"Audacity"

I would like to download some streaming audio files. I installed Audacity, and started playing the streaming audio. I don't have a clue on how to record this using Audacity.

Thanks

I gave you this first Link so you can Visualize on how to do it.

How to Record Streaming Audio as an MP3 File Using Audacity

Download Audacity and Lame MP3 Encoder

I wasn't sure where you Downloaded it, so here's the Homepage. If you haven't Downloaded it, here, do so. Also Download the Manual. You can get it in PDF Format. Don't forget to get the Lame Codec if you want to save your Audio/Music in MP3 format. -- (Edit: To use the Lame-Codec, just Download it, and save it to the Audacity Folder. When Audacity asks you for it, just Point it to where you saved it. It won't ever ask you again.) --: You have to Record the Audio while you're listening to it. When you Save it, ... just Click "Save" in the File Menu. It'll automatically save it as an MP3 File. If you Click "Save As", it'll save it in a Format that Audacity uses if you want to "Edit" the File later. It helps to do "Test" record first to get the Audio Levels right. If they're to High, you'll get a lot of Distortion.

I Hope I made some sense of this. I'm in a bit of a hurry right now.

Thanks, but I am ashamed to say that I have not made any progress. I downloaded LAME MP3 encoder, as well as printing out the manual.
I started an audio stream. I could hear it coming from the speakers.
I pressed record. There was just a flat line moving across the screen. The save button was not highlighted. I know I am doing something wrong.

Thanks for listening.

Another thing.
I went to view>Float Mixer Toolbar.
All that comes up is a box that says Audacity Mixer Tool Bar, but shows no toolbar. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you need to set your soundcard up to use "Stereo Mix" for recording. You'll find it in Control Panel, Sounds, Recording Tab.
Be aware though that a lot of manufacturers are blocking this at hardware or driver level and you may not see an option for "Stereo Mix" or "What you hear" (which a lot of old Soundblasters labelled it).

OK. I may have figured it out. Here's a Screenshot of my Set-up. Make sure you Double-Click on the Icon down by the Clock and enable all the Checkboxes.

In the "Drop-Down Menu, Click on Monitor Input. and then Press "Record", then after you're finnished Export as an MP3.

Daniel,
Keep trying with Audacity but if you give up:

I use this free one and then edit with Audacity. It comes with an edit app. but it is only a trial. The recorder is free.

What you've done is Undock your "Mixer Toolbar and Edit Toolbar".

To move the Mixer Toolbar, Hold-down the Left Mouse Key and Drag the Toolbar to the Position I've Indicated. Then in the View / Menu, Click on Dock Mixer Toolbar. Do the same with the Edit Toolbar.

Here's the View Menu where you Dock the Toolbars.

In your Image, this was the Arrow I meant you should Click on to Enable Line-In Audio.

The Version I'm using is 1.2.6 - For Windows, XP

I got the Lame_Codec here.

For All Users

Quote:
All users

1. Download an unzipped copy of the required lame_enc.dll here
Left-click this link, do not right-click
2. Do not open this file, but save it to your computer. As you will be using this .dll file directly for encoding it is recommended to save it into your Audacity installation folder. This is normally at C:\Program Files\Audacity. Once lame_enc.dll is saved to your computer:
3. Launch Audacity, click Edit > Preferences then the File Formats tab. Note: In Audacity 1.2.x, it may be necessary to click the left-pointing arrow top right of the window to reveal the tab. In Audacity 1.3.4 this tab is called Audio Files; in 1.3.5 or later Import / Export.
4. Look for the MP3 Export section.
5. Click on the "Find Library" button
6. In Audacity 1.2.6 this will ask if you want to locate the LAME encoder. Click "Yes". In Audacity 1.3.3 or later, click the "Browse" button
7. In the dialogue box, go to the folder where you put lame_enc.dll earlier, and select it.
8. Click Open, then OK.

In the same "MP3 Export Setup" section, you can then in Audacity 1.2.6 set the bit rate of the exported MP3 by clicking on the downward pointing arrow in the "Bit Rate" dropdown.

I didn't use the Codec for Version 1.3.X

I think the easiest thing for daniell to do would be to Uninstall, and then Reinstall Audacity. Maybe he Downloaded the one for a Mac or Linux. Even the Color of the Interface look different than mine.

Edit: For the life of me, ... I can't figure out why he's having so many problems. Except for going into >Preferences< to let the Program find the Lame_Codec and telling it where to Dump the Temp Files, it's pretty straight forward.

Thanks Ken. Thats what I have.

This is a Snapshot of a recording I was doing. It was a stereo Mp3(192kbps) on the hard drive. I could hear it through both speakers and her the stereo separation. Audacity was only picking up 1 channel.

I have Lame configured and have been using Audacity for some time to edit streams recorded with the program I posted about earlier. If I can master Audacity, I'll dump the other.

URL(s) of this audio stream you want to capture?

It could be easier, depending ...

Perhaps something like this:

"Screamer Radio"
http://www.screamer-radio.com/

Or simply a "downloader"?

Also, after I uninstalled it, there was a message saying that not everything was uninstalled, and that I can complete the task manually. How do I do it manually?

Sometime Programs don't Uninstall all Folders. There should be one in the C:\Programs Folder called Audacity and maybe a few Sub-Folders. there might be one called audacity_temp. What I did for my System was Create a Folder called Audacity Projects Folder. Then when it asks you where it wants the Temp Folder, you just Point it to that one.

Here's the Link to the Audacity Download.

Choose the Windows one version 1.2.6

To delete them Manually, just HightLight the Folders and Right-Click and select "Delete"

That's great. Things should go OK this time. I was just going to Edit my Post again before seeing yours. I was going to Post about the Edit Menu. There's an Unlimited number of "Undo's", so if something goes wrong when you're Recording, you can go back as far as you want to go to get things the way you want them.

That Option saved me a lot of time.

I'm not sure what's going on with Sourceforge, that's where Audacity is originating from. I'm having trouble Downloading it with Internet Explorer. This is straight from Sourcrforge.

Download this File here. audacity-win-1.2.6.exe

Ken, I should have been clearer. I just wanted to know whether there may be a problem with my sound setup in record.

I'm afraid I have some bad news regarding Installing Audacity. I did a bunch of Googling this morning (I should have done this before), and I doubt that you'll be able to Install the Program. It seems that (Microsoft - Vista) in it's Infinite wisdom doesn't have the Drivers or whatever. There may be a way to do this, but I don't think it would be worth the effort. If you still want to try something, you could try the Compatibility Mode.

Quote:
Compatibility Mode

Audacity may install on Vista in compatibility mode for Windows 95, and this may cause problems or error messages, or cause Audacity to crash when launching. If so, try disabling compatibility mode, and if any problems persist, run Audacity in compatibility mode for Windows XP. To change compatibility modes, right-click over audacity.exe in Windows Explorer, then click Properties.

Or you could try the Recording The Wave Out Mix in Vista, but from looking at the Previous Image you Posted, I don't think it will work.

Recording The Wave Out Mix in Vista

If you decide to give it a try and it works, Post back and let us know.

Sorry we couldn't be of more help.

Thanks ken:
As I stated in previous posts, I want to install Ubuntu but I chickened out. Will Umbutu 8.10 64 support Audacity?
Thanks again for your effort on my behalf.

As I said - more and more manufacturers are removing the "Stereo Mix" option from drivers or actually in the hardware itself. It's a DRM thang.

Apparently you can.

Software version used for this installation : 1.2.6

Notice the Operating System use for this installation : Ubuntu 7.04

It seem like other people are having Problems too.

Ubuntu Community

Note that this is a Secure Site. If you're having problems with it, type this into Google. "Ubuntu Community Audacity" - No Quotes.

The Search String I used in Google was Audacity Ubuntu

Take note that I don't have a Clue about Ubuntu.

Thanks, but there is a problem. My computer will only work with Ubuntu 8.10. It took me a long time to find out why that was the case.
On another forum, it was explained to me. My motherboard being so recent, needed the driver in 8.10. The previous versions do not have that driver.

URL(s) of this audio stream you want to capture?

It could be easier, depending ...

Perhaps something like this:

"Screamer Radio"

Or simply a "downloader"?

Thanks to the link of the Screamer Radio.
I enjoy listening to old time radio shows. Some can be downloaded, other just listened to.

This is an example.

That's because your driver is giving you a "Stereo Mix" option but his doesn't.

I want to install it on my MP3 player. I think what is happening is that when you click on the downloaded item, it merely takes you back to the website.

I'll assume your MP3 player (model?) cannot play Real Audio Files (.ram)?

I'll assume you can play Real Audio files on your computer?

What I would do is to download the .ram files, then get a program to convert them to MP3. (You would need to have the Real codecs installed for any conversion program to work.) Who knows (I don't) maybe even Real Player can do that? (I'll assume you have Real Player & therefor the codecs.)

This looks to be one. (I am unfamiliar with it & would investigate it.)

When I download a ram file and check its properties, it only contains 204 bytes. How can that be enough?

You're right.
I forgot about that. It is not enough (but it sure was quick, wasn't it ).

What that file is, is a pointer to the actual file (stream).

Now the harder part (not that it is really hard) is that the "URL" is for an rtsp: file (stream), that you have to in some way download.

Some download managers (Net Transport) will automatically parse the "204" file, others you may have to do it manually (Orbit Downloader).

(Net Transport is pay, Orbit is free.)

Take, Les Miserables, #1 The Bishop.
(204) Link is, http://www.otr.net/r/lmis/1.ram
Opening that in a text editor shows:

rtsp://www.otr.net/28.8/lmis - Les Miserables/lmis.1937.07.23_The_Bishop.rm?title="The Bishop"&author="Les Miserables"
Pasting that into Orbit will download the file (3.5 MB, though for some reason Orbit is incredibly slow in download it).

At that point, you should have lmis.1937.07.23_The_Bishop.rm on your computer. See if that will play. (I cannot verify.) If it does then all that should be left is to convert it. (If it doesn't, then I'm not sure offhand.)

OK, I can verify, it does play. (I thought it was going to be music, but it is the actual dialog.) Jon Valjean I have purchased your soul, I withdraw it from the spirit of perversity and give it to almighty God.
