"Windows 7 Problem"

My niece has a Lenova laptop with windows 7. It will not boot and I have found no way to get to the OS. It does not see the CD in the bios. Won't boot to safemode. It loads some drivers and stops says please wait but nothing else happens. If you cannot boot or make corrections with a CD, is there any thing that anyone can think of to save the pc. Did not mention the USB port because I have no operating systems on a flash drive.

If I could find a way to access the command prompt so I could run the SFC I would feel better. I am afraid it is a very bad problem and probably would require a new hard drive and new installation of windows 7.

Please advise.

You may be able to access onboard diagnostic from within the BIOS (or some function key during bootup).

Otherwise from CD or Flash drive:

Is there a boot order option in the bios that would allow you to boot from cd? Is there an installation disc you can copy to usb on your computer?

It's possible that the Lenovo laptop has One-Key Recovery built in. I just dealt with a Lenovo that had the feature, and I believe it was in place back when Win7 was current. On the one I just dealt with, there was a tiny hidden pinhole, similar to the one you use to open a cellphone SIM card slot. I inserted a small paperclip into the hole and it brought up a menu with a few options (diagnostics, etc, and, best of all, an option to reset the laptop to factory from a hidden partition). The One-Key Recovery was prominently displayed on the machine near the spacebar. I would look for this first.

This machine has the one step recovery one the top left. I pressed it and nothing happened. It also has a small pinhole on the bottom left. Hunting for a small paper clip to try. In the interim it is attempting to recover a time when it would boot. Had already tried this and it did not work. Trying another date.

Will report back.

Thanks

The pinhole appears to apply to a mike which is shown next to the pinhole.

Tried the earliest date for restore. It was 5-7-17. It will not show anymore dates. Ended with error.

Boot options are SATA HDD and Network Boot Legacy PCI Device

No CD shown even with CD in CD Drive

Do not have the OS on a flash drive, only a CD.

Someone mentioned booting from within bios. Don't understand this since the option is not there.

Just do not see how this can be fixed unless I can get into the machine with a CD or something I don't know about.

Thanks

You could transfer the CD to a flash drive on another computer.

Have never placed an OS to a flash drive, suppose I will have to learn and do it. Was trying to avoid it because I doubt it will work.

Have been reading about the Lenova applications they have to solve problems like this one.

This problem caused by Microsoft Updates seems to be common, the big difference is I cannot use a CD whereas others do not have this problem.

Wish your site would notify me by email when someone post information to this problem.

It has this feature - or used to - but I don't use it so I can't say for sure it still works. At the top of the page your open thread is on is a link labeled Subscribe to this topic . Click it and you should be notified of new messages.

It's definitely the small pinhole that will bring up the One-Key Recovery. Try it with the machine fully off. Also, you could do a Google search for 'Lenovo One-Key Recovery' for full instruction.

Got a copy of Easy Recovery Essentials and installed on USB Drive.

The USB drive is recognized in the bios. Got it trying to do something, the light on the USB drive is flashing It is stopped on Starting Windows, been there an hour or more. May leave it overnight.
But frankly afraid it is a loss cause.

Just do not have an OEM copy of Lenova win 7 OS or a copy of win7 sp1.

If this Easy Recovery won't work doubt an OS would either.

Re going to Windows Start and stalling there. I have had this problem for the past year with some of the Windows Updates. If it does'nt proceed within about 5 minutes I shut all power off for about 1 minute, then boot up, cl on Normal Windows start, (doing the check start for errors gets nowhere)You then get a normal start with no stalling.

Hi, sorry only just looked at your query, I do a normal boot but because the power was shut off you get a black and white window recommending you either do a recommended error check or a normal windows start. I click on the normal windows start and the normal start proceeds , you get the "Windows Start" followed by the flag and then the password and click on the tick for Windows 7 to start.
In my setup using wireless broadband and phone the wall power is always left on for the modem. To start computer involves pressing the front tower button followed by swiping the monitor on switch.
Sorry again for delay in answering

At this point you need to make some decisions. I suspect that the hard drive is failing.

- Do you want to keep this laptop in service, or do you want to replace it with a different one?
- Is there important data on the hard drive?

If yes to either of these questions then you need to decide if you need to take it to a professional, or try to do the work yourself. If you want to try to do it yourself, you will need a cable or dock to connect the hard drive to another computer via a USB connection. This will allow you to determine the health of the hard drive and possibly retrieve data. At the very least, the drive will need a format and fresh load of Windows 7. To make this easier, you might also want a USB DVD drive.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.
