"Merging Partitions"
Fri Oct-01-04 08:59 PM by _Chewy_

I've got a hard drive with 5 partitions. The primary (c:\) has Win98 loaded with D:\partition loaded with some games.

I'm going to use PM to merge C & D which I've done before, no problem there. But what happens after I merge the two? I know that currently all the shortcuts are pointing to the D: partition so I'll have to manually edit those to point to C: after the merge.

But is there anything in the registry that I'll need to edit as well?

The longer version of this story is that I've been dualbooting with W98 and W2K on two separate HDDs. There was something wrong w/ the 2nd one (this was loaded with W2K) so Maxtor agreed to replace it since it was within the warranty period.

I've decided that when I get the replacement drive here, i'm going to load both 98 and W2K on the large one since there's more than plenty of room for it. I got a Norton Ghost image I can use to restore a fresh install image onto the replacement drive once it arrives. I'm going to make one large FAT32 partition as my C:\primary -- big enough to install both the OS and the games. That's why I'm merging my two partitions.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you need Win98?

As compete says, why do want 98.

W2000k is a very good OS.

Yes, you can merge the 2 partitions with PM.
Yes, you'll have to change references to D: and E: and F: and any other partitions and drives, and CD and DVD.

Just keep 2000 on the main Primary partition and leave them as they are. But, if you want to go ahead, you'll have to change the reg. links.

Best Regards
Ian

When I used PM8 to merge, I seem to remember that it said it was adjusting or repairing location references, so it might be that you won't have to worry about it if you use that.

Unlike with XP, there are many programs that will not work in W2K. The question should be why do you want W2K and W98, whem XP will replace both?

I concur. While Win2K has been a very good OS in my experience, I still run into programs which will not run properly under it. For this and many other reasons, rather than retrograding to Win98SE, I look forward to installing my new WinXP Pro (OEM w/ SP1) in the next week or so. Yay!

Partition Magic has a utility called MagicMover, which is what you need to use to move programs to a different partition. Use that first before merging the partitions. Takes care of all of the Registry changes needed. It'll only work if the programs are being moved to a partition that the OS it was installed on can use. For instance, if you installed a program in a dual boot situation such as Win98 and Win2000 as a Win98 program, then it has stay on the Win98 side of things.

JP. I don't think that Magic Mover has been in PM for at least the last two versions. It sure isn't in my PM8,
