"My first question"

At this wonderful forum??????????.Did I do the right thing?

I installed an anti virus program on my computer and now a message keeps popping up about some sort of trojan or something while I am surfing It doesn't seem to be doing anything about it because I keep getting the message so I uninstalled the virus program and now I don't get that message anymore. My question is did I do the right thing?

Is this a test? . I never did well on tests.

If you just wanted to get rid of the message then you accomplished what you were trying to do.
If you wanted to do the right thing then no.

Install the free MalwareBytes, update it,then run a full scan and remove what ever it finds then report back.

Details...we need details. What AV did you install? What did the message say? Why would you uninstall an AV because it found something instead of having it clean out what it found?

Yep I kept my answer vague because the OP's question was vague.

gigabyte76543, please offer as many details as possible when asking questions on a forum like this. Thanks.

I'm running WinXP Home IE 8.My virus program was AVG. I installed Malwarebytes but can't get it to run on my computer after installation. It seems to install ok but when I click the icon to run the program, nothing happens. I've installed and re installed, still no luck.

This is what trojan's can do, block your security.
Start in Safe Mode. Tap F8 during the boot sequence and choose safe mode with networking. It will boot using minimal drivers. Then try running MBAM again. Make sure you update it. Keep us informed of your progress.

I can't seem to get the F8 key to work when starting this laptop. I was wondering if there is another avenue to explore to start in Safe Mode? Since the F8 key on this laptop also seems to be either the 'Next' or 'Fast Forward' key.

It only has those other functions after Windows has started. When you are booting, by definition Windows hasn't started.

It should be obviously apparent by now that this individual is clearly goading members of this forum, and is just here to cause a disturbance. It was obvious from the tone of each of his posts, and now he has proven it.

Actually, I found this place a year or two before that. I just couldn't bring myself to join for a while. But, in any case, let's make it a belated 10 year old 'welcome aboard'.

DSS can be had here. It just generates reports about the system and software installation and what's running. It doesn't fix anything. Similar to Hijack This, but more info. So G-byte didn't fix his problem, just by running that. I think his post was fabricated anyway. He's probably one of our former members that was banned.

Well, his name proves that he isn't totally illiterate, It proves that he can count backwards from 7 to 3 and can remember the name of a motherboard manufacturer. Give him some slack. At the end of the rope he used to hang himself would be fine. We should forgive him. Ignorance is not always bliss as proven by this mal-content, mischievous marauder. If only he smiled more, he would feel better.
Life is too short to waste time with troll graffiti. Little kids stamp their feet and pound their fists on the floor to get attention. I suggest he tries that next.

Every now and then one of these fools pops up here. They cause a little mayhem and then leave when they are ignored. This won't be the first time a former, barred member has logged in with a new username and pulled this stunt. And it likely won't be the last. No big problem.
