"New Nook lets you read in the dark or on the beach"

In New York City on Wednesday, the venerable bookseller unveiled a brand-new Nook electronic reader that it says becomes the first and only E-Ink-based device that lets you read in the dark, without having to clip on or supply an external reading light. And because you can read with it on a sunny beach as well as in a dark bedroom, Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch Jr. says Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, as the new reader is called, is "the most versatile e-reader that's ever been created."

This latest Nook costs $139 and will become available in early May,

Ive been contemplating getting an E reader.
I had set myself on the Kindle Touch.

But maybe I should wait and see. I dont have to read in the
dark much but it wouldn't be so bad to be able to do that.

I finally made up my mind and purchased the Kindle Touch E-Ink reader for $99. It has many advantages over the Nook. For instance I can buy one book a month for free. At the $10 price of most of Amazons books it will more than pay my cost of the reader in 10 months. In addition you can borrow Amazon books free from public libraries with no time limits or late fees. The Touch has a multi touch screen, portrait or landscape mode, and a web browser. It's scheduled for delivery tomorrow.

My only interest in it is actually for reading books, so the B&W screen is fine and far less eye strain than an LCD screen. It holds over 3000 books, and has free unlimited cloud storage, if you need it.

I will probably still buy a larger tablet for general computing use, probably the new Samsung Galaxy coming out later this year.

Are you expected to return the "book" to the Library?

It must depend on the library. Our local library gives you a choice at checkout of either 7 or 14 days. You can of course renew it at the end of that time.

I believe you log into the libraries Website and download it via
wifi. I don't think any "ordinary" readers have a usb port for a
thumb drive. They do have a cable with usb to plug into your Computers
usb. I have downloaded PDF books and Magazines and loaded them on
my reader through the USB/power cable connected to my computer.

For downloading books from a library, you need "Overdrive Media Console", which I believe all E-Books and tablets have. You also need a library card, which you have to physically go to the library to get, but they're generally good for 4 years, before you have to go back to renew it. Downloading books are the same as when you get an actual book from the library, it's usually 2-3 weeks. I think a new book is usually for 2 weeks. The libraries have an agreement with the publishers, and I think that there is a fee that the libraries pay(I'm not positive about that). I haven't actually downloaded anything from the libraries, myself, yet, but I have the library cards and the Samsung Galaxy Tab has "Overdrive" on it.

Edit: After the 2-3 weeks; the book is automatically removed from the device; I guess, through the Overdrive program.

Yes, I just didn't go into the details. At least with the Nook the Overdrive Media Console isn't on it. You have to install it on your computer along with Adobe Digital Editions. There's a web site for our library specifically for the digital books. When you checkout a book there it downloads into the Adobe Digital Editions app. From there you transfer it to your Nook.

It looks like with the Kindle all you need is the Overdrive Media Console.

Heck here's a link to my library with links to PDF files with instructions for various devices. Those should answer most questions.

The Kindle touch is the one I am wanting to buy.
and probably will buy within the next month.
I found out they sell it at Best Buy and I already have a 50 dollar
best buy gift card that I got over the holidays. So that will chop down the price for me. ha ha

After reading all the reviews I think the Kindle touch is
the best one for me. I like the Black and white text for reading.
and the color readers are too expensive.

I also think the amazon deal is a bit better than the Barnes and Nobel deal. Barnes and noble is like on the verge of bankruptcy and who knows what will happen to their service if they go there.

I don't know. The article says

Quote:
With Wi-Fi off, the company says, you can read more than a month off a single charge, based on a ½ hour of daily reading with GlowLight set at its default brightness level.
That would be a little over 15 hours. Maybe they're being conservative with the estimate.

Made an interesting discovery. I have not used any wireless device in my house in a while, I discovered that the wireless function in my Linksys E2000 router is not working!

Ordered a new router, I had to go to McDonalds to download a Book to my Kindle.
