UD/PC911 News-

UD/PC911 Avatars and Badges are posted here.

The new and improved UD/PC911 Avatars and badges are here
-------------------------------------------
Team UD/PC911 has set another daily record of 73,664.

Fantastic job. Way to go team.

------------------------------------------
Team UD/PC911 beat Team UBBDev by 9,000 points today.
-------------------------------------------

Keep on crunching, my friends. Onward and upward.

-------------------------------------------

The Second Great Team UD/PC911 Giveaway is in the works. Let me know via email or private message if you have something that you can donate to the cause.

We are not trying give away the moon here. Just something computer-related that you do not need that someone else might like to have.

You do not have to be a member of UD/PC911 to donate, but you do have to be a member to win a prize.

What is being considered right now is to run two contests, one for all contributing members, and one just for new members.

The idea behind these giveaways is to continue in the PC/911 tradition of members being generous to other members by giving computer stuff away instead of throwing it away.

We need at least two prizes and it would be nice to have more, some to giveaway now and some to giveaway later.

C'mon PC/911 members, look around your computer shack, basement, attic, garage, or shed and get rid of some stuff you know you will never use again.

TIA.
-----------------------------------------
PRIZES-

As I mentioned yesterday, we do have more prizes. Here are more details about the prizes that have been donated:

1 Mushkin Rev3 256MB PC133

1 Corsair 128MB PC133

Wow! I want to say Hi and welcome to the new members. There is a whole bunch of you. I've been away since Thursday, and this team has exploded. I'm glad you've decided to join us. A big welcome to Sonny.

The team has been setting new records almost daily. It's getting kind of exciting. We have even staved off Team UBBDev's overtaking us.

However, we still need yet more help. Talk to your friends, coworkers and family. We need to enlist as many devices into this cause as possible!

Anyway, I just wanted to throw in my WOOHOO!!!

Coincidence? I don't know, but we gained 7 new members in the two days after I first started posting there.

thanks dubber ive been looking forward to putting this badge on it took a while...i posted on the ud forum a while back.My cousin joined us the other day...i dont know how many she will get yet...also talked to a few people at work...one coming for sure and whoever he can bring with him....patience is something that goes hand in hand with ud...i dont care if they join under me. as long as they crunch its fine with me...preferably for pc911...my points may come slow but my old and slow computers are on 24/7...so i dont feel bad about what i do as far as ud..

ps:Get Spezi ! ! !..

One of my sons is getting a new computer and it hasn't arrived yet but it will be Intel based and at least a PIII but maybe even a P4 from what he told me. He's getting it as a gift and doesn't have all the particulars for me.

I will hook it up for him and network it when it arrives so installing UD will be my fee for maintenance/service work.

Edit: PS I must stay ahead of Vitalt's hypnosis guided forces.

Well Dubber does most of the work but he looked like he needed some help generating interest. Never the less acknowledgement is very nice once in a while so thank you.

It sure is gratifying to see how much the team has progressed. I actually see us attaining 100,000 points a day as long as we keep up the pace and enthusiasm.

Not only should we be able to make it to page one but I think we can climb up in the ranks there a bit to boot.

If even only one life is altered through our efforts it would be awesome but the potential is there to help many and that possibility is extremely attractive.

We have ourselves a great team here with a lot of devoted members whose eagerness to help shall see us do unimaginable things yet.

Keep up the great work all.

I didn't like the post, but now the thread doesn't make a lot of sense at first.

I was planning to suffer for 300 posts. After that they archive them and start the thread over.

Hey Dubber!
Just read the UD Forum thread for the first time and it's good! It would seem that your recruiting efforts are paying off quite well.

Good to see IA pay a visit and generate a bit of interest, as usual

At the rate everyone is going we will likely meet the goals that you have set for us.

Good job Dubber.

Hi JellyBean,

All the elements have a bit of an effect on points from CPU time to memory to hard disk space allotment and processor size. The individual work units that we get do vary all the time though so it is hard to predict exactly what one will get. You can usually guess fairly close based on past performance but there are still a lot of peaks and valleys in the overall picture.

I usually rack up around 6-700 points a day however there have been some days where I've recieved almost 2000 points and I made no changes at all to my system or settings.

Results also will vary as I average about 6 a day and yet I've had days where I've gotten as many as 18.

Hope this info helps and thanks for your contribution.

there are a lot of variables...how many computers you javer running under your name...what the computers ar(processor ram etc...)how long you leave them on...and the luck of the draw as far as the molecule you happen to upload to work on all come into play. my last one lasted a few days.i have had some last over 120 hours the one im working on now has been running for 26 hours and is at63%.we do spend some effort on tweaking but youll need to familiarize yourself with your device before you know what to do to it to improve.click on your little blue egg on the taskbar and look around.

There have been days where one computer has turned in 6 results but not often. I average 6 a day using three computers. That depends a lot on how fast of a computer you have and my main one is a Pentium 4 with a 1400mhz processor.

Once you join UD you can add more PC's under your user name as long as you give the actual computer (UD refers to them as "devices") its own unique "device" name. You can therefore be on the PC911 UD Team as JellyBean but meanwhile under the JellyBean user name you could be running 100 different computers if you wanted.

Our biggest contributor is Cor_Ofc_Fla but there are many individual contributors operating under that name which in turn is a part of the bigger picture known as PC911 UD Team. Hope this all makes sense.

I am listed on the PC911 UD Team as "Spezi" but I run three devices under that user name and will be adding another soon.

Heh heh,

At first I didn't understand what you were talking about when you mentioned "projects".

They are normally called "work units" or "jobs" and when finished and counted as stats they are called "Results".

Work units will vary a lot in the length of time it takes for your computer to process them.

Lately they have been pretty uniform within each work unit, which means that the amount of time it takes to do a certain percentage is about the same through the whole "work unit".

For example, if it takes 2 hours to do 33%, it will take about 6 hours to do the whole work unit. Of course there will be exceptions, so don't hold me to that if your work unit doesn't work(pun unintended) that way.

Edit;

Normally the points earned are roughly proportional to the length of time it takes to do the job.

For example, if a 10 hour job earns 150 points then a 30 hour job will earn about 450 points.

Of course there are several things you can do to tweak your computer to earn as many points as possible.

Take a look here for some tips and useful info.

Spezi has several machines running I believe. It's all about processor speed though - below are my stats on one XP-2000 machine (I don't know what the 2 installations mean - unless it's counting a reinstall I did.) For points see Chickenman's tips (and the others as well) at http://strato.net/~kenkay/Corr_Ofc_Fla/Tips%20&%20FAQ.htm - they make a difference. Although there are some that claim to understand how UD tallies points, I don't believe them

You may be comparing apples and oranges.

I have two computers here. One is a PII 350 and the other is an XP1700 overclocked to about an 1850.

The XP1700 will do 5 jobs while the 350 is doing one.

I use the 350 quite a bit and the more you use a computer the slower UD will run because it will only use the processing power that is not being used by something else on your computer. it is designed that way so it will not interfere with your regular computing.

If I leave my 350 alone it does work units faster because my browser, firewall, and antivirus are not competing for and winning against UD for processing power.

And sometimes you just get a run of hard work units that take a long time to process. That's just the luck of the draw as different difficulty work units are distributed randomly by UD.

tx, now that actually makes sense to me. I am running an amd k-2/450, and tonight I will shut off everything else except explorer and sys tray before I go to bed... and will take it off line too. Maybe that will help with the competing issue. Either way, I will keep crunching on. What prompt responses here.. niceee.

Unless you're using the speaker icon (and one other obscure item I can't remember) you don't need systray at all, so even if you need it, you can shut it down if you're trying to conserve as much as possible. If you're on Win 9x, a process viewer is very handy to have, I like TaskInfo but there's several. Main thing is to get an easy to decipher readout of CPU and memory usage.

Jellybean,

When a UD work unit is completed, UD will try to connect to the internet to turn in it's results and download another work unit.

If you are not connected to the Internet, UD will wait patiently for you to reconnect to the Internet.

So, if a work unit is completed an hour after you go to bed, UD will have nothing for your computer to process until you reconnect to the Internet, when it will then turn in the results and download another work unit.

Depending on how long you sleep you may not be doing any processing for several hours, thus negating whatever you gained by having the internet turned off.

A few things you can do:

1. Make reasonably sure the work unit will still be crunching until you wake up. You can estimate how long it will take by what I mentioned in a previous post in this thread.

2. Download and use a program called UD Dialup which will dial up your Internet connection for you when UD completes a work unit and then close the connection after the result is turned in and another work unit is downloaded. Just be sure you don't have UD Dialup running when you are connected to the internet.

3. Leave the Internet connected.

Edit: To strike through a statement.

If you're on a dialup, you can set it to "always dial my default connections" and UD will connect for you. I guess it works for dial when a connections is not present as well. Works on mine anyway. Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections.

Only problem with that, is that everything else imaginable will also happily connect for you, including spam mail you happen to inadvertantly open, stealth popups hiding behind an unclosed window, scripts running in a minimized browser window, undetected trojans, and gawd knows what else.

Bob - I'm not particularly familar with broadband (except for a T1 at work), but I know with cable there's no dialup involved - I assume there isn't with DSL either - that you're just 'on'. In anycase you were referring to dialup so I assumed you meant standard 56K dialup. I've experimented with the "always dial my default connection" option and found it dialing out all the time, whether I wanted it to or not (usually not). If you only have one phone line and it's doin that, that's not good. This was back when I had Win95 and no firewall, and before I knew all the dangers of not having one, but beyond that, I was finding that while it was quick to dial out for anything that wanted out, once online it tended to stay online - tying up the line. That's my main concern. A firewall will keep stuff from accessing the connection, but I don't think it will keep stuff from requesting and being granted the establishment of a connection by the OS. That's a whole different animal. But using the autodisconnect option with it like Ken does would atleast keep it from staying online indefinitely, but then you'd have to make sure you maintain some level of activity when you want to stay online, and you could still have it dialing out unexpectedly. Personally I prefer UD Dialup - it just works, & with no concerns over any unauthorized dialouts.

Zema Bus,

I left UDDialup on once while connected to the Internet and when a job completed, it completely locked up my computer and I wound up losing that UD work unit.

I don't know. Something else may have caused it, but I don't want to try it again to see.

I am happy to hear that it doesn't do that to you.

I'll go back and edit that statement out of the previous post.

On my two PC network I have the 'server' set to dial out on demand (connect automatically)...that way the UD agent on each computer can connect to UD's main server whenever it is time to return a work unit. It is also setup to auto-disconnect after a short 'idle' time so that it is only connected if needed.

There's just one problem with this approach... As stated by Zema Bus, there is all kinds of stuff wanting in or out, so you need a really good firewall, set on the highest level that you can live with.

Many of the COF PC's are setup this way with very few, if any, problems so far.

Another thing you can use is UD Monitor. You can cache 5 work units at a time so that if you're not connected to the internet it will switch to the next WU. That way you won't lose any crunching time if you're not around when each result is completed.

I also have DUN and use the ud dialup.I leave it on all the time.
If I am using ZA,how can anything get in or out without my permission?
Only problem I have is when 2 computers try to call at the same time.
Hopefully sometime in the future, our small part of the woods can advance to cable.

Yes, same setup as Troy614. DUN set to dial automatically, inactive connection closes after 5 min. Works great on dialup. Using ZA all apps that want to connect are by default stopped until you approve them. Just allow UD to connect but no server. Thus it should be no worry to leave it crunching 24/7.
