"I Just Had To Install IE 7..Now..."

Now I get explorer.exe has caused a problem and needs to restart or whatever that standard message is. I can't access my computer..I click on it and I get the explorer error. I click on my shortcuts on desktop for my C and D drives and same thing. I can't even get to control panel to remove that GD IE7 I loaded JV 17 Power Tools as I remembered that it has a add/remove section but IE 7 is not listed. What is it called?? Am I looking at a freekin format/reinstall now? I am so GD mad right now....I knew better to do this and I just had to see this. I disable system restore so thats not an option. Maybe removing this will fix this problem. It's the only thing I have done. I can, however access my programs...Just nothing in windows.I'm in safe mode now and still can't access my drives or windows stuff. Heelp.

That was a close one..I found the entry in JV 16..Must be blind...Anyway I removed IE7..Guess what..No more explorer.exe errors....Yes I had nothing at all running in the background when I installed.....Thats enough of Microsoft for me. Long live FireFox. I must be on glue or something for trying that garbage.

LOL,almost spit my rootbeer all over the screen, hehe! Glad it turned out ok. Don't you have an image of your drive? We're all curious & without trying stuff out we won't learn much but we should take precautions before attempting stunts like that. I got a board>drive>psu> all laid out in my work shop especially for new apps it's not worth the hassle of re-installing with all the stuff you risk losing if you got no image software. Imagine the people who are getting it threw AU & probably installing it without knowing. Boy some are going to be very angry indeed.

I've put it on 2 PCs that are very stable but have one that is kind of flaky. I envision something exactly like you had if I do. But, it might straighten out the troubles. Since I've got the auto Ghost on it, I guess I might as well go ahead and take the plunge before anything is done after the image has run.

Jeff, indeed that was funny. I'm sorry you had the problem though. This is a poster child of an example of what's wrong with entangling Internet Explorer in with the Windows Shell.

Thank God you posted your sad story!

I have IE7 downloaded and sitting there ready to install. I was waiting to read a bit more about it first but my curiosity almost got the better of me today. Luckily I got distracted and left it alone and then saw your post before the bug bit me again.

Glad you got out of the mess and back to normal.

I had IE 7 installed had no major problems with it except the icons for favorites did not transfer over. Also changing them in properties did not work. The change showed correctly but would not take effect. I did like the anti-phishing feature in IE7 I uninstalled went back to IE6. I also use Fire Fox 2.0. If you use star docks web blinds you must disable it as a add on in IE6 before installing IE7 or IE7 will not work

If you were expecting they were automatically going to transfer over - no they do not. Those icons are in your cache folder and everytime you empty your cache folder, the icons get deleted along it. If you want to keep your IE fav icons permanent, you should save them to a directory OTHER than your TIF folder and then change the path through the properties menu.

Some said when they installed IE& their icons for favorites transfered over. I tried changing them using Fav Org it again changes the icons but is not reflected in favorites.

They are in my Favorites. I have IE 7 and FavOrg on all my computers. FavOrg works perfectly with IE 7.

Download a fresh copy, close down all running programs, and reinstall it.

The most likely reason for a problem is a bad download, or a conflict while installing it. The above takes care of both.

Millions of copies have already been installed, in a few weeks, over 300 million will have been installed world wide.

I have learned over the years that most of the problems I have encountered were self inflicted. It is not Microsofts fault every time something fails to install or work.

Hello.

Could it be that a plug-in that he installed on IE6 is not compatible with IE7 ?

So if he uninstalls that non-compatible plug-in or whatever before IE7 installation, his problem may go away.

I didn;t have any pluginns on IE6....Didn't know there were any..but then I don't use it. I did as stated shut down all programs when I installed 1st time. Next time I would do it from safe mode. I wasn't blaming Microsoft either. In all fairness thou for all the ones here that installed it with no problems..There are many that have had some kind of problem too. I have read about many disasters with it from many sites I visit. Again I'm not a Microsoft basher...I was just reporting my experience. I still think FireFox is a better browser. Take care all.

Hello.

Sometimes plug-ins are installed without our much attention.

I have also heard that WB5 ( Stardock's Windowblinds 5 ) has problems with IE7 installation.

I have WB5 but it was unloaded at time of IE7 installation. Or else I might have run into trouble because at the time of IE7 installation I was unaware of the incompatibility of WB5 with IE7.

After IE7 installed smoothly, I loaded WB5 and it runs perfectly.

I mean, these sorts of things always happen.

It is WEB Blinds (no Longer supported by Star Dock) that has a problem with IE7 If you have it installed as as a ADD on you must disable it the manage add-ons before upgrading or IE7 will not open. I disabled the ADD on and uninstalled WEB BLINDS a skin program for MSIE.

Window Blinds works well with IE7 as it skins the OS

Thanks for the correction. I do not know anything about Webblinds. Therefore, I misinterpreted it to be WindowBlinds, assuming you had misspelled it. But it was me who was wrong.

The Icon I get for all my urls in favorites is found in the following System32\shell32 it is the first icon, and it will not change even though it will show changed when I select different icon in properties. It just reverts back to the first Icons

I'm not sure of the origin, saw it somewhere referenced in the forum I think, But it's a script that sets the max at 12000. I'll upload it here as a text file, (change the ext from .txt to .vbs). i know the immediate result was that on a reboot my desktop icons come up immediately rather than one by one.

http://www.pcqanda.com/dc/user_files2/18503.txt

It's there but I don't know how to open it. Some guru needs to help on that.I'll try it again as a .zip. That should work better.

Maybe, but I have my favorites stored on a separate partition & folder from my OS so that could have been why some of my icons didn't transfer over.

Yep, no problems here ... and there are many many "happy" customers who say the same.

Me, I haven't a clue how to find anything and only use it if I have to visit WUS.

I am also waiting for "patch Tuesday" for some extra visitors to the forums.

I just downloaded a new copy of IE7 from Microsoft site and installed it in safe mode. Install went ok and when machine came back up it was the same thing. Can't access my hard drive or anything in explorer. Says explorer encountered a problem and has to shut down. I uninstalled IE7 and all is well again. I have no idea what is wrong.

It must be something unique to your machine as I have installed it on about 5 different machines, all without a hitch.

I am well aware of that. Again.....This is what happens when I installed IE7.....After it is installed if I click on "My Computer" icon or if I click on my icon's on the desktop that say "C" Drive or "D"(Shortcuts) Drive they will not open and I get that message that Explorer,Not Internet Explorer, has encountered a problem and will close message. If I try to go to Start..Settings...Control Panel..You can't and I get the same explorer error. I remove IE7 and all is well again. So that is causing my Explorer not to open my drives and such and give that error. If anyone hears of anyone having this problem around the net and a fix I would appreciate knowing how they fixed it or what was causing this. I also believe it is something isolated to my machine, whatever that could be. Thanks.

Quoting Grogan in post #5 "Jeff, indeed that was funny. I'm sorry you had the problem though. This is a poster child of an example of what's wrong with entangling Internet Explorer in with the Windows Shell."

I'll probably have to wait for Grogan to explain this but with the word "entangling" he must mean there is a connection???

Our Mr Grogan could put it little more colourfully but in essence ... IE & Explorer are part and parcel of Windows ... you'd have a pig-in-poke of a job "un-installing" IE ... not actually sure if it is even possible.

It then goes without saying that IE updates, can, on certain systems, cause a whole host of err, problems.

>Windows Explorer, and Internet Explorer, are two different
>things that have nothing to do with each other.

They actually have a lot to do with each other. What is different is that Internet Explorer is a separate program (very small... it exists to load the dlls and stuff that make up the application) that is launched, but it's all the same machinery.

The application "Windows Explorer" (the file manager) which is what gets launched if the user executes explorer.exe while the Windows Shell (also explorer.exe) is running, is also only one facet of it.

So basically, installing/upgrading Internet Explorer replaces components that make up the Windows shell. Critical components of your user interface. It's more than just an application.

It is good, because it allows a lot of the framework to be shared. It's bad, because when it gets broken you're crippled.

I'm clarifying for Dave here too.

Grogan

IE 7 installed for me with no problems so far except for one that I discovered related to my HP All-in-One. It has an icon for the HP directory. This directory allows for scanning, copying, faxing, etc. After loading IE 7 this program would not come up as usual when I double clicked on the icon. HP tech service informed me that they were working on the problem but had not solved it to date. A work around is to: Double click the HP icon, then press alt+shift, then click twice (not double click) on the minimize option that appears, then double click on the HP icon again and the program will open.

I have no idea and neither did anyone else. I installed IE7 from a clean install so no 3rd party programs were installed at this point so there is no way to know what it was. Probably a damaged OS somewhere.

Just a quick final note on this issue. After reading all the posts I decided to follow ALL the advice and installed my download of IE7. Guess What!!!!! All appeared to go well but when I launched IE7 I was presented with a frozen screen and absolutely nothing else. I couldn't even use normal shutdown procedures. After a forced shutdown and reboot I got the same result so I took the easy way out and uninstalled IE7 and am now back with IE6 SP2.

I have no idea why. I had all running programs closed and definitely no plugins installed in IE6. I run a clean system and have no other issues. Everything is fully patched and no spyware/viruses have been detected.

I am glad you got a result after your reinstall of Windows but I don't think I am quite up to that challenge. Stuck here in the wilds of rural Australia I am all on my own if things go wrong again.

I might rethink the situation after the next batch of MS patches when I normally do a disk image. I'll do a fresh download of IE7 (as Shelley recommends) then and have another go just to try to get the security which IE7 provides. I use Firefox as my default browser so I will just keep on keeping on with that until I sort it out.

The thing that irks me is that friends (and even my son) who do absolutely no maintenance and just let things happen have had no problems! I think Murphy's Law is stalking me!

Since I installed IE7, my PC takes a very long time to shut down. I've had other bizarre annoyances that may or may not be related as well.

Laurie, if you have an image made of XP before the installation, I would start over. I installed IE 7.0 recently and it all went very smoothly. There were 2 small minor annoyances after the installation, one was that it seemed to suck up more memory than v6.0 and in my opinion, was NOT any faster than v6.0. In fact it was a tad bit slower on my system. I have 384 MB SD RAM (PC 133) so it's not a lot, but it's not paltry by any means either. Firefox is my primary browser so I didn't care either way - I did it just to try it out and see what the big hoopla was about. Turns out the "big hoopla" was nothing.

While this is an improvement for Microsoft, I suspect there's goign to be many many versions for v7.0 (and hopefully improvements) coming down the pike.

The only thing I could do is use Windows system restore. I made a restore point right before installing IE7. I don't use an imaging or ghosting program.

I don't use the system restore feature, so I can't comment on that, but you should be able to uninstall IE v7 from the Add/Remove applet in the Control Panel. I don't know what is the best way to uninstall v7 and go back to v6 - I used True Image to restore my XP back to a prior point.

By the way, Acronis True Image was offering a free download of version 7 about a month ago. I don't think it's being offered anymore, but I downloaded a copy back then. After using Acronis True Image now for a few years - I wouldn't be without some sort of an imaging program.

I suspect that most of the people reporting problems with IE 7 have bastardized their Windows or IE installation to the point that that the upgrade runs into unexpected conflicts.

Too many of us add all kinds of third party bells and whistles to Windows, many from questionable sources. We customize our systems for no better reason than we can, and then start wondering after a while why Gates' damn program runs lousy.

As Pogo famously stated, "We have met the enemy, and it is us!"

Hope you aren't correct Shelley. I am so careful not to install any programs which aren't discussed at length on this Forum and I have not customised my system beyond the most basic adjustments (ie startup items etc.)I don't install toolbars or any of that rubbish and always patch fully. The only other real trouble I had was the "loop" which several others had with Windows Defender updates very early in the piece - and of course Norton but that was 3 years ago. Since then everything has been smooth sailing.

I am not bashing Microsoft and there is obviously something different on this PC which IE7 did not like and perhaps if I keep reading what others have done about their problems I will suddenly come up with some ideas to help with my little glitch.

That is why this Forum is of such great value to people like me. The experience of others is available to all. Long may it continue!

I also run a clean machine with security programs to the hilt and FireFox browser and I still got damaged some how. I run like 7 anti spyware programs(As scanners only) and Nod32 antivirus. They rarely find anything, maybe a cookie once in awhile. I also run MVPS host file. It's like the Kennedy assasination...We'll really never know for sure who/what did it.

Thanks for your response, Shelly.

I turned off real time protection in Windows Defender and any other program which had real time protection enabled. Perhaps that was not enough and I should have closed the program completely. I'll do that next time I try the install.

Obviously something interfered with the process. The fact that Uffbros had success after a clean reinstall of Windows is a pretty good indication of that.

Better luck next time with a fresh download of IE7 I hope.

I did not shut down Windows Defender when I installed version 7.0 - it still went smoothly for me.

My approach is simple, I run End It All before installing any software that works at the Windows Sysyem level. I do not have problems. You will have to reboot anyway, so why not play it safe and close everything.

Thanks for the input.

I'll bite the bullet and tackle it again after the next lot of patches.

My son tells me he just turned off his firewall and antivirus, installed the thing and he was up and away. ("Good God, Mum, it's only a Browser"). He's a Systems Engineer and not afraid of the consequences. Doesn't expect any problems so doesn't get any! Not at all like his mother who reads everything and weighs up all the opinions first and then puts a toe into the water very gingerly!

Anyway, when all is said and done it IS only a Browser and it will be successfully installed next time!

Not to give you the wrong impression, because IE7 is far more functional compared to IE6, but ...

Thanks for the link back to that earlier thread. I did read that and remember the comments made by the posters and especially what Grogan had to say about IE7.

I think my offspring made that throwaway comment to me more in the nature of a encouragement - trying to reassure me that all would be well!

I love Firefox and that will be my default browser regardless of the outcome. If it wasn't for the security aspects of upgrading to IE7 I wouldn't bother with another attempt.

Everyone else seems to be OK with it so I'll just lag behind for a while.

Cheers

Elcee
