth from IE to Firefox and could see no difference in picture quality or color.

I also get an extremely crisper image on Firefox. I just tried on my dual monitors and both have the same chages and Firefox is clearer. The brown feathers are sharper and clearly darker than the IE images.

Actually, It should not make any difference. A browser is a browser, the signal feed is nothing but ones and zeros. The image is determined only by the video card, and monitor.

That's how any digital imaging works. I now have a digital TV on digital cable, when the same thing is on multiple channels I notice I can flip among channels and the images are absolutely identical. Try that on an analog tv, and every channel will have different image quality, color saturation, sharpness, etc.

It sure does make a difference here. If I only had IE I would rate the video very good no "pixelation" or breakup of any sort, but the picture is way sharper in firefox.

from Shelly post #23:

>Actually, It should not make any difference. A browser is a
>browser, the signal feed is nothing but ones and zeros. The
>image is determined only by the video card, and monitor.

Figured it out.
I knew I was seeing a better video image in firefox than ie, and the reason is so simple I can't believe I missed it.

Firefox - default display - 100% - options: 25%-100%-200%-fs.
IE - default display - 200% - options: full screen only.

So I was comparing the defaults, ie 200% to firefox 100%.

Change Firefox to 200% and the video quality is the same.

The browsers handle the same code in a slightly different way. IE seems to ignore parameters and values in the object code.

I realize that Shelly and it struck me as odd on how it can be doing that. I could see it if I had only used Firefox on one and IE on the other, but using both on either monitor shows the difference. I can think of no reason for it either.

Edit: I just had my son bring it up in side by side smaller windows on his 21" monitor and there is a difference. His IE is not quite as washed out as mine, but his Firefox is also sharper.

Have made comparision IE vs Firefox several dozen times since last night. Usally Firefox much better image BUT three times there was no noticable difference. IE was as good as the Firefox normal.

Could this have something to do with the quality of the connection?

B.C. Internet eagle births expected on weekend

Victoria ďż˝ The births of two bald eagles whose doting parents have been the focus of millions of fascinated Internet surfers is days or perhaps hours away, say those who have been watching the nest and its two eggs for weeks for tell-tale hatching signs.

Up to 100 million people have used the Internet to view two nesting eagles on B.C.'s Hornby Island take turns doing egg duty, which includes sitting patiently for hours and keeping the nest tidy and safe.

Doug Carrick, 73, a retired accountant, set up a hidden webcam just above the eagle nest in a tree in his backyard and his experiment is thrilling a worldwide audience, which is growing by the millions as the expectation of the birth mounts.

"People have a deep interest," he said Thursday. "It's astounding. I've got the camera up so close to them. It's right on them. You can feel their personalities."

The two eagles, with their hooked yellow beaks, sharp eyes and no-nonsense expressions, go about their egg sitting shifts with an almost military-like precision. While one sits, the other hunts.

The images, broadcast on the Internet , are so clear, viewers can see the wind ruffle the feathers of the adult eagles.

"Everyone in the world should see this," said Mr. Carrick, whose camera picks up the sound of the nearby ocean waves, seagulls and barking dogs.

He said he thought he saw a crack in one of the eggs, which would signal one of the chicks is ready to peck its way to life, but now believes its was a speck of dirt.

Mr. Carrick, who says eagles have been using his backyard nest for 17 years, is convinced the births will now happen late Friday at the earliest.

"It looks like it will be at least another day or two," he said.

Mr. Carrick said he's not certain, but he believes the two eagles in his backyard nest are the same pair that have been returning every October for all those 17 years.

But Arthur Griffiths, spokesman for the Vancouver company helping broadcast the Internet images of the eagle nest to millions of people, said he believed the eggs were about to hatch at any moment.

"It's imminent I would say," said Mr. Griffiths, a former owner of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League.

He said the births, whenever they happen, have been attracting interest worldwide.

"We actually had 22 million hits over a two-day period this week. So we're well over 100 million now," said Griffiths, whose Vancouver-based company Infotec Business Systems, has proven it has technology where people can watch the Internet with television-screen quality.

Webcam catches baby eagle hatch

Victoria ďż˝ The light of the world started shining on a tiny eagle chick Friday afternoon whose birth had been eagerly anticipated by millions of Internet surfers.

The tree-top bald eagle's nest on B.C.'s Hornby Island that has been the focus of a cleverly disguised webcam became home to a baby eagle.

The newborn eagle started pecking its way out of its protective eggshell at about 1:35 p.m. Pacific time. A second egg had yet to hatch, but was expected to crack within hours.

Doug Carrick and his wife ďż˝ and whoever else was watching over the Internet ďż˝ saw the tiny head of the chick as it tapped its way into the world.

You can see part of its head, said Mr. Carrick's wife, Sheila. It's still in there (the egg), but you can see the fluffy head sticking out.

She said she saw the eaglet as its mother and father were changing positions in their nest.

She just sat down on the egg again, so we can't see anything now.

It took 38 days for the first egg to hatch, she said.

It's been estimated that more than 100 million people have viewed the two bald eagles tending their nest.

Retired accountant Doug Carrick, 73, set up a hidden webcam just above the eagle nest in a tree in his backyard last summer after the eagle pair left for their fall salmon hunt.

By this spring, his experiment was sending images worldwide.

Mr. Carrick said he's not certain, but believes the two eagles in his backyard nest are the same pair that have been returning every October for 17 years.

A Vancouver company with expertise in streaming video hosted the webcast for Mr. Carrick and Microsoft provided extra bandwidth to accommodate the millions of viewers who have been watching the parents and anticipating the births.

The eagles and their newest addition to the family can be viewed on their website.

The images broadcast on the Internet are so clear viewers can see the wind ruffle the feathers of the adult eagles.

Hornby Island, accessible only by two ferries or by float plane, is located about 220 kilometres east of Victoria.

Wow I just saw the parents switch early today Pacific time. Chick is looking great.

Meanwhile both parents were off the nest in Mass and those 2 chicks seem to be growing like wildfire.

Heady stuff.

False alarm on B.C. eagle webcast
Apr. 29, 2006. 01:24 PM
DIRK MEISSNER
CANADIAN PRESS

VICTORIA - The light of the world started shining on a tiny eagle chick Friday afternoon whose birth had been eagerly anticipated by millions of Internet surfers.

The tree-top bald eagle's nest on B.C.'s Hornby Island that has been the focus of a cleverly disguised webcam is due to become home to two baby eagles.

Yesterday, onlookers believed the first chick had begun to peck its way out of the shell. But today Doug Carrick, the man broadcasting the webcast, said that was a false alarm.

Carrick now believes that what everyone thought was a crack was instead a piece of fluff.

He says the chicks are now overdue and he is beginning to get worried.

It's been estimated that more than 100 million people have viewed the two bald eagles tending their nest.

Retired accountant Carrick, 73, set up a hidden webcam just above the eagle nest in a tree in his backyard last summer after the eagle pair left for their fall salmon hunt.

A Vancouver company with expertise in streaming video hosted the webcast for Carrick and Microsoft provided extra bandwidth to accommodate the millions of viewers who have been watching the parents and anticipating the births.

The eagles and their newest addition to the family can be viewed at infotecbusinesssystems.com/wildlife.

The images broadcast on the Internet are so clear viewers can see the wind ruffle the feathers of the adult eagles.

Hornby Island, accessible only by two ferries or by float plane, is located off the eastern shore of central Vancouver Island.

I cant get a screen shot...
I hit print screen and past into PSP, and I get a live image and if I move the window around the live image stays in one place.
Tried Cam studio for a movie and same problem.
Anyone know what I need to do?
One other question, where is it located? It's 6:45 am here in central time and it is light at the eagle nest. My Mt St Helen cam shows it dark on the west coast???

There is a program called FRAPS http://www.fraps.com/ that will allow you to do screen shots of web cams, games, etc. I haven't used it so I cannot vouch for how well it works. Check the forums at the eagle cam site and look for threads on screen shots.

The nest is located, I believe, on Hornby Island womewhere close to Vancouver, BC.

Shelly or one of the other astronomy buffs can probably explain it. I imagine it has something to do with the curvature of the earth. I'm located in Moses Lake, WA and I'm about 300 miles or so east of Vancouver. It was just barely light here but much lighter at the eagle nest site. I know the nest is probably a long way up in the air which might put it far enough above the horizon to catch some sunlight before it reaches ground level but that's just a guess on my part.

The live cam has been down for awhile today. Here is the recent post from richardpitt explaining the problem:

I've been in touch with Telus and they tell me there is a problem with "a server" which is causing major packet loss on one of the two lines we have into Doug's home - the one the video encoder is on.

I'm in the process of trying to get the encoder to talk out its other port to the second line - something we have the line for, but have not yet had to do.

Telus does not have an estimate of the time to fix the problem

The second line does not seem to be affected.

We're still capturing video live locally, and Doug is watching for any signs of the eggs hatching. If he sees any I'll pull pictures out and show them no matter what.

We're trying

At least we have an explanation. Let's hope they can fix the problem in time for the hatchings

As of the close of the day (Eagle time ) the cams were still out for me too Jane. The replays are playing now and they can be seen. Let's hope they can resolve the problem overnight and we can take another peek tomorrow with the live cam.

I have found the forums terribly slow for days now. I too get frustrated and leave after awhile. I read that it took one poster 15 minutes to access the forum to post. Many of them are timing out trying to post their comments.

Here's to good news tomorrow

Hornby Island Eagles not successful in 2006

Sad News:

April 30, 2006

Eagles and conservation have been the joy and occasional sadness of my life. This is a sad moment. It appears that the Hornby Island bald eagle eggs are infertile. The first egg should have hatched April the 26 and the second egg today. The first embryo, if it developed at all, is surely dead. The second embryo, could still hatch but I cannot see the proper pipping of the egg shell, where the chicks beak has broken through enabling it to draw in air, the precursor to the final struggle for hatching. It does not look good for this pair this year. In fact this is the second year of failure for this nest territory.

Reasons for the Failure to Hatch:

We cannot be sure. Some educated guesses follow.

The adult eagles are possibly old:

1. This is the 19th year for known nesting results from this tree. It could have been occupied for 50 or more years earlier. Was the same pair occupying the nest all that time? We do not know. Eagles could live that long.

2. If the birds are very old it is possible that they have simply run out of reproductive ability. Perhaps they simply can’t produce viable eggs any longer.

3. Alternatively, it is possible with very old birds that they have accumulated so many pesticides and heavy metals that their reproductive track is no longer able to function properly. This is not at all out of the question. I am told that orcas (killer whales) that now periodically die along the British Columbia and Washington coasts are so polluted and their bodies so loaded with poisons that it is illegal to tow their bodies out to sea or have them hauled to land fills. They carcasses have to be burned. A very sad statement on our polluted earth. Are these eagles, who also occupy the top of the food chain and eat the same basic foods as orcas, also contaminated. Very possibly. Maybe the reproductive success is going to be restricted to younger eagles that have not had so long to accumulated the poisons.

One or more of the adult eagles is young and inexperienced:

1. This is possible – but not liklely. Last year when the territory only hatched one young which died at 6 days of age and the other egg did not hatch, both adults were in full adult plumage – not even just newly matured at 5 years as this would have been indicated by the dark streaking in their white head or dark tail band. These birds appear to be fully mature both last year and this year. Furthermore, this pair appear to e very experienced in nest building that we got to witness in such marvelous detail, and in fullfulling the incubating duties. They hardly left the eggs unattended more than 12 to 40 seconds during any exchange that I witnessed. They are not just good, and I assume experienced parents, but so compatible with each other. I take this beautiful pair to be very experienced parents. So the loss again this year of their eggs I also view as most likely due to loss of fertility due to age or polution.

Other alternatives:

There are infinite options but none seem logical than my first option above. The pair are very used to human disturbance, constantly perching near houses and human activity with no noticeable alarm or concern. While I have received lots of concerned calls and emails at the sounds of power movers, cars, chain saws and dogs we have had an unprecedented opportunity to watch the eagles in the cam and correlate their behavior with disturbances. The noise of civilizations does not seem to phase them a bit.

I found one call from an irate and annoyed caller quite interesting. She heard the disturbance of barking dogs and instantly called me. I was actually calling Doug to question him about this. After many rings he answered the phone and reported that he delayed coming in to the phone until the herd of barking sea lions has passed by his porch. I hardly think barking sea lions would be a disturbance to bald eagles – and indeed barking dogs elicit no interest from the nesting birds either.

Survival:

Eagles like most creatures in the wild are constantly subjected to the test of survival. Can they find food and make a living? Can they avoid being killed and eaten. Can they avoid hurting and damaging themselves? If they can’t keep their feathers in good condition they won’t be able to fly efficiently and hunt effectively and they will die.

Almost half of the eagles that start nesting loose their eggs or young. Surviving in the wild is not easy. Of those young that survive to fledging only a small percentage are likely to survive the five years to maturity. Once they have proven themselves as good hunters and they enter the breeding population they can produce young for 15 to 25 or more years. Now pause for a moment to contemplate how many eagle there would or could be it the adults were successful lin raising one or two young every year for 20 years! That could be that each pair produced 30 or 40 young – far more than necessary to keep the population stable. And stable would mean producing a new eagle for every one that died.

Therefore, with such a long live potential, their has to be a lot of nest failures or early deaths otherwise the world would be full of eagles – and no room for any other species. Not a balanced system.

So as much as I was very saddened to not see our beautiful pair of adult bald eagles produce eagles this year it is not an unexpected happening that they should fail. If, as I suspect, these are old eagles, they have already produced many replacements for themselves and they have been great contributors to the very successful and expanding eagle population that we have been experiencing the past 50 years. It is not a good thought that they have stopped reproducing because they have become sterile from pollution and this is also not confirmed.

We will hope and expect that other eagles will be more successful and they their young will be flying over our waters. If our adult pair is at the end of its reproductive life we can anticipate younger birds moving into the territory shortly and becoming the parents of the next generations.

David Hancock
