I'd think Word would do it. LibreOffice has an "export to pdf" function. I just tried it and it worked fine.

Thank you very much. I have downloaded Libre Office. Looks good so far.
Very smooth install and professional looking program.

I have been using Office Libre at home in Windows 10. I could not see paying for MS Office at home,

I often share documents from work at home using Office Libre. Never have any problems with it.

Open a word doc. Go to File menu, find "export to pdf." That should do it.

Which version of Word? Not present in Word '03.

It's not worded that way but is available in Word 2003. Check this site for the steps necessary: https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/templates/pdf_2003.html

When I saved a converted Word 2003 document to my desktop, and then tried to open it, I had to specify which program to use to open it. I chose Adobe and was not asked again when I converted another Word document.

Jim.

I was referring to opening a word doc in LibreOffice, if that's part of the confusion.

Yep. I'm using word 97. I know I have a later version laying around somewhere.

Install CutePDF and then from Word 97 you can "print" to CutePDF. Easy peasy!

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

You can do that from any program that can access your real printer. It is a "print" function, not a function of he source program.

Check your list of printers. You may already have a pdf virtual printer, as many pdf programs install one.

Edit: In fact on checking I see I have one called Microsoft Print to PDF. I don't know where it came from. It may even be part of Windows 10.

I installed CutePDF. I then found a later version of OFFICE 2000. I installed Office 2000 and removed office 97. Now when I open a file in Word 2000 I can convert it to PDF using either Cute PDF or Microsoft PDF. I used Microsoft and it worked perfectly.
Thanks for all the helped. You solved my problem.
