"Computer locking up"
Sat Jun-26-04 11:12 PM by Tony_IA

Hello...I need Help!
I just got high speed internet hooked up yesterday and Im going crazy. Since I got it my computer has been locking up. It locks up even when just browsing a web page, but if it contains flash animation, or if I try to use my media player it locks up instantly. Its not as bad with my media player when offline. I never had this problem with my dial up connection. I have 700.8Mb of memory, Ive only used 10Gb of HDD space of my 40Gb HDD, running an AMD 2400, 400Mhz mobo, I have a ThermalTake CPU cooler so my CPU temps arent high...I have a Cooler Master setup to monitor my temps, and an nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128Mb DDR graphics card so it should be able to handle the video, and I figure it should be able to keep up with everything. I just built this computer last year and have never had any trouble with it. Why would I now be having trouble with everything. And I was getting an error message that said I had an illegal skin for my media player...even though they came with my digital media edition for XP. Since I got high speed internet I average 20 lock ups a day! I also called my provider to have them ping my connection, they it was great. I have a 3Mb connection, I love the speed and I want to be able to enjoy it! Im getting bummed out.

I appreciate all help, thanks.
Tony

I should mention Im running Internet explorer...could be an update or a patch issue? But it was fine 2 days ago with AOL.

Have you applied ALL critical updates from Microsoft? Have you scanned for spyware using Spybot and Ad-aware?

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

I have Spy Bot and a couple others, I use them on a regular basis. But no, i havnt downloaded any critical updates for awhile. The problems didnt start till I got my new connection so I never thought of it. I looked at them but there are alot of critical updates, but for a bunch of strange stuff I dont think I have on my computer...I cant read them very well because most of dont seem like its written in english. I just build computers, I let sombody else to the hard stuff, hehehe. Im not saying getting updates is hard, I just dont understand some of the terms for their use or application. Ill quit talking before I sound like a moron, lol.

Im going to go check the updates again. I just ran an online virus check...came up with 2 items the nothing else has found. One is a HTML dl.html...hmmm? the other said, TROJ MUSS. A mssyse.exe...hmmm? <---thats the stuff I have no idea what Im looking at.

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, I can find a dl.exe but no dl.html, and no mssy.exe in windows. It said they are there, but I cant find them. Oh well, they might not be the problem anyway.

I cant find them. I have 2 trojans in NT / XP services, but cant find anything marked NT/XP anywhere in windows. I have no idea where they are and nothing I use deletes them and some dont even see them. All I gotta do now is find the NT/XP file...grrrr! hehehe

Ton

I got all the updates installed...just to have it lock up again during reboot. Im about ready to go back to dial up!

Thanks for the link but thats one I used that couldnt remove them. It found them but couldnt do anything about it.

I also just tried one of my media players after getting all the updates...instant lock up. But I cant figure out if they were in my computer before yesterday or not, because if they were, thats not my problem. I might just break down and ditch my entire HDD for a new one and get my OS reinstalled so I can have a fresh setup with no downloads. I could use a bigger HDD anyway...or 4, hehe.

Cool program, thanks for the link.

Adaware...0 found
Trojan remover...2 found, couldnt delete
Spy Bot...0 found
Trojan Hunter...36 found, 10 possible found, 36 removed

Nice...very nice
Do you know of a good one to check for viruses? My Norton runs its daily scan, but every time its done scanning and it tries to clean all I get is...DELETE FAILED on every single item found. I think Norton is junk.

Thanks again,
Tony

Norton is hardly "junk", but it, like any security program, must be correctly installed and used. It is foolish to depend on periodic virus scans, you have to run auto Protect in the background at all times. The object is to prevent bad things from getting onto your computer in the first place, not to try and fix things after your computer is screwed up.

No program will help someone who fails to use safe computing practices, does not use preventive actions and programs that are kept up to date.

Best thing to do is use a firewall and run your anti-virus fully updated. I ditched Norton long ago in favour of AVG Grisoft Free Edition & Zone Alarm Free Firewall.

When it comes to update installs just keep on installing them until there are no more left to install.

This helps speed things up: http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

No more new updates, I got em all. My computer just locked up again while trying to create a shortcut on my desktop. So I guess there isnt one particular thing I do that locks me up, seems to be random. I checked for viruses, and the trojans are gone. Its never done this till I got high speed service, I use an ethernet cable wich Ive never used before but I dont think I should have any trouble with that, but its the only thing I can think of for new devices on my computer except for the setup and no software was installed for my new service...so Im stumped.

When all else fails...get a ball bat.

In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" (Other) , and, "Activate install on demand" (Internet Explorer)

Ethernet means you are connected all the time, unless you have "Stop all Internet activity" on your firewall.

More time to trickle down trojans and more time to do a hack attack.

Im not running a LAN card, its plugged into the ethernet plug on my mobo. I just ran a diognostic test on my connection, it says it failed...<00000001> VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter...FAILED. That adapter is the one listed for my internet connection in the control panel under network connections. It says it failed but dont tell me whats wrong or how to fix it. Would it work better to swap my modem for a LAN card and make a connection that way? or would that even be whats causing my problems?

Tony

I just checked it again but expanded the list...it says my IP address failed...hmmm?

Thank God there is someone else who does the same thing!

With all of this spyware removal try re-installing the DUN to renew your winsock.

It might well be that it is damaged.

There is no way defragging a drive can fix anything except slow disk access.

Since there was apparently a message that the network adapter failed. Go to Device Manager and remove the network interface, then reboot and Windows will reinstall it. If the problem still persists, install a Network Interface Card (available for under $10), and disable the on-board network adapter in the BIOS.

I agree with Shelly. If reinstalling the drivers doesn't fix the problem, just get a new network card. I have seen several of the onboard VIA Rhine controllers go bad for no apparent reason.

I dont want to speak to soon...but...as Im sitting here with this web page up, and winmx running, Im on my 3rd song on my media player without any trouble. So I wonder if its a fluke because my test shows my adapter failed again, or if maybe it did work. I guess time will tell...here comes song 4, hehehe.

Im still getting a new network card though...just incase.

Thanks all,

Command line:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL sysdm.cpl,,1
