"Im an ICQ newbie please explain"

Could someone please explain to me briefly the workings of ICQ and what they consider to be its main advantages and drawbacks? I would like to be available to chat online in the evenings but will only download the software if it does not bombard me with ads etc.
Thanks for any input.

Your friend and healer.

Eddie.

ICQ comes with a lot of baggage. It's big. It's overrun with porn peddlers. It does invade you with ads.

If a person must have a messenger program then I think MSN is a better way to go as it is integrated with IE6 anyway and is capable of doing pretty much the same functions anyway with a lot less size.

i agree with spezi, messenger in my opinion is better. Saying that though, the number of times i have seen people post in this forum since the launch of XP about getting rid of messenger that came with XP, i think there are many people that may disagree..

right, MSN is very good for instant chat, it also alows instant direct file tansfer (though only files under 1mb) and it also notifies of any new emails as soon as they hit you inbox (when your online and signed in obviously)!
The huge drawback is that you can only use it with msn or hotmail accounts and msn passport accounts, and you can only instant chat and file transfer with others on msn or hotmail accounts (and running msn messenger...)!
If you use hotmail, and most of your friends or assosciates, i would definately recomend messenger.
Its available to download for free at www.msn.com

FWIW I do in fact have both on my system but I do not leave either of them running unless I am actually engaged in conversation with someone. They both work but I just think MSN is a better choice for someone with limited resources but the big problem always seems to be what your contacts are using which is why I have both otherwise I would turf ICQ.

To be honest Vitalt I don't use the darn thing enough to tell what they changed in the latest version. I also don't use most of the features it has. Just chat with my kids on it now and then and that's it.

I let it auto updgrade last time I used it and all appears to be well.

thank you both again. It certainly does seem to be somewhat of a drawback, that the only people I can chat with must have hotmail and MSN. I think I may plump for ICQ for the time being, give it a shot and let you know how it seems. Thanks once again

I have AIM, MSN , and ICQ, but my favorite of all is still ICQ. It also has the ability to do file transfers. When I get an objectionable request, I put that in the "IGNORE" section and go on. I keep reading about ICQ being ADWARE, but I don't have any idea where this comes from. I get no ads from ICQ.

Well if you look at ICQ closely you will see that the ads keep changing and they also show up depending on what features of the program you are using. I don't object to the ads as much as I do the fact that they can access my computer and make changes whenever they wish. That's why I keep it shut off and is probably also why it is considered Adware.

As far as I am concerned once something resides on my computer I want to be consulted as to whether I want to allow changes or not. Anything less is trespassing in my view.

Different users will no doubt have different outlooks but that just happens to be mine.

BTW files can be transferred using Windows Messenger also to the best of my knowledge.

Trillian is the program. You can communicate with people on ICQ, MSN, AOL, and even IRC. There are absolutely no ads and it has very little overhead and is skinable. I've dumped all other messengers in favor of it.

doctoreddiechakra,

There is an easy work-around to eliminate 99% of the ads, banners, etc. associated with ICQ. After you have the main program installed, and played around with the "Preferences" until your head feels like it is about to explode, and you have it setup the way you want it. Go here: www.icqplus.org and download the latest version of "ICQ Plus". Not only will you be able to change "skins" (there are links to tons of them at that site too), but by default, this little program blocks all the banners, ads, etc. on the main window and subsequent dialogs.

Pilgrim. I don't know what OS you are running, but when I was running ME, Plus caused a number of problems, not the least of which it wouldn;t shut down. Had to CAD to kill it.

If it is in your startup folder, you would see overlays on any of your browsers. Whether or not ICQ was running, and AFTER plus was killed! Still had to reboot to clean it up.

I will NOT install it on any of my systems again, IMHO!.

You don't have to HAVE MSN, you just need to have a hotmail account, it's not as if you need to USE it, just have it.
IMPORTANT! If you go with msn msgr remember to UNSELECT the "list my account on the public spam boards" (or something like that) else you will get a TON of junk mail.
Maybe some of the codemasters here could come up with a pc911 IM program?

I use ICQ and do not get any popup ads from them. I like the feature of being able to send a URL to freinds. I don't think any of the others have that feature.
I you a newbie then your decision will be based on what your freinds have. It is not likely you be be able to get them to change if they already use MSN or AIM.

Most kind, all of you. Thank you in particular for the download to prevent ads. I am more than slightly concerned when you speak of a program being able to carry out changes or actions inside my computer. How is this possible? Or desirable?

The biggest drawback to ICQ is the countless pages of programs that are available over the web which are created for hacking ICQ users and even ones that allow people to kill your system through ICQ.

ICQ is a hackers paradise.

Not necessarily it would depend upon what permissions you have given to ICQ. If it is given full permissions then it can do whatever it wants and anyone using it in an unscrupulous manner can exploit that.

ICQ is fairly secure if configured properly and used in conjunction with a firewall.

See this page for tips on securing ICQ:

Even though I am no fan of AOL, I do like using AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), it easy to use, popular, has many features, and can easily be customized to your liking.

If you are running a firewall, and you SHOULD be, (lets assume its ZAP), then you can restrict ICQ to certain ports. 5190 is what is suggested. Works fine for me.

Sorry for the double post, accidentally put it in the middle, hate to disrupt the thread flow.

>It certainly does seem to be somewhat
>of a drawback, that the only people I can chat with must
>have hotmail and MSN.

I wanted to give an example of some of the little goodies that are available for free on the web.

Forum rules restrict how much of this i post, so i have compiled the descriptions of programs available from just one of the sites i mentioned above.

Please dont ask me for the link or program names.

How did i find them?

Couldnt be simpler.

> - ICQ Account cracker, uses brute-force technique to crack an online ICQ account. Get any account without having to steal their DB Can crack accounts upon dictionary based password lists.

> - Mass send pages to someones ICQ. Has support for IP spoofing of your messages as well as several bombing methods and status of the sent messages.

> - ICQ Addon to see the user information plus IP and such things, this program tells you the IP no matter if the user is using ICQ99 or 2000

> - Send spoofed ICQ messages, includes ICQ bombing and custom UIN sending/bomb.

> - ICQ clone with extra abilities such as send system messages, add to list without authorization, add silent, bomb with messages...

> - Adds people without there authorizarion with ICQ99
.
> - an Windows application based on CryptLIB (developped with Delphi 4.0). It provides a user interface to crypt text with blowfish and clipboard support to transfer text from/to a Chat program like ICQ or IRC.

> - will let you know if a user is invisible or on privacy mode, so nobody can hide.

> - sends a contact that will crash his icq, also send spoofed msg's .

> - Cracks active UINs on local machine or from ICQ 99 dat file.

> - message flooder, ping flooder, udp/tcp flooder, url sender ....

> - Bomb squad If someone has flooded you, he or she wasted his/hers time. This program helps you to clean it up. It simply deletes all unread messages. You can choose which uin account that shall be cleaned up.

> - This is another Icq bomber. Input of uin, if online and number of msgs.

> - opens 14 commonly ports commonly targeted by icq attackers, preventing them from connecting

> - Chatflooder, Horn+Text Flood.

> - it will delete the messages that are waiting to be read.

> - unhides users ips, bypasses authorization for adding a uin to contacts, unlimited visible list

> - bombs a person using ICQ with many messages with random UIN numbers

> - This will crash most our all versions of icq.

> - a little patch for ICQ to unhide the IP-numbers of everyone in your contact list. It seems like the hiding is done on the client-side, so if you get N/A in the IP field, the client still knows the IP but it wont tell you. Works with Icq

> - retrieves files from a persons computer that is running an icq homepage

> - the commercial (no free downloads) ICQ spammer by user's interests

> - Shows IPs of even hidden ICQ users

> - -Hides all Adverts, -Shows IP of your buddy, -Gives Auto-Authorization, -Gives back scroll-possibility in Multi-SMS Confirmation Dialog, -Speeds up start-up and send, -Prevents new download of Adverts, -Deletes some unused directories

> - Sends large numbers of messages from spoofed UINs (6kb)

> - the collection of tools: ICphantasaQ, icq flooder, password stealer, lametoy, lametoy dbkiller, uninvisibler, WFIPS2, icq snoofer, icq portsniff, portscan 1.2 basic, icq swat, and icqrevenge

> - A nuker for icq. A little bomber included. Easy interface. (206k)

> - listens for many common icq attacks and prevents them

> - Scans a given IP for the user's ICQ port.

> - Finds the port that ICQ is running on (6kb)

> - -Get rid of most Ads in ICQ, -Change "AutoUpdate" to "NO",-Allows you to add contacts without authorization - "AutoAuthorize", -Show IP Addresses of all your contacts

> - This applet allows users of ICQ to copy UIN specific stuff (like the notify list, message history etc)
.
> - retrieves any file of a persons computer. the person must be running an icq homepage

> - By opening many ports on local machine, makes it real hard for others to sniff your port. This is a very good protection against bomberattacks. Its not 100% safe though, but its better than nothing. Installation program included.

> - ICQ pager bomber for Win 95.

> - The following pages will describe what these trojan tossing idiots spend their time doing on the internet and how you can protect yourself from these morons. Check out two assholes who actually try and sell the numbers they steal.

> - learn about ICQ's security flaws, how to exploit them and how to protect yourself from malicious users who use these flaws against you. Stealing passwords, reading someone's entire hard drive, flooding, spoofing, DoSsing, utilizing the ICQ protocol and what not.

> - Send anonymous ICQ messages

> - spys on the ICQ client and catches information on an user

> - Allows users to secretly record ICQ chats, messages, and more along with the recording of various other computer activities.
.
> - cleans your contact list when someone floods you

> - A very handy tool for encrypting your private ICQ messangers from third parties. Starts off using only a weak 8-bit encryption, but once you register it, it uses powerful 400-bit encryption algorithims. It integrates right into your ICQ 99. Does not work for ICQ 98.

> - Trojan Horse, log in to a remote comp, you can upload/download/exec/list files. (84310 hits)

> - includes: wpd ip sniffer, icq flooder, pager bomber, XiCQ, ip2uin, icq deflooder, icq 99 port guard, push, and a program that manages all the .exes.

> - monitors for port scan attempts on common icq ports

> - ICQ Zap is an ICQ Bomber that runs in MS-DOS.

> - get the UIN-Password of a ICQ User - C source

> - grabs all the icq nicks and uins used on the local computer, and their passwords if they are cached.

> - ICQ Port sniffer (comes with all the required dll etc.)

> - the lastest version of ICQr Information, a program to reveal information stored in ICQ .DAT files, eg. password, address, contacts and much more.

> - -reads out information stored in Mirabilis ICQ Database (.DAT) files. It supports ICQ 99a/b, 2000a/b and 2001a. -is able to read and reveal personal information, such as nickname, address, birthday and many more. As it's one of only programs that can extract passwords of all supported ICQ versions, it can be used to get back your own lost password ! It is even possible to find *already deleted* friends,

> - a simple ICQ tool to see also users who have set to hide themselves at ICQ

> - The way ICQ works makes it possible for other people to track your IP and port, if they got your UIN.

> - Allows you to check if a user is online, offline, or invisible to you. Will only work if the other person web aware option is turned on.

> - This is an ICQ plugin that simplifies the use of PGP encryption when messaging your friends. This was too good not to tell you guys even if I am just another internet user. This is really using PGP as opposed to what is claimed about Top Secret Messenger.

> - monitors all ports commonly scanned by icq attackers (ports 1024-2000)

> - This is a good program for randomly changing your open ports, so it will be harder for lamers to find one.

> - Convert your ICQ UIN with this little fun program

> - icq port scan, un-invisibler, pass steal, dat password and more...

> - will exploit almost all the flaw in ICQ such as icq crash, spoof, check and sniff

Would i recommend ICQ?

Nope.

Would a firewall save me?

I dont have the knowledge to comment either way, but my guess is NO.

t-bare, I am utterly flabberghasted and dumbfounded. I think I shall need to sit in a dark room for a while after reading your spine-chilling post. I will wait awhile longer, just to see if anyone may verify whether zonelarm can offer protection against these threats.
Failing that, I shall avoid ICQ like the Black Death. I may be resistant to many strains of virus and toxins, but I doubt my computer is as robust.

And thats only 1 page.

There are thousands just like it out there.

I used to be an icq user, but when i started hearing about this stuff, i dumped it pronto.

Now, there is one good thing about ICQ. Its great for doing fast transfer of larger files: something i find to be very slow in MSN comparitively.

I didnt mean to give you folks nightmares though. Just letting you know.

Restricting its access to ports and protocols through a good firewall (ZAP), running a router with it, using effective anti-virus software, and Jason's script sentry - AND - following safe ICQ security practices posted earlier on this thread, will protect you just fine.

I have NEVER been attacked through ICQ, course, I only turn it on when I need it. Another safe practice. Like ANYTHING, when used wisely...

The ability to transfer files of practically ANY size is a MAJOR benefit. I like the direct chat service (only users on my contact list eh!) The sound schemes add something to it as well. Just don't use all the extra bells and whistles and follow what has been suggested, and you WILL be fine.

OR...

Get MSN Messenger and REALLY see what intrusive software is all about.

Greg

Yes, the new MSN is very intrusive. I avoid it as well.

I run the old 3.6 version. Not near as intrusive as the new, but all my contacts have to run it as well.

Most of my contacts have tried the new one, and didnt like it at all.

Thanks again.

Depends on your version. I am running the latest pro version 3.0.118.

On the programs panel, highlight ICQ, right click, select options, select "Allow access to ONLY those ports and protocols checked below'.

Select add, custom, under the description you can add whatever you want, I entered "logon.icq.com" (sans quotes). Then enter 5190 in the selected areas. BE SURE TO HIT ENTER, then APPLY. *** I also added Web servers for good measure, and to allow for transfers and other connections.

Again, only use it when you need it, and along with your other security measures you should be fine.

Don't forget to check that link you were given earlier about ICQ safety.

Good luck.

I am at home now, trying to follow Greg's instructions for configuring that port. Seems I have the free version of ZA, so I am not quite sure how to proceed. I'll see if his instructions work with this version. I would like to try ICQ first, make it as safe as possible, then maybe Trillian if it doesn't work out as planned.
I don't intend to use it an awful lot, just to chat now and then.
