I entered my email on Tuesday and they responded today saying that my Google Drive access was ready. I set it up and it appears to be working from Canada. Set it up for Google to notify you when your drive is ready, just as I did, and an email will be sent to you when it is ready.

Just checking it out, more or less. I just installed the Google Drive Android app on my Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphone, and placed a few photos and such on my desktop Drivespace. Within a minute or so the files were available on my Samsung phone. Google docs also becomes available on the Samsung when you install the Google Drive app.

I'm just playing with it so far. I'll keep you informed with what I find as I use it more.

How did you get the photos into gallery so you can use them as IDs for phone contacts. I have the google drive icon on my LG Olympus V phone and can access my drive UI see the pictures but when I download them, There doesn't seem to be an option to save them. They download and I see the pictures open up but then the only option is to make the photo larger or smaller. There should be a way to get them directly int the gallery on the phone. I hope.

Ed,

I have not had much time to play around, so I tried just now to figure it out. Like you said, you can see the files but not copy or move them. I tried looking at the SD storage on my phone with an file manager app, and also using my desktop to view the SD contents, and the files don't actually appear to exist on the mobile unit. There is an option in Google Drive to set the file to 'offline' status, but that still didn't seem to place the file in the file system anywhere I could find. I need to look into this further.

Maybe jmc knows. He plays around quite a bit with smart phones, from what I understand.

I agree 100% it's just another way for Google to get more information
about us. Don't ever think your getting anything for Free. "Free" is
just a hook they use to get more info.
I have about 6 terabytes of space here in my own Cloud.
Google scans and reads all the Gmail that goes through its system and that cloud will be no different.

Facebook is another one going that path with that Timeline bull shit. I almost never go there anymore. I hate seeing "Like" or my
facebook Name everywhere I go on the Web.

I won't be using Google Cloud either.

Enough is Enough.

I agree with leaving sensitive files out of the 'cloud'. But for general purposes, which is all I would ever use it for, I think it's perfectly safe and sensible.

But then again, I really don't suffer from any form of paranoia.

I had "docs" before & now looks like I have "drive".

Google Drive versus your Documents List
Transition from your Documents List to Google Drive by learning everything that's the same, different, and completely new.

What's the same

Some things in Google Drive will be familiar since you’re used to seeing them in your Documents List.

Create Google Docs by clicking the red Create button
Share with exactly who you want -- with control and without email attachments
Search or sort your list of files, folders, and Google Docs
Preview files and Google Docs

What's changed

Collections are now called folders
More things have been added to the Settings menu, including upload settings
The left navigation has new views:
* My Drive
* Shared with me
* Activity
The Home view is gone. Instead, use My Drive to organize all of your files, folders and Google Docs.

Use Google Drive with other Google products

Share a photo stored in Google Drive directly in Google+
Search for images using keywords (Google Drive uses Google Goggles technology!)

This is a dog!

I thought I'd use it as yet another backup for our family photos (1165 folders - we sort by date and event). I fired it up about 20 hours ago. It has completed the first sync yet. It seems to go back to square one on reboot - I rebooted about 30 minutes ago and it's up to folder #78. Prior to reboot it was at 6 hundred and something, and it's impacting on everything I do on the 'net.

Also worth a read - Who owns your files on Google Drive.

I haven't noticed any of the issues you note, but then I only have a couple of hundred megabytes in Google Drive. The original sync took a couple of minutes, and then seconds whenever I make changes. Is your broadband connection up to snuff?

It's fine for downloading and browsing. However, upload speed is pretty limited by my ISP (standard practice in Australia).

Right now on Speedtest - 3.57mbps down, 0.62mbps up.

How much data does your entire collection contain? Your download/upload speeds are fairly poor. Is this typical of ISP performance in Australia?

It's the upload killing him that's only about 25 KB/s upload so it would take a long time to upload anything substantial.

4gb and yes, in that order.

There is a huge political debate in progress here. The current government, which is currently on the collective nose despite having the strongest economy in the developed world has set in motion the construction of a National Broadband Network (FTTN) which will offer 90% plus of the population speeds up to 10x faster. The troglodyte conservative opposition who are firmly in the pocket of our two current major telcos (can anyone say "vested interest"?) have more or less convinced the idiot public that the only benefit to the nation will be faster movie downloads, and are threatening to can the whole thing and revert to the existing copper network (owned by the above-mentioned telcos). Heaven save us from conservatives!

Can't stand the conservative movement in any country I've seen it represented in, at least not in the current form. I know where you're coming from. Basically just a thinly-veiled cloak with a greedy, capitalistic, all for themselves and to hell with the rest substrate.

Paul,

I would suggest you start the upload in the evening and let it run all night through to completion. Eventually, it will finish. From that point on, it will only be dealing with changes to the files, which should be a significantly smaller data set. Until your bandwidth improves, I'm thinking there is no other way if you want to make use of the 'cloud' concept. I doubt Google Drive is the issue, I would think trying to move 4 GB through such a tiny straw is the problem.

Further research into google driver downloads says you cannot edit the files. I finally got my photos into my android phone for ID photos by emailing them to my google mailbox. Sync you phone. Download them and you will get a little menu button beneath the photo when it downloads. Click on the menu button then or more. Then click on set.
That will give you the option to put it into contacts or the gallery.
I also had a hard time getting a ringtone I had on my old phone into my new phone. I emailed it to my google mailbox and downloaded it to my phone. It goes into the music folder on your sim card. Ithen used a folder program and went into the Sim card and created a new folder called ringtones. I copy and pasted pasted the ringtone from the music folder into the ringtone folder and it worked. It added the old ringtone as one of the choices when you go into settings , sounds and ringtones. After that, I then un-synced my phone again.
Nothing is ever easy
