My daughter will be moving into a new home next week and I'll be hooking up her computer and my granddaughter's computer. They currently have Road Runner and an old Linksys router (B type) that the granddaughers computer is hooked to with a wire. We don't want to switch over to a wireless setup for security reasons. The new home is pre-wired for Cable in all bedrooms. Which would be my best choice, buy 100 ft of patch cable and route it through the attic. Or, buy a second cable modem for the grandaughters room? We have no intention of renting another modem from the cable company. Would Brighthouse charge us for a second connection if we used our own modem in addition to the one they supply?

They would charge you for a second connection no matter who owns either modem. Not a good idea.
So your options are to run ethernet cable or use wireless. If you replace the router with a new on that supports WPA and WPA2, there should be no problem with security. Make sure that any wireless adapters in the PCs also support WPA and WPA2.
Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.
QUOTE: What's wrong with the wireless option as Ttech mentioned with wpa or wpa2 there would be minimal security concerns.
I agree..sooo much simpler - with a decent router and a couple of $20.00 wireless network cards (if these are desktops and don't have them already) WPA2 level security.

Yes Jim, I've bought cable from Monoprice in the past and intend on getting it from them again this time. It's the cheapest solution and will give the fastest trouble free connection.
After using wireless, I only use Cat on an Older machine that does not have wireless capability, I also use Cat on my Laser color printer. I also have a wireless printer Epson 710 Artisan which is my everyday printer. As I go forward with equipment I am going wireless wherever possible

Any computer I have that is going to stay put, ie. desktop, I go wired. I simply get a faster, more stable connection that way. I do have several portable devices that are wireless and the speed and stability can vary quite a bit even if they stay in one place.
