Order Backup Disks from Dell - for Free?

-------

Dell Customers can now request a set of backup discs containing the factory-installed operating system as well as the device drivers and utilities specific to your system.

* Requests are limited to one (1) set of backup discs per system purchased.
* The backup discs requested must match the operating system that was factory installed on the original order.

Please note that Dell will provide you the most up to date Resource disc available, containing the latest drivers and diagnostic tools currently being shipped on new systems. This is great because my brother got me a Dell laptop from his company that they were getting rid of. It use to belong to another company employee. His company was replacing all their employees laptops with new updated models and selling the old ones for $100 to employees and/or their families.

Unfortunately there were no resource or OS disks to go along with it. I emailed Dell to request these disks, they refused to give them to me because I could not identify the original owner of the laptop. So I've been always fearful, I'd need to reformat in the future and be out of luck since I had no OS or resource disks.

Just recently I had to get a replacement motherboard from Dell and I had to go through hell to get it because I couldn't verify all the correct original owner information. They wanted to know everything that was on the original bill of sale. Name, address, phone number, etc.

All of the information I had was correct except for the zip code. They kept hassling me for 2 more hours because the zip code I gave them was incorrect. The owner swore the info was correct.

Finally the owner found the bill of sale and found that I didn't include the +4 part of the zip code.

4 hours total will Dell support to get this motherboard because of zip+4. They kept telling me that the info had to match before they could ship.

What a rip.

Oh crap! I didn't include the extra last 4 zip code digits in my request form for the above link. I bet Dell will hold that against me and I won't get the disks.

I just got an email from Dell confirming my request for the OS CD. They said they will send another email once the order is processed. They gave me an order tracking number.

They act like they are doing you a favour. Why weren't they provided with the PC? Better yet, why did they stop giving a bona-fide Windows CD (just to save a few bucks from Microsoft)

I no longer recommend Dell to anyone, for anything. Their systems have gotten crappy and their support is starting to suck too.

One guy who went through Hell with one of those stupid mini tower media center PCs finally got a technician to come as promised, to replace a hard disk under warranty that I diagnosed as failed. The technician didn't say two words... he installed the (preloaded) hard disk and rudely walked out the door, ignoring the man's questions and leaving him to fend for himself and to call me again. Not even correct drivers installed in the image! Is that what he paid an additional $150 for?

Go to Hell, Dell.

I agree. I was being feciscious when I stated 'this is great'. You may recall when I had to put a new hard disk into my Dell desktop, the drivers were missing on the resource disk. Thank goodness prior to swapping out the hard disks, I downloaded all the updated drivers and put them onto a usb thumb drive.

I am done with Dell.

I had to go back home and download drivers from Dell, because the NIC wasn't even recognized.

Yes, I do recall that now that you mention it.

Many Window users rags on Macs and visa versa. A couple of months ago, I was at Best Buy and happened to see a Mac model on display. I was surprised to see that they had become an authorized seller so I stood there looking at it and a Mac guy came over and asked me if i was interested in buying a Mac. I told him that I've been a windows user for several years and was a bit skeptical of Macs.

After 30 minutes of talking with him and some demonstrations, I was thorougly impressed. The colors of the photos were much more vibrant & rich and noticed it retained the high quality regardless of the zoom setting. Not to mention some of the features blow Vista out of the water - Vista's Flip3D is OK, but when you compare it to the Mac - I think it's much easier to move between certain windows. Also moving between applications is pretty much seamless.

I looked around to see where the tower was and the guy told me 'you're lookin at it'. Everything was encased within the large monitor. I touched the back of the case to see how hot it was running and it wasn't even lukewarm. Very impressive.

Compared to the Vista PC that was next to it - I think the Mac had much more to offer. I can't remember the exact price now, but it was around $1,600 - $1,800 which is pretty much what a mid-high level PC would cost anyways.

Where's the fun in having a computer that "just works"?

I don't think many of the regulars of this forum would be happy without the "hobby" of tweaking, upgrading, building, and, yes, repairing their personal computers, whether they're running Windows or some other non-Mac OS.
