I just got a popup that seemed to originate from the SYSTRAY regarding an update. I haven't used SS&D in several years, however, I find a number of references to it in the Registry. I recall that I uninstalled it per recommendation of PCQandA members as being buggy or unreliable or something. This is the first that I have seen the popup and wonder how/why it appeared.
I still have it installed, and haven't seen any popups.
IMHO, it was and still is an OK on-demand scanner. The issues were always with the two resident processes, SDHelper and TeaTimer, which can be turned off.
I have a few on-demand scanners, and run one of them fairly randomly at least once a week. They all throw up the odd cookie, even though I have third-party cookies blocked in FF and IE.
spybot s&d Ver 162 is fine. I install it very often. The thing you need to watch is not trying any of the Betas. The betas are not stable at all and even caused some damage on my machine. Don't try the Betas and stay with Ver 162 as long as possible. After my Beta experience I have no interest in using the new one if they ever finish it. It's been in beta well over a year.
Thanks Mike, I reinstalled spybot s&d Ver 162 and will try it again. I didn't install tea timer and SDHelper per Paul's advice. I'm also running Superantispyware and Norton's Security Suite,... my paranoia runneth over.
