""File not found" but is open and running."

I have an ancient free version of a program named GeoClock. It has worked just fine in many versions of Windows, This includes my current Win 10 version 21H1. It still works perfectly.

Some months back I started getting this notice when I tried to close the program:

Of course it will close instantly using Task Manager - just not by any of the usual methods for closing an open program.

Any ideas?

Jim.

Maybe try running in Compatibility Mode if you're not already. Maybe try uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling. What version of Windows was it written for?

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

Thanks for replying. It's not running in compatibility mode, so I'll try that after the next scheduled backup. I really don't want to risk doing anything that might cause the program not to work at all, not just not close properly. If this doesn't work, I'll try reinstalling

I don't remember when I got this version of GeoClock but I've had some version of it since Win 98.

I searched but didn't find a current download site for an updated version. GeoClock is a graphic display of the Globe, flattened of course. From its self-description:

.

Quote:
GeoClock w32 displays the current sun and moon positions,
and the parts of the earth in sunlight and twilight,
on high quality maps. Sun rise, sun set, and local
times around the world can also be displayed.

I run it mostly for fun and sunrise/set times.

Jim.

Well, I fixed it but not in a satisfying way that provides an understanding of the cause of the failure to close nor an understanding of why it now closes.

I created an identical (except for the name) desktop shortcut that opens and allows GeoClock to close as it is supposed to.

I kept the old shortcut but removed it from the desktop. It still will not close the program. Oh well..

Jim.

Might go into the registry and compare the two shortcuts.

I have an ancient free version of a program named GeoClock.

I used a paid version of GeoClock on my (then) Win95 machine; it didn't exactly install, I simply copied the program to the C:/ drive and it ran when I clicked on the .exe file via a shortcut I created. Similarly it didn't "Uninstall." You just deleted its folder. I seem to recall some difficulty putting it on my Win10 machine, so I moved on. It's been many years since I thought about it. Nice program, though. Written by a fellow here in Arlington VA who has long since retired and moved away.

That's interesting!

When I followed its listed link, I got a site in Hebrew that Google translated - which didn't appear to have anything to do with the actual GeoClock program.
