"? How to Load HDD in Old IBM Aptiva?"

Any ideas how to install a HDD in IBM Aptiva 2176 ?

BIOS doesn't see it as installed and has no option to manually enter the size/cylinder heads etc.

When I click out of BIOS I get a graphic on screen indicating to load a floppy and press F1 .... ????

I hate these old computers but just trying to help someone get it up for the kids.

Jim.

What brand of hard drive are you trying to get the bios to recognize?

Post the model no. of the computer.

Edit: I'm sorry, you already did that.

Probably won't get it to see more than 8 gigs if I remember right.

You may be able to get a BIOS update from IBM which will allow you to overcome the drive size barrier, but if not, I would avoid using drive overlay software. Too many problems asscociated with that route.

The HDD that is in it is 1.6gig and I have a Quantum 6 gig to replace it so no worry as IBM for that model does allow 8gig...

But I can't find any info on how to have it recognize as installed?? Or BIOS updates.

I hate these old machines

Jim.

Number of possibilities noted in the first link.

Deskstar 5 EIDE hard disk drive - Overview

Maximum hard disk drive size matrix - Aptiva

IBM: aptiva 2176

Aptiva - 2134/2176 Diagnostics - Index of symptoms, messages, error codes, and beeps

I still wonder what brand of hard drive the 1.6 gig is. If it's a WD, could be something as simple as a fouled up jumper.
