"NSW 2005 Programs Menu"
Sat Jan-22-05 03:35 PM by _Chewy_

I recently uninstalled PC-Cillan internet security suite and installed NSW 2005. At first everything seemed to be OK, but I soon got the following error when I opened up Outlook.

Totally had me puzzled as I had never seen that error message in all the time I've been using NSW products. A google search led me to a discovery that moving the Norton program under in the Start menu was the culprit. I have a separate folder that I've named under Programs > 'Security' that I place such programs in. For some reason with the 2005 version (not sure about 2004), if you move the Norton programs folder in the start menu, you will get this message and the only fix is to edit the registry which I hate doing manually. If anyone needs the fix, I'll post the directions.

Personally, I think it's horrible that they almost force you to place it in the default Programs shortcut folder. Why? for what purpose? I don't mind the product activation as I understand companies need to fight s/w piracy. But when a company forces me to install simple shorts to the default programs menu, I really makes me question what their motives are.

Glad you found the fix. I have never seen that error message, as I always go with installation defaults.

I think you can put a shortcut anywhere you want. It's just the base listing that is expected to be in a specific place.

At least it is easy enough to find the solution. Crazy isn't it that they put such a restriction in. (But hey, NAV is the AV program, & of course they set the standards.)

Message: "Norton AntiVirus 2005 does not support the repair feature. Please uninstall and reinstall."

Solution 1: Restore the Windows Start menu entry for Norton AntiVirus
This message can happen if you have changed the default location for the Norton AntiVirus shortcuts in the Windows Start Menu. The default locations of the shortcuts are:

* In the stand-alone version of Norton AntiVirus:
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton AntiVirus

* In Norton AntiVirus installed as part of Norton Internet Security:
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus

* In Norton AntiVirus installed as part of Norton SystemWorks:
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks Premier\Norton AntiVirus

If you have moved the shortcuts from the default location, then move them back to their original location to fix the problem.

(Some standards were made to be broken.)

Yes, you're right. I worded that incorrectly in my original posting.

The registry edit is a simple one. But as w/ any registry edits, backup the registry if you are at all unsure how to do this.

The following fix was posted on a forum called "Castlecops" here:

http://computercops.biz/forums.html

=================================================================
Open up the registry and drill down to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData

Highlight the UserData key by clicking it once and press CTRL+F, search for "Programs\Norton" without the quotes. When it returns the search results, double click to modify the data and type in the new path. In my case it was:

F:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Security

Press F3 to keep searching and make this change for all the keys found. Reboot and the problem will be fixed.
