Thanks for the news flash on Ad-aware!

Installation questions:

1) Is this supposed to REPLACE (overwrite) the current free version?
2) Should the current installed version be uninstalled first?

Yes, do uninstall the old. Based on the following from the Lavasoft forum, an uninstaller is built into the Ad-Aware SE setup file.

From Lavasoft forums topic:

..Ad-Aware SE may not function correctly if old versions are not removed prior to installing a new version or an upgrade. To ensure proper installation and operation of Ad-Aware SE please make sure "Yes, uninstall previous version of Ad-Aware. (Recommended)" is selected and click "Next" to continue.

I downloaded and installed the new version: YES, the free version is included in the improvements. When you go to install the new version it detects the old version and asks you if you want to remove it. I played it safe and uninstalled the old version before even downloading the new. Good luck.

Downloaded, installed, ran scan. Found 110 new tracking cookies, all in IE Cache. Scanned about 30,000 more files than the old version. I had just run a scan earlier today with the old version, so most of the 110 that the new version found were undiscovered by the earlier version.

Doesn't VX2 Cleaner show-up in plugins anymore ? I have it installed and it's in programs Plugin folder . But it doesn't show in AdAware SE Add-ons (should show in Tools ? , I would expect ) TY
I just checked in Add/Remove and it's for AdAware 6 ! so maybe it's not for this version ? Uninstall then ??

I uninstalled (or tried to ) it's gone from the Plugins folder , but hanging on in Add/Remove , giving this error !

I haven't verified this, but after what Aaron said about expanding the capabilities with Ad-Aware SE, I suspect the VX2 plug-in is either not ready or is no longer required for SE.

EDIT: Regarding the uninstall error, it's because you uninstalled Ad-Aware before uninstalling the Plug-in. Don't feel bad; I made the same mistake!

Back up the registry first, then navigate to the following key and delete it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\VX2 Cleaner plug-in for Ad-aware 6

That should resolve the error.

The Plug-Ins are now called Add Ons. If you read the Help in Adaware about Add-ons, it'll provide a link right to the Plug-Ins page where you download and install them into the new version. They look like they haven't changed.

I followed the destructions in the Help file, downloaded the VX2 plugin, installed it, but it doesn't show up in the "Addons" section as it should. However, the page I was taken to says that the plugins are for Ad-aware 6 and not the Personal. So perhaps they aren't compatible??

Yes, the plug-ins are for version 6, and that's where the help in the new version points to. Either you had a problem, or Lavasoft did. I'll see what happens here in a few when I try to install a plug-in.

Well, Buggers! Tried installing a couple of the plug-ins and they didn't take. I did notice that they wanted to go into the default plug-in folder and that line was blank in the installer. Tried putting them in the AdAware folder, but they didn't show up when I ran it again.

I had to go into the Lavasoft Folder and delete Adaware6 it was still there and that is where the plugins were going. Guess I wasn't watching the install closely. It still didn't work there is a red X on the plugin in the add-in folder of LE. I'm giving up until I see it is resolved. Download page mentions the old version not the new version.

I tried uninstalling and got an error so I just downloaded and ran the one I got from your link and it has a red X also. Deleted the plugin folder and reinstalled. Still redX. Had to go into the Lavasoft Folder Plugins and uninstall it from there since Windows couldn't find the install log. Then went into the Add/Remove and could then remove it there. Whew!! I guess I'll wait. Thanks for trying I'll figure it out. Luckily I haven't needed them just wanted them.

Thank you for the links to those Plug-Ins for SE.
I just downloaded and installed AdAware SE, Version 1.02, then the plug-ins.
Everything worked like a charm, thanks to all the posters in this thread. Thanks again!

Just some quick notes.
I installed this on my brother's computer.
Terminology may be wrong (I no longer have it to look at).
And I did not really review the program, just installed & ran.

When I find malware, I typlically append .VIR to it & leave it there.

SE found two of these .VIR files, where v6 did not. That's good.

SE found HKCU/soft/ms/ie/toolbar/webbrowser, whatever that is & whatever it does? I deleted that.

SE found /windows/hosts/, thought the hosts file in use was totally benign.
I can see someone deleting there hosts file just because it was listed by SE.

about:blank still shows up as possible malware (even when it is not).

When reviewing the details of items found, mouseover used to display the full detail message, SE does not. Even with the mouseover it was difficult to extract the full message. And now it is even more so.

The scan log is a bit more beneficial, but still not so good.

TAC pages would seem to only open in Internet Explorer.
They should open in the default browser.

The menu 'icons' at the top right of the program are not that obvious that they are in fact clickable & perform functions.

Has anybody had any problems with either OE or MS Outlook since installing and running this version? I have found that since cleaning what was found when I did the scan that neither of these mail clients will now connect to check for new emails. It is possible that both mail host are down but I don't think that is the problem.

All the items that I found did not look like anything that would cause anything like this.

Still getting my mail in Outlook 2002. Didn't see any objects that AdAware had selected for removal that looked like they had anything to do with the email.

AdAware SE finds Jason's ScriptSentry, as did AdAware 6. Don't remove it - place it into the Ignore List.

Category:Vulnerability
Object Type:RegData
Size:41 Bytes
Location:regfile\shell\open\command "" (d:\scriptsentry\scriptsentry.exe "%1" %*)
Last Activity:8-9-2004
Risk Level:Low
TAC index:3

That's strange, because no version of Ad Aware has ever listed my Script Sentry as malware.

Maybe it just happens with Win98. I posted about this quite some time back in an AdAware 6 thread but nobody replied to it indicating they had a similar situation. Both quarantining or removing this entry resulted in ScriptSentry failing to function. If I remember correctly, ScriptSentry sent up a popup notice.

Some individuals reported that Spybot found this entry also: SpyBot is picking up something.

Got the new one installed...is very different.
BUT...it isn't listed in my section where I have other programs listed...not referring to the Add/Remove section...see attachment.
Any idea how I get it in there like the others?

Once you find it, left click, hold, and drag it where you want it. If an AdAware shortcut icon was placed on the desktop, right click it, select copy, then go to the desired location and paste it there.

That's a weird way of doing that...all the others I was able to use the inner 'advanced' section of 'Task'...then place it in the Utilities section...this is the 1st time that this didn't even go that way...will try what you suggest...I do have the desktop icon...*fingers crossed*

Well...I got it there...but it didn't work at all...the program, I mean! I uninstalled the entire thing...re-d/led it...I wish it would just do what the other programs would do...ask if I wanted it in my start programs, etc...as mentioned previously.
Nevermind...THAT will be the only program that I CAN'T get listed there and work w/o problems. I will just forget about listing it there. At least I have the desktop icon as reference...and why doesn't it have an uninstall function??? The OLD version did.

ilona53, it does have an uninstall exe. I just used it, because I went back to the old Ad-Aware.

Like SpywareBlaster, I can't do updates on this either. It tells me to connect to the internet. I'm on cable, for gosh sakes.

Oh well, I'll just use the old one until I get it figured out. Hauxfan!

The uninstall is in the Add/Remove in Control Panel...but I liked the OLD version better, where it actually showed you the 'uninstall'. BTW, the OLD version will only be good for 90 days, according to what I have read on Lavasoft Forum.
I just click on the desktop icon to run the program...but I am the type that likes to have things listed (as in that screenshot)...know what I mean? Maybe I just didn't do it correctly or something...never had to do anything like that before (and don't plan on doing it again... *I'm German/redhead/Aries=stubborn* )
I don't even know why I have them listed there ( previous screenshot)...I NEVER go to Start | UTILITIES or MICROSOFT ,etc...I access my programs from the desktop icons. ...maybe a 'neat freak' or something??

The proxy support don't work. I had to manually edit the configuration file in the old version to get it to work, but this version don't work at all.

Well this just sucks! Lavasoft didn't have the proxy support right in the previous version, and it's even more screwed up in this version. The frigging settings file is encrypted and cannot be edited manually. Ad-aware has never saved the proxy settings, and now I can't even set it manually. If a feature is included in software, I expect it to work.
And what's the "Negliligible Objects" crap? Hell, I've got a MRU cleaner...don't want another one. I don't see a setting to disable this "Fearure". Why can't they just leave the program a malware cleaner, instead of adding uneccessary crap. BRB...I'm going to make another donation to SpywareBlaster...

I'm sure they do, but it's too much trouble to register. I already searched, but only found a couple post related to proxy. One was my exact problem, but "check your proxy settings" was the only answer. Well excuse me, but the settings don't work.

Say Darren. As far as the MRU Cleaner goes, to shut that off, just after you Click to Start a Scan, "Uncheck Search for negligible risk entries" . That will stop those MRS's from being detected.

I followed Pilgrims links and successfully installed them.

It can be misleading when you click on the link & the dialogue box comes up.

You select run, then the proggie downloads it, you are presented with more boxes, then again you select run.

It automatically installs the plug-ins and extensions in the correct folders in Ad Aware.

Many thanks Pilgrim.

Best Regards
Ian

see my thread re updated refs...when I close the new SE defs (10.08.2004)...I am having it goback to 09.08.2004! weird! I really don't know what to do...even with the link posted about this problem...maybe d/l from the website again for the new defs? If that is the case...I don't like this method...updating from the program itself - as in the OLD version - was great!

Yes ,it doesn't stick . That update downloads as SE1R2 10.08.2004 . But after I close AdAware SE , the ref file goes back to SE1R1 09.08.2004 !
and the update opens yet another IE window for Lavasoft site .

I believe Lavasoft has just snookered us with the free sample, when you go to update it to 1.02 it pretends to do so, but then sends you to down load and lo and behold you have to purchase it. Ill be saying goodbye to Lavasoft.

Well, you screwed up Hugo, don't blame Lavasoft! Version 102 is as free as ever, I just installed it.

What you probably did was open the program and click on the Information button to see if the version was correct, then you clicked on the OK button without bothering to read that you were OK'ing an offer to update to the paid version

As far as the reference file goes, you gotta have the v1.02 core program for it to stick. AdAware clearly states that on their web site.
