"Zone Alarm Pro"

For no apparent reason, all of a sudden ZA Pro, version 1.0.64 is crashing, some kind of page fault thing (sorry, didn't do a screen capture, but will do if it will help). Doesn't seem to matter what program(s) I'm running, how many open windows, whatever. Help?

You may want to check ZoneLabs support pages at http://www.zonelabs.com/services/support_za_zap.htm.

Well, thefirst thing you need to do is upgrade from that version. There have been many since version 1.

You have an antique version of the program. Time to remove all traces of it and update. Please print this out and read it, then re-read it, before you do an uninstall: http://www.zonelabs.com/services/support_install.htm

If you have settings that are difficult to duplicate, I use screeen shots and print them out for reference. (Or paste them to a Word file.)

do not use ver 3.0, had it, bad news, it added a network to
trusted sites, CANNOT be edited out!! i had a copy of 2.6
so i removed v3 and am very happy using it. v2.6 is available from
Broderbund if you can find a copy on CD

about 90% of the attempts to break in were coming from that
network. v3.0 let them in. would set the program to 'block'
and in 1 minute or less, it was back to 'trusted'.

i made the mistake of going to lunch and when i came back
puter was an absolute disaster area, format/reinstall
was only solution, beware!!!!!!.

Thanks all. As usual, your responses hit the nail on the head. Obviously, it's been a while since I did an upgrade. Still, the recent behavior is odd, and somehow seems tied to Incredimail (which I have since uninstalled). Too bad...I really like Incredimail, but for unknown reasons, can't get the program to work correctly. Still waiting to hear back from their tech support.

Again, thanks for your help.

I too have been running vers 3 without problems. You can remove a network from the trusted zone, but, why would you? that's one of the benefits of having the network. Now, if your Internet connection is in the trusted zone, well that's another story.

I will say this, a zone cannot get added to without ones consent. You would have to edit the zone, and then place it into the internet zone, if this is, in fact, your concern.

Broadband cable will usually show up in ZA as a lan (which it actually is)... you have the choice of placing a checkmark to include it in your 'local zone' or not.

Take care... Randell

Hmmm... I would say you had a problem with a conflict or corrupted program, that is not a characteristic of Zone Alarm at all. Many, many folks have a lan shown with no problem keeping it out of the 'local zone'. An individual 'bad' experience does not taint a good program for everyone else.

Take care... Randell

ZAP automatically places your ISP (your "Network") in the trusted zone as soon as it detects it, so that you can connect freely to the internet. I believe ZA has always done this, but it's more obvious in version3. Mine is listed by name and IP address, yours may be just by IP address. It is also normal for ISP's to frequently ping their subscribers, which is what you were seeing. I'm on cable with AT&T previously I was on MediaOne cable which AT&T purchased. When AT&T switched me over to their new network backbone, that address was added to Trusted. I could now delete the old IP from trusted, but never bothered, since that network is now dead.

Shelly, well... now I have a question (haven't gone to ZAPro 3 yet). I am assuming you still have the choice in ver 3 as to whether to add a cable lan to your 'local zone'. Since many other users share your connection, a lan so to speak, it doesn't make sense to include it in your 'local zone'. I definitely have no interest in including all the other users in my area on Cox Internet in my local(or trusted) zone. Up to now it's been a simple choice made by check mark by 'new network' at the top, hope that hasn't changed? As you know, adding the ISP address, or addresses for DHCP and ping purposes to your 'local zone' is not the same thing as adding the lan shown in the 'new network' box shown at the top of the 'local zone choices', I have addresses listed in LZ for DNS, DHCP, and default gateway.

Take care... Randell

Shelly...

When I first powered up after the reformat and installing ZAP, I was given the option, of which zone to put my internet connection into. I put my LOCAL into the trusted, but kept my internet in the Internet zone.

Does being behind a router have any bearing on this?

At least as far as ZAPro 2.6xx and Cox Internet cable is concerned, if you put a check mark by 'new network'(if the reference is to the Cox Internet connection) under 'Networks', in Local Zone Contents, it will open your computer to all the other Cox Internet users on your base area connection. As for DHCP and ping from Cox Internet, you can either run 'internet' security settings on medium, or add those specific addresses to your Local Zone Contents under 'other computers' and run your 'internet' security setting on high for 'stealth mode'. In my case, I enter the specific addresses to my Local Zone Contents for DHCP and ping purposes, so I can run 'internet' security on high.... and I don't check the CI network under 'Networks' at the top as I have no wish to open my computer to the other Cox Internet users in my area. Don't know about ver. 3 yet, I haven't gotten around to installing it.

EDIT: I am speaking for Cox Internet in the area where I live. I don't have specific, first-hand knowledge as to the workings of Cox Internet, or any other cable provider, in other parts of the country.

Take care... Randell
