"how do I stop gmail from updating permanently??"

I do a ton of IT work and everybody where I work calls me for every single computer problem (& the place is huge)

All the gmail accounts keep changing to the "new look" & it messes up half the computers here (all the folders are jumbled on top of each other, won't scroll right etc.)

How do I either stop the damn update or fix the problem???

~John

That must be a PITA for you. I Googled it and all that comes up is about
Android updating. If it's Gmail in the "Cloud"(online) I really doubt there is a way to stop that kind of updating. I suppose you just need to roll with it.

OK, I'll bite, what "new look"? I don't normally go to the GMail web site to access my Gmail. I just get it through Windows Live Mail along with all my other email accounts. I just went to the web site and it looks the same to me as it always has.

There is a whole new look to it, but it doesn't work right on about half of our computers. It gives it to you automatically and for a while there was a setting to "temporarily reset to old style"

Now, the setting seems to be gone and on a bunch of our computers the users gmail is virtually unusable . The folders are all jumbled on top of each other and it won't scroll right. My wife's LT just started doing it Today and no setting change I make seems to fix it now.

Perhaps if you delete all the cookies for Gmail it will refresh it
so it looks normal. What browser are you using to get the Gmail?
If you use Ccleaner check all the boxes and do a total clean.
Old cache/cookies sitting in the browser could be the problem.

Another thing you can try is on the computers that are having trouble
you can use Windows Live Mail configured using Imap to get your Gmail
through that Like MSU does.

I had tried all that but nothing worked.

My wife was using IE so not knowing what else to try at this point I DL'ed and installed firefox. Using firefox it works perfectly thank god.
Note I get to install ff on at least 30 work computers........

yes, I did.

Made no difference at all on the screwed computers.

The only thing that seems to fix it is to swap to Firefox.

this annoys the hell out of me even though the new version works fine on my three PC's, an ipod2 & a Mac Air.

I DON"T LIKE the new version, I just want the simpler old version that has worked fine for me for years. (I could care less about themes etc.)

So far, it hasn't messed up my Android phone which is where I get 95% of my email but they will probably screw that up next........

I'm with you!!! I DON'T want the new look either!!!!! I keep going to the bottom of the page and clicking on "visit previous account version of account settings screen" and on a couple occasions my account was already automatically in the new format so I had to go into settings and select revert to the old format. I hope that choice doesn't get taken away. I may consider not using gmail anymore if they keep taking my choices away. I want to use it the way it suits me, not they way they want it to suit me. It seems like everytime we get used to something they want to change it. Change can be good but a least give the user a choice in which settings they would like.

so far I still can revert to the old style, just takes me a few extra clicks. I just was able to access the old style again just now, doing the same thing.

Edit: Maybe it's high time I learn how to set up gmail to come thru my "Windows" mail account. I did this for my sister but can't seem to do it for myself for some reason.

Go to the Google website and look for the how-to information on settings required to set up your Gmail account(s) for use with another mail client.

yup, I did do that actually and it looks quite involved so I'll likely put it off. I didn't have to go thru that lengthy process when I did my sisters email but she has Windows 7 so that's likely the reason?

And, my choice is now gone in gmail, no longer can revert back

That's exactly why I don't use web based email.I never liked gmail and only keep a hotmail account around for a throw away.

Web-based email is not the problem here, it is the user interface. I use Gmail and find it to be excellent. I do not, however, use the Gmail web-based interface. I use Outlook to handle all of my email accounts, Gmail included. When used this way, as a POP account, you would not know Gmail from your local POP service, but with fewer contraints and limitations.

Screenshots of old & new?

Turn off JavaScript.
You'll be prompted to use "Gmail's basic HTML view".

So long as JavaScript is not allowed at google.com, I would think you should be OK.

Perhaps using this link https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=c would get you to the "basic" page - regardless of JavaScript, not sure?

I don't know what happened but when I signed into google on my mobile phone it downloaded ALL my GOOGLE Email contacts into my mobile phone. I did not want that I wanted to selectively add contacts to my mobile phone. Some people I communicate via email, I dont want in my phone contacts list. If I add a new contact on my phone, it is added to my google web page contact list. I don't want that. Does that have anything to do with SYNC?
