"Computer Lockup problems"
Wed Dec-19-01 01:47 AM

My computer crashed and brought up the message that it couldn't find configmg and that i needed to restart my computer. The computer tried to start in safe mode but failed and went to the dos prompt. I ended up reinstalling windows. After the reinstall I had to delete and reinstall both my sound card and my video card to get them to work properly. I updated those drivers to the latest version. However the computer has been running very sluggishly ever since and is very prone to locking up. The lock ups occur most with the use of windows explorer and the task bar. Also MSN messenger now refuses to run properly and locks up the computer as well. I have run scan disk on the hard drive, disk defrag, and reg cleaner. I downloaded a trial version of Norton utilities and allowed it to run win doctor and disk doctor and implement its fixes. One of the most repetitive problems that keeps showing up is problems with ActiveX controls. The problems have been "fixed" or so the computer says. I have run both Mcafee and Norton antivirus and come up with no viruses. I have deleted unnecessary programs from the hard drive and upgraded my ram to 256k. I have cleaned out temp files and cookies and everything else I can think of. My multi media player will not play movies either. I am just about at wits end. As I mentioned I am freezing up when using the task bar to bring up the control panel or msconfig or other items through the task bar. I have run SFC. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled MSN messenger and still the machine hangs. I have tried using control alt del to close messenger and then the computer hangs up. What should I try next short of finishing my back up and reformatting and reinstalling Win98.

I have a 266 mz AMD processor and recently installed 256k RAM and am operating on WIN98 SE upgrade from WIN95. I have even blown out the inside of the case to try to make sure the machine is running cool.

Your help is appreciated

Hmm....This sounds like a problem I had with my old computer, which was a 233 mhz, Packard Bell. I tried to get Win98 working on it, but it was very testy. Lock-ups, device conflicts, etc. I talked to a friend and he said WIN98 is very unstable running on anything less a 300 mhz machine. Which makes a little more sense now that I've worked with it for awhile. I now run 98 on a 450mhz, Gateway Essential and I really haven't had too many issues with it. Other than a couple of blurps now and then, but that's usually because I'm messing with something. I would suggest staying with 95, as it is a mite more user friendly, at least in my opinion it is. I hope this helps you, or someone else can help you.

I've got win 98 on a p100, a little slow but no other problems.

edit:
In the long run Shelly is right. A lot less trouble and time spent and when your done you'll know you have a clean install.

Vera,

I am afraid you are right about the clean install. Was hoping it could be fixed easier. I do have one IRQ conflict, however, the modem that is conflicting is an unused 56k modem now and i have nothing on com port one.

Input/Output Range 03F8 - 03FF used by:
Communications Port (COM1)
Interrupt Request 04 used by:
Communications Port (COM1)

Thanks for the advice.

And as a side note I installed Norton after the problem started to check and see if it might find a virus McAfee had missed.

If I were in your situation, I would wipe the drive abd do a clean install. There are a lot of things you can try, but in the end it will take more time and more work than starting fresh.

Yes, I think a clean install is the way to go and when you install the antivirus program, DON'T put Norton and McAfee both on your computer. That's enough right there to screw things up. Pick one or the other (I'd opt for Norton).
That you scanned with both programs stuck out when I read it.

I scanned with both because I have seen one pick up a virus where the other has missed before. Thanks for the advice

And as a side note I installed Norton after the problem started to check and see if it might find a virus McAfee had missed.

When you clean install,do not use McAfee,it is a virus in itself.
