"Hotmail Is Morphing To Outlook" Wed Aug-01-12 10:35 PM by Les
Looks like Microsoft is eventually going to close down Hotmail and has setup Outlook as the new email address. If you have a Hotmail account and want to keep your Hotmail name e.g. doofus@hotmail.com you should probably set up a new Outlook account as the common names will probably be taken up pretty quick. I've got one setup with my Hotmail name and everything is working as planned. Anything sent to my Hotmail account is now deposited in a Hotmail folder in the Outlook account. Check it out HERE

Thanks Les I signed in to my old Hotmail acct and was taken to my new Outlook page. After snooping around a bit I couldn't find any info about creating a new Outlook acct and the welcome email from Outlook didn't shed any light on the situation. Do you know if the move is automatic or (in my case) temporary?

All you need to do is rename your Hotmail account. Open the Outlook.com site, click the gear, and more mail settings. Your Hotmail account will remain active until either you or microsoft decides to close it. A new folder will appear for your Hotmail messages and xxxxx@outlook.com will become your primary handler. I use Windows Live Mail as my email and newsgroup reader. I opened the properties for my Hotmail account and changed Hotmail to Outlook.com. Had to recheck remember password and entered the password. Now my Windows Live Mail has the Outlook account as primary and a folder showed up for the Hotmail account.
So far everything is working smoothly and I'll keep Hotmail working until I can get everything changed to Outlook e.g. sites where I've logged in and used the Hotmail account as the contact address.
Figured that somewhere down the line Microsoft will close Hotmail so I might as well get everything done before someone used my preferred mail name. If you're bill@hotmail.com and there is a bill@msn.com who sets up a bill@outlook.com before you then you will not be able to use bill.
