"Linksys router"
Mon Oct-22-07 11:26 PM by DJC

I have a linksys router Befsr41w version 2 When I use router speedtest.com gives me an average of 6.0 MB/s When I directly connect from cable modem to computer I get a speed of 1748.MB/S much faster. Comcast is my provider

However I need router to use my printer which is on LAN and my other machines which are hooked up to router.

My question is do I need a new wired router to get the higher speeds if so which brand and model?
Is there a cable modem with 2 output LAN lines so one could go directly to computer and the other to my router?

Please re-check your results. Also pay attention to whether the results you are seeing are MB-Mega Bytes or Mb-Mega Bits.

6Mbps(Mega bits per second) is a common speed for cable connections.

I've seen that before. Where the router considerably slows things down.

Try upgrading the firmware to the latest version.

I think Ttech wanted you to re-check because in your initial post you misplaced your decimal point, 1748.Mb/s instead of 17.48Mb/s .

Since My Mother board has 2 LAN lines I tried going from cable modem to one LAN line on the computer Local Area Connection 1. I then tried going from the Local Area Connection 2 on the computer to the router thinking this would work it did not.

I still think the above idea should work, It may take a setting somewhere in IPCONFIG if so where and what setting do I make?

It will take more knowledgeable than me to get this idea to work

I know I can go directly from modem to computer to get higher download speeds, I could also use the second LAN line to hook my printer up. However doing that takes away using my other 2 computers on a network and access to the printer away from the other 2 computers on my home net work.

So I am going to go cable modem to router to computer for now this is through Local Area Connection 2.

Again is my router to old Befsr41w version 2 would getting a new wired router help this situation?

I didn't see firmware for BEFSR41W Version 2 on the Linksys site. I saw a version 1, and here's the release notes for the newest firmware for that version.

Quote:
The Linksys Group, Inc.

Current Firmware : Version 1.1 Revision 17
Product PartNo : BEFSR41W

Ver #. Description
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1117 1. Added support for Netscape 4.x

1116 1. Add RAS login
2. IP/TCP/UDP filter
3. RIP-II
4. Send LOG file by email
5. DNS relay.
6. SNMP v2c, v3.0 support
7. 8Mbps throughput
8. Wireless Access Control
9. PRISM v3.0 support (FW ver1.3.5)
10. PPTP connection for Europe
11. Support Multi IPsec (ESP, Tunnel-mode) pass-through
12. Fixed upgrade bug
13. Fixed remote management saving configuration
14. Remove keep alive period time field on index.htm
15. Change default value to Keep Alive
16. Supports LAN PC ping device's WAN port
17. Added MTU setting feature
18. UPnP is disabled by default
19. Fixed HELP button link in SETUP page
20. Add note for MTU setting in FILTER page
21. SNMP is disabled by default in PORT FORWARDING page

1021 First Release
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So 8Mbps throughput is probably all this modem will do.

No, this won't work unless you configured Internet Connection Sharing on your PC, and that would then require some other changes to your networking hardware as well. Stick with a router.

What about running LAN line from Cale Modem to LAN Line 1 on my main Computer and running LAN line connection 2 from my Main Computer to my Laptop. I can put my printer on a USB Port and then share it would this work?

If you enable Internet Connection Sharing, that will work, but I don't recommend it. If you use ICS, then the main PC has to be up and running for any other PCs on the network to be able to access the internet. I much prefer a stand alone router.

What I cannot do is access Internet from laptop, which is connected via a LAN Line to my Main compter I have my main computer set up to share

Can you point me in a direction I need to go

I would prefer using router but still want my speed. MY router as you pointed out only has a 8Mbps throughput

Can you recommend a router with a far greater throughput. It must be wired router.

Until I get a faster router I am going to use Internet Connection Sharing for its speed. I may even get another NIC card to add to my computer so I can add my third computer.

I noticed it has fire wal. I will disable that as I already run a firewall and running 2 fire walls just slows things down

Why leave the routers firewall on. I already have a firewall.

I was under the impression 2 firewalls do not work well together and leaving the routers firewall on slows things down

2 software firewalls would definitely not work well together. Almost everyone with a router has the hardware firewall enabled and also uses some software firewall on their PCs. The hardware and software firewalls work together just fine, there are no conflicts between them.

Will you comment on why you recommended that wireless router? Please understand that I make no claims of expertise in wireless networking but my searching indicates it does not support WPA2. I thought that would be a requirement in today's world. Also, if you would please comment on WPA2 vs PSK2. Thanx.

I recommended that wireless router because it is the wireless version of the wired router I recommended. DJC was looking for recommendations for a router with high throughput. That was my only criteria for choosing those models. I know that "gaming routers" are designed for high throughput.

As for WPA2 vs. PSK2, I don't think you can directly compare them. WPA is a type of wireless encryption and PSK is a method of communicating the WPA encryption.

Thanks for your response. My understanding was somewhat along the line of your reply.
Another reason for my asking and confusion is that I am considering upgrading to a Linksys WRT350N router which is one of their upper-end gaming routers and in the setup instructions they do not use the acronym WPA but PSK. I have used Linksys routers for several years and before they used WPA in conjunction with AES/TKIP.

I have excerpted a few phrases from the setup instuctions:

These settings configure the security of your wireless network. There are six wireless security modes supported by the Router: PSK-Personal, PSK2-Personal, PSK-Enterprise, PSK2-Enterprise, RADIUS, and WEP.

PSK-Personal Encryption.
Select the algorithm you want to use, TKIP or AES. (AES is a stronger encryption method than TKIP.)

PSK2-Personal Encryption.
Select the algorithm(s) you want to use, AES or TKIP or AES. (AES is a stronger encryption method than TKIP.)

My Router is a BEFSR41W firmware update version 2

it only supports 8Mbps throughput

When Hooked to router I get 5.29 Mb/s upload of 1.67 Mb/s

When hooked from Cable modem I get 17.48 Mb/s and a upload of 1.79 Mb/s

I have Comcast with power boost, there is no boost when hooked to router. It was suggested in the post to checkout Motorola I do not need a Modem.

I need a router with a higher throughput than I am currently geting in my router.

All Test were done at www.speedtest.net

Right now I am using ICS connection since my mother board cam with 2 LAN connections. Like I said earlier I could also put a third LAN connection in my computer to hook up my 3rd computer or I could and I would prefer a router it has to accept CAT Cabling as I am not a wireless fan and I have only one computer that is capable of wireless.

I got a D-Link DIR-655 recently.
We're not currently using any wireless but I wanted that option available.
I'm VERY happy with it's performance. There's been a nice improvement in throughput over the Netgear POS we retired. My Vonage calls are much cleaner(no echoes).
I got it for $112 w/free shipping.
