It depends on how paranoid worried you are about security.

I don't run it.....Though with today's computers i doubt it will affect the speed much and sure why not run it...

Yes. Absolutely YES. Zone Alarm, Sygate Personal Firewall (discontinued but still available and still good), or whatever you choose. Plus an Anti-virus program of your choosing. And use Spyware Blaster, too. But heed this: Use only ONE AV program, and only ONE software firewall program.
