"Cleaner Solvent Needed" Fri Oct-15-04 05:09 PM by _Chewy_
I have an older Win98 PC that was given to me. I don't need this PC, my plan is to clean it up (physically & software-wise) and donate it to a needy kid in the inner city who could really use it.
When I opened up the case, the inside was so filthy it took me a while to clean it. However, the dust and filth has accumulated on the RAM modules so badly that I don't know what to use on it. I thought about taking some rubbing alcohol and diluting it but I want to make sure it will not harm the components. (Using the diluted form (with water) seemed to be a dangerous proposition in itself).
What is the best solvent/liquid to clean PC components? And where can I buy it?
I consider fluids not a good idea with PC's because you're never sure when they are fully dry or whether they will eat away at components. I use a air compressor set at 20-30 psi & blow the entire innards clean once a year.

That is not an option in this case.
Like I said above, the dust or the filth (whatever you wanna call it) has literally caked onto the surface. I need to wipe it off with something but I am not sure what to use.

Remove the DIMM's and clean them with at least 90% pure alcohol, but do not dilute it with water or anything else. Be sure to unplug the power from the computer before removing or installing memory, there is always 5 volts on the DIMM sockets even if the computer is turned off. Let the modules dry thoroughly (and sober up) before reinstalling them, it won't take long for the alcohol to evaporate. Be sure to discharge your body of static electric charges while handling Memory.
