"Joining A Workgroup In XP"

I have two Windows XP machines hooked up to the same router. I have, on both machines, changed the workgroup name to the same name. However, the two computers don't appear to see each other on the network.

What do you think is the issue?

The folder or Drive you want to share needs to have Sharing enabled.

1.
Right-click the shared folder or drive, and then click Sharing and Security.
2.
Click Share this folder

Are the computers XP Home or Professional?
If I recall (it's been a while) for XP machines you want to be in a home group. In W7 you want to be in a work group
Did you run the Network wizard on both machines and reboot?

Both are XP Home Edition. And that's backwards. It's work groups in XP, home group in 7.

Do I need to run the setup wizard and then save the settings to a disc and run that on the other machine? I read something about this but was hoping I wouldn't have to go to the store and buy more CDs.

You will not need to save the settings to a disk. That option was put in place to ease the setup on non-XP computers. Two XP computers should be ready to go when you run the wizard on both and set file sharing on the folder(s) of choice.

I would double check that you don't have a typo on one of the Workgroup names. Also, follow what Ttech is saying about disabling any software firewalls you have running.

Do I need TCP/IP enabled?

I was trying to have one machine disconnected from the internet but still allow file sharing between the two.

I beg to differ. The way I stated works for me. I wasn't talking about the Homegroup feature in W7, it was more about sharing files between XP and W7 boxes.
In your case if you use the name homegroup for both I believe it would work. But it sounds like you may have it sorted now anyway.

I imagine so, the computer that is connected to the internet is able to see other computers on the network.

C:\> IPCONFIG.EXE

What IP (ranges) are you getting on each computer?
What is the IP of your router ("gateway")?
While we're there, the subnet mask?

W7's "Home" vs "Work" group classifications are meaningless/worthless IMO.

You have something actually shared on each computer?

Have you "browsed" for the other computer?
Windows Explorer | My Network Places | Entire Network | MS Windows Network

> Do I need TCP/IP enabled?

Do you have it disabled?
If so, enable it & see if your network appears. If so, you can deal with the other situation afterwards.

ok here's what I found:

"Computer A":

IP Address: 10.1.10.128
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.1.10.1

"Computer B":

Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address: fe80:ffff:ffff:fffd%5
Default Gateway:

Tunnel adapter Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address: fe80::5efe:169.254.173.132%2
Default Gateway:

I have "browsed" for the other computer, as you said by going to "my network places", "entire network" and looked at each computer on each network. "Computer A" can see every computer on the network except "Computer B" and "Computer B" cannot see any computers.

There is a file on "Computer B" that is in a shared network folder, but no other computer can see the folder (I have "share this folder" checked).

The "fe*" are IP6 addresses.
The 169.*.*.* is a local address & is non-routable (so won't see anything from the Internet).

Unless you get (or also get) an IP in the 10.1.10.* range, you're not going to network (with TCP/IP).

I do have TCP/IP disabled currently, I wanted to try to use NetBEUI so that I could connect the two computers without hooking the one up to the internet.

Am I to assume that that won't work?

If there is, I'm unaware of any such setting. It's a D-LINK router. I don't have the product manual for it. I don't see any buttons on it that could have such functionality so I imagine if it was capable of it, I'd have to do it through software.

It's a DSS-8+ Ethernet switch. I'll have to ask around and find out what the login info is for the web config page.

That's not a router just a switch so you won't have that config page.

Yes, same project.

The only reason I'm bothering with this is that every guide I've ever read about setting up a PC to record audio says "don't connect it to the internet" and "don't run antivirus software on it."

Thus, the second computer.

Just want to clarify the setup. On the computer that does connect to the internet, and share files with the other computer, you have both TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed. On the computer that doesn't connect to the internet you only have NetBEUI installed.

On either computer, go to the Run dialog box, Start-Run, and type the following:

\\computername

(where computername is the network name of the other computer)

Then click OK and wait... maybe up to a couple of minutes.

You should eventually get an explorer window showing the shares on the other computer. Note that this won't work if you don't have anything shared on the other computer, or if file and print sharing is not turned on, or if there is a firewall blocking file and print sharing.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

The one that is supposed to connect to the internet has only TCP/IP installed. The other one has both TCP/IP and NetBEUI.

Should I try putting NetBEUI on both?

There is another way to do this is leave both systems configured normally and connect them to each other Via a "Crossover" Ethernet
cable. This will share files but not transfer any internet to the
music machine. The system that gets internet would need two Ethernet cards. One gets internet using a "Cat 5" cable and the other Ethernet card should go to the other machine using a "Crossover" cable. You can
share files over the crossover but not internet. This setup needs no
router.
