"Weird Desktop Icon Overlay"

I have an "x" overlay instead of an arrow on one of my desktop icons. I tried to reset the icon cache with Icon Cache Rebuilder but after a reboot the "x" returned. I know it is not a big problem but it is annoying. Thanks for any help.

I have gotten similar things on my icons since I allowed my hard drive to be indexed. Refreshing the desktop gets rid of them. Every now and again they pop up again and a screen refresh makes them go away. I don't run any other programs that would do that so It's probably some change to Windows 10.

If you want to get rid of ALL those annoying arrows, try the Ultimate Windows Tweaker (www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-4-windows-10). Not sure if you can change a single arrow or X but under Customization/File Explorer you can make them all disappear. Lots of other tweaking goodies there as well. I see no reason for the arrows anyway, everyone knows they are shortcuts.

Your link is good but the site isn't responding right now. There are other arrow removal applications available, or the registry can be edited manually to remove them.

You're mostly right about the arrows (who needs them? Not me.), though there are desktop icons that aren't shortcuts and shouldn't be deleted. We won't know for sure that removing the shortcut arrows will remove the red "x" until Robert tries it.

I don't know if the Ultimate Windows Tweaker is truly "ULTIMATE" but there certainly are a good number of tweaks available. I've used it, and others, for many years, though I need to update the version I have. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, the site isn't responding right now.

Jim.

Thanks. They were probably performing site maintenance.
