If you are using the trial version of TrojanHunter, use LiveUpdate after installation and then manually update after a few days (once a week or more is recommended).

I am curious.. i found TrojanHunter on a list of programs to avoid since they install "bugs" on your computer. Am I wrong to think that?
What are the latest and greatest programs that I should be using now?

but thats why I come here since it is so confusing out there. I trust you guys... and my friend has a really messed up computer and spyware that he is unable to remove.

You'll find out, but it's not free. I use it and guess it's doing its work but I never get any warnings. Probably because I don't go to those nasty places.
