I really liked the CD Player that came with W2K - very light on the resources and nice interface. I now use XP, so I copied the application onto my XP partition. I'm trying to make it the default for playing CD players but the registry tweak I made isn't working for some reason. The player opens up fine when I double click on the shortcut, but it doesn't auto-play when I pop in a music CD.
These are the 3 changes I made thus far: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cda\OpenWithList\ Added a subkey for 'CDPlayer.exe'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cdafile\shell\play\command Changed the default value to: %SystemRoot%\system32\CDPlayer.exe
When this didn't work, I added a subkey 'CDPlayer.exe' under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications
Where you changed the default for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cdafile\shell\play\command, you almost certainly have to put a file placeholder like "%L" as an argument after the exe file and you may also need to enter a command line switch like /play.
Sorry, can't answer the question directly. But if you just want to improve your knowledge, then do it the standard way and monitor the registry changes with a program like Regshot:
#7. "RE: Registry Tweak doesn't work." In response to lupham (Reply # 6)
Thanks Lupham. I'm just so baffled as to why the tweak is not working, especially after the advice given by SteveY, I was 100% sure his correction would take affect. I'll wait to see if he has another suggestion before I try that freeware.
Perhaps you should change the settings in Program Defaults and Options under Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel from Default WMP to other media player, whether it be again an MS media player.
Now thats a thought. But how do you go about making a particular media player as the default? IE, how do you get the other program to show up on the Set Program Access and Default selection list?
