Changing browser for say Firefox or Opera will give you a slight edge in speed, but perhaps more importantly an enhanced and safer browsing experience.

5-6 secs is a little long, but a lot depends upon the speed of your PC, your Internet provider and of course the website itself and general internet traffic.

Have you tried cleaning up your temp internet folder and temp files generally? Using CCleaner can help.

With the numbers you posted in a recent topic:

Download Speed: 24809 kbps (3101.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 487 kbps (60.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

http://www.pcqanda.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=2&topic_id=496251&mesg_id=496251&page=2

I don't think you will be able to significantly improve your performance with any other browser. It would appear you need a different ISP.

As a comparison, here are my numbers and I am very satisifed with my performance:

Different ISP? Her speeds are of those most only dream of. Including myself.

There has to be some other reason for a webpage to take that long to load.

Run another test chandrax.

Your upload speed does seem to be low considering your download speed. I have regular RR not turbo and it is supposed to be 10/384. Rochester Turbo is 15/1 and Turbo boost is 22/1 or 1.5 and the boost is not constant. Your download is much closer to Turbo boost but pretty normal for what I have seen posted for NYC, but upload is closer to basic. My current test is:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 9.60 mbps (1229.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 300 kbps (37.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Edit: This gives you an idea how much they vary.

None of this amazing discussion regarding bandwidth speeds, whilst very interesting (not), answers ChandraX's initial question.

Chandra Yes, alternative browsers will most likely be faster. But there are other factors which affect speed of page loading more than the browser or bandwidth. Namely latency, traffic shaping and number of users per pipeline.

You can install and use as many browsers as you want - no need to uninstall anything (not that you can uninstall IE7 really, he heh). You can still leave IE as your default browser until you decide which one you like most.

Just try Chrome, Firefox, Opera or anything that takes your fancy. I'm currently using Chrome and compared to IE it's night and day in terms of page loading speed.

It appears that you are running your speed test through RR and that you are subscribed to RR Turbo or RR Turbo Boost. RR Turbo in NYC has been having some issues and the download speeds have been dropping as low as 4Mbps at times. Do you currently have RR Turbo or RR Turbo Boost as your service? RR in NY offers different speeds in different parts of the state.

Bandwidth / speed is not the only parameter to affect pages loading ... what about latency (the queuing and processing bit of the downloads). This can hugely affect page loading and can be either with your ISP or any other processing link along the way.

My average download according to www.Speedtest.net
is 40.97Mb/s
My Average Upload is 3.33 Mb/s

Also how many tabs do you have starting in IE 7? this will slow it down if you have a lot of tabs when starting.

I Use FF as my primary browser.

The point was your response: "Different ISP? Her speeds are of those most only dream of. Including myself. There has to be some other reason for a webpage to take that long to load." was to posted numbers of 3101kb/s and 61kb/s which is far less than half what you have.

In this post she had far better numbers.

Her numbers are all over the place. Something's wrong with the ISP.

The modem was checked a few weeks ago....and was said to be fine..by R.R. tech...
i have no router, or LAN card..

i think it may be as suggested.it depends on the traffic.

Speed tests are greatly misunderstood. Below are four tests from the same testing service to four different test servers, Jacksonville FL, Atlanta GA, Greensboro NC and Dallas TX.

In theory the best results should be from Jacksonville, that server is less than 50 miles away, but it is consistently slow. Atlanta is nearly 350 miles away and usually shows my highest speeds. Dallas is even further away almost 1000 miles, and usually shows good speeds.

A major factor is the latency to the server, how long it takes to reach the server, the lower that latency number (Ping) in milliseconds it is the more likely the speed figures are accurate. The location and latency is indicated in all these results.

http://www.speedtest.net>

http://www.speedtest.net>

http://www.speedtest.net>

http://www.speedtest.net>

I like to use speedtest.net because I can choose any server I want for the test. The nearest to you is not necessarily the best, and you get enough information to determine the test conditions at the time of the test. All the above tests were made within a few minutes of each other.

I get pretty much the same (+/- 10%) from any server in Australia, and about 20% lower internationally. That's not a problem with individual servers, rather a reflection on the pathetic state of Broadband in Australia generally.

I'd give my eye teeth to be able to complain that 24,809 kbps is slow.

With the numbers you posted in a recent topic:

Upload Speed: 487 kbps (60.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

...

I don't think you will be able to significantly improve your performance with any other browser. It would appear you need a different ISP.

As a comparison, here are my numbers and I am very satisifed with my performance:

http://www.speedtest.net>

You know, I'm not getting this. I've been half watching this thread and this morning I thought I'd run the test.

Using Recommended Server:
Download speed = 1217 kb/s
Upload speed = 333 kb/s

Using NYC:
Download speed = 1474 kb/s
Upload speed = 501 kb/s

(I'm getting a moderate signal strength now).

So it seems that Priscilla's Upload speeds are slow, the download is very fast (compared to mine). Web pages loading is 'download'... isn't it? (I watch my usage because I'm using AT&T mobile broadband so I have a 5 Gb limit - I download a heck of a lot more than I upload)

So shouldn't her pages load A LOT faster than mine??? I'm scratching my head... those page load times compare to mine. There must be something else involved? Doesn't there?

This whole crazy thing reminds me of when i was trying to lose weight

1 am 5.9 inches and i weighed 138lbs......so i joined a gym and had this real good trainer who worked my butt off, and in 3 months i lost only 3 lbs.i was checking the scale everyday and getting more depressed ......but when looked in the mirror i saw i had a six pack abs and more definition, my trainer kept telling me to stop looking at the scale and look in the mirror.....i lost baby fat but gained muscle.....since muscle is heavier then fat i thought i was not losing.actually i was gaining muscle......so i guess this whole crazy thing about up load, and download, will drive us crazy...

I'm not going to worry about it because I'm convinced it all has to do partially with network traffic.

so I'm going to enjoy my speed and settle for the numbers i have now...

You were trying to LOSE weight??? I'm 5.10 and I dunno... when I was in my early 20's... I had at least 25 pounds on that... and I looked good (even though I didn't exercise, but one tends to be firmer at that age...).

Sorry, I'm totally OT.

"speedboost" or speedtest(.net)?

Unreliable like what?

Given the small test sampling that speedtest.net uses not to mention all the other variations out there - Internet itself, routing issues, ISP issues, various "speed boosts" that an ISP may or may not apply at a particular time, his numbers are within reason.

Like the numbers in post #52. That speed is highly unlikely. Look at it again.

I want to know what my actual speeds are, as closely as possible. I don't want a speedbooster added that falsely leads the user to believe that, that's what the speeds actually are, when they're not.

Every time I run speedtest.net, my speeds are pretty much the same, which conveniently is the full speed that I pay for. I have the best ISP in the world (for me) and shudder at the thought for when this greatness will end.

Just to satisfy anyones curiosity have you run a different browser yet just to see what it does.
It would literally take less than 2 minutes to download, install and run one just to see.

EDIT:Also, have you tried running IE7 with no addons to see if one may be causing problems?

Your speeds there are fine.

Explain "5-6 secs to load a site".

You type in http://www.pcqanda.com, hit return, then what?

one-one-thousand ... six, before it finishes loading?

And it does that for every site?

If so, I'd think there's a problem.

Do you have another computer to test on, or a neighbor's laptop you can plug into your cable & test with?

If you boot form a live Linux CDROM, does the problem persist?

Run the http://www.speedtest.net/ link & post the picture here (so we can see the "ping" numbers).
