"Windows Defender Will Not Stay On"

When I turn on my computer, Windows Defender turns on and then turns off. When I manually turn it on, it turns off within 10 seconds.

The problem seems to have begun after the Win 10 update entitled “December 12, 2017—KB4054517 (OS Build 16299.125)” was installed on my computer on December 13, 2017, but it may just be a coincidence. Windows Defender had been running fine for about a year, and as far as I know, no other changes were made to my system.

Going back to 2015, many users have reported the same problem with Defender, but none of the recommended solutions have worked for me:
• Ran Malwarebytes, but it did not detect any malware.
• Ran CCleaner.
• Ran the Avast and McAfee cleaners.
• Removed all references to Avast and McAfee from the Registry.
• Other than Windows Defender, I cannot find any AV software programs on my computer.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Richard

Jim,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. The link you provided provided me with other links, one of which reminded me that I used to use Bitdefender. Apparently I had not run the 'official' uninstall program, and once I did, Windows Defender once again is running on my computer.

What I don't understand is why my Defender problem suddenly began 2 weeks ago, although it's been more than a year since I last used Bitdefender. That will remain one of life's many mysteries.

Thanks again for your help.
Richard
