#0, "AVG anti-virus getting turned off, but not by me."
Lately, Windows Defender displays a message telling me my anti-virus (AVG Free version 8.5.421) has been turned off. If I go to Defender, the display shows that AVG is indeed turned off: the radio button by it is red instead of green. I click the "Turn on Now" box and Vista does the "allow" thing. I click the "allow" option, but when that window closes, AVG is still turned off. I've tried repeating the process with the same result.
What is turning AVG off, and why won't it turn back on?

Uninstall it and get Avira.I look after a bunch of friends computers and the phone calls about stuff went way down after I got them away from AVG.It seems to mess up a lot the last couple of versions.

Actually you can disable Windows Defender and that might fix the problem. If your O.S. is Vista, the Windows Defender comes as part of the O.S. and does not appear in the Add/Remove Programs List. You can disable the Windows Defender service rather easily, then either delete or move the executable, and that gets rid of it. On a new Vista Home Premium (x64) computer my wife got, I was having problems with the Security Center reporting her anti-virus {CA Anti-Virus Plus} was turned off, and like your situation, when I clicked to turn it on, that did not fix the problem. Further diagnosis revealed it was Windows Defender which was the culprit, since it was competing with the anti-spyware component in her CA anti-virus product. Good Luck ..

YES, on my wife's new computer running Vista Home Premium (64-bit), I discovered that killing WD and UAC fixed several problems:
-- Security Center (SC) was reporting CA AntiVirus Plus was turned off, and when I clicked "Turn On" it would not "turn on" in SC even though CA's Control Panel reported the AntiVirus was functioning correctly {all 'green' and 'secure'}. -- No more constant annoying prompts for approval from UAC. -- I could install and run SUPERAntispyware PRO with realtime monitoring along-side my other security proggies with no problems. -- I could run ERUNT utility with no interference from UAC. This last one is a laugh, because which system is more secure, one where you can freely backup your Registry in case of disaster or one where you cannot schedule automated backups of your Registry as can be done with ERUNT utility?
WD = Windows Defender UAC = User Account Control
What I think is really stupid on Vista is that UAC cannot be turned off without getting complaint from Security Center, even if you are the Administrator! Talk about Big Brother trying to "protect" me from myself!
