"Registry Tweak doesn't work."

I really liked the CD Player that came with W2K - very light on the resources and nice interface. I now use XP, so I copied the application onto my XP partition. I'm trying to make it the default for playing CD players but the registry tweak I made isn't working for some reason. The player opens up fine when I double click on the shortcut, but it doesn't auto-play when I pop in a music CD.

These are the 3 changes I made thus far:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cda\OpenWithList\
Added a subkey for 'CDPlayer.exe'

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cdafile\shell\play\command
Changed the default value to: %SystemRoot%\system32\CDPlayer.exe

When this didn't work, I added a subkey 'CDPlayer.exe' under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications

Still no joy. What did I miss?

Hello.

Please undo the registry tweaks you have just made and open Control Panel then Folder Options.

Click File Types tab and choose CDA as the file type.

Then click Change Program. Then you can point to your new CD player program. You can set it as your default program for music CDs.

Hope the above helps.

Regards

Thanks - I already know about that method.

What i'm trying to do is make the registry tweak work and in the process improve my knowledge of the registry.

Where you changed the default for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cdafile\shell\play\command, you almost certainly have to put a file placeholder like "%L" as an argument after the exe file and you may also need to enter a command line switch like /play.

Steve, I must be missing something because I just tried that and it still doesn't work.

Here's the value for that subkey:

%systemroot%\system32\CDPlayer.exe "%L", /Play

I tried placing the 'play' switch before & after the %L argument and still no luck.

Here's what pops up when I insert a CD in the CD-ROM.

I used to have Creative Media Player as the default player for my CDs, and I made sure to uncheck the cda file association. (per screenshot).

Sorry, can't answer the question directly. But if you just want to improve your knowledge, then do it the standard way and monitor the registry changes with a program like Regshot:

Thanks Lupham. I'm just so baffled as to why the tweak is not working, especially after the advice given by SteveY, I was 100% sure his correction would take affect. I'll wait to see if he has another suggestion before I try that freeware.

Hello.

Perhaps you should change the settings in Program Defaults and Options under Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel from Default WMP to other media player, whether it be again an MS media player.

Now thats a thought.
But how do you go about making a particular media player as the default?
IE, how do you get the other program to show up on the Set Program Access and Default selection list?

Hello.

I am sorry if I misled you.

I have WinDVD program and it is the defaulf DVD program that opens when a DVD is inserted.

When I have searched for Windvd.exe, I have come upon many entries. Some of the entries contained "%1" value.

Therefore, you might also have to care for this "%1" entry, I guess.

EX: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Windvd.exe\Shell\Open\command

Value: REG_SZ "C:\Program Files\....\Windvd.exe""%1"

And for WMPlayer, it is /OPen "%L%"

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\wmplayer.exe\Shell\Open\command

C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe /Open "%L"

Regards

FWIW, I set Media Player Classic to be my default player for 'CD Audio Tracks, .cda'. Tracking that change, with regshot, yielded this:

Ok, so I did that!?

But doing so, accomplished nothing.

Inserting a CD just brought up the dialog box you received in #4, above.

Though I did notice a difference between the 'AutoPlay' & 'Play' commands.

Play immediately starts WMP (not MPC!) & plays the CD.
AutoPlay brings up the dialog box (without, again MPC listed).

Unselecting MPC:

Yet another failure.

This time with an older, small, CD (only) player (from 2002).

CDrun

Under Win98 CD's did automatically open up in it - if I recall correctly.

So I'm thinking that the procedure needed to change the application to use, & the registry entries needed are different.

Anyhow, I'm attaching a text listing of the install process (this time with the PCMag utility, InCtrl).
