I have 2 issues that have been puzzling me for some time and don't recall that it was ever posted here. I maybe mistaken, though.
My ZoneAlarm does not seem to remember what I ask it to remember regarding certain program wanting to acess the inernet. It keeps asking me whether to let this program access the Internet. I also check the box to remember the answer. Still it does not. What is that?
Frequently it asks me: Do you want to let this program serves as a Server? What does that mean? I always say no, not knowing any difference.
I used to use the Pro version and on the second PC I just use the regular free version. I loaded the free ZA last night and all day it was asking for my approval even I already approved last night.
1. Mozilla Firefox. Even though I've allowed it Internet Access in both zones and denied any server rights (red X's), everytime I start the browser it asks me for server rights.
2. Microsoft Windows Media Configuration Utility. I've blocked everything (4 X's), yet it always asks me for Internet Access.
>Thanks Allyn. >Will do that. Any suggestion as to whether to allow a >program to "serve as a server"? What is the meaning of >that? > > ----------------------------------------- That depends upon the type of program,if you use any VPN proggies then yes.
Acting as a server means that a prograam will be allowed to send data from your system. Some programs have to do that to function, but use caution, it could be spyware or a trojan.
Thanks, Shelly and Joe. At least I know now that it is not a fatal mistake to let a program be a server, because I do recognize all of them. Just that I don't know the function of a server, and Shelly correctly identified my concern and gave the answer I am looking for. Thanks.
I have a similar issue with free ZA on my Win 2K computer. After a reboot, ZA randomly "forgets" what permissions I've given to programs. Also, the first time after a reboot when some programs try to access the net (to check for updates, for example), ZA will pop up the warning that "a changed program is trying to access the internet." Again, this is seemingly random and not always the same programs. And after some reboots it doesn't happen at all.
