With meltdown and spectre out there now; I don't feel comfortable having an operating system that's not being updated. is there a best way to do that and to delete the partition?

Martin had mentioned that in my Lenovo post and I had January stuck in my head, but forgot about the year. What made me think it was this year was the Windows error message on the HP laptop with windows 7 and 10. The error message was on 7: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I have restarted it and that didn't help, so I started thinking that Windows wasn't updating it anymore. The laptop is very slow on both 7 and 10. the laptop is a GS60 535DX. I have SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, SpywareBlaster and Avast.
