"Com port problems and modem"

I have had a system crash. A total wipe out!! and had to reinstall everything. Unfortunately I bought a system from VCS and as all know they no long exist. I have and Inteva PC-875 Pent.111 running Windows 98. All I received from them was a hardware driver cd with hundreds of drivers on it. I keep getting the message dial up networking cannot start. I'm told to restart my sytem and if problem persists to re-install dial up networking. How do I do this? My paperwork tells me that Dial-up Networking Adapter with TCP/IP protocol was installed. It also tells me that CMOS (Bios) configured. Com Ports Enabled/LPT1 set EPP/Cache's set/etc. My modem says it's on Com port 2 and I know it was on Port 1 to start with. How do I get it back to Port 1? Also what does EPP Printer port mean. My paper work tells me EPP Printer Port tested. My modem is supposed to be a Lucent Win Modem, 56k V.90. At least that's what my computer tells me it is. It was advertized as a US Robotics. I can't seem to find the right drivers. My system is a mes . Is there anyway someone can help me? How do I change Comports. My system Quality Control Check list tells me the following.
1. 450 MHz Intel Pentium 111 Processor w/MMX
2. 64 meg Ram,512 KB L2 Cache
3. 13 gig hard drive
4. 8 meg 64 bit 3D Intel based AGP Video Card and Software installed
5. 4.8 DVD Cd-Rom Operation & Accessibility Tested (Data & Music)
6.56k V.90 Modem Configured and Tested
7. Cmos (Bios) Configured. Com Ports Enabled/LPT1 set EPP/ CAche's set/ etc.
8.EPP Printer Port Tested
9. Dial-up Networking Adapter with TCP/IP protocol installed
Inteva Multimedia Software Collection Installed and Tested
10. VCD Multimedia Software Collection installed and Tested.
11. Windows 98 Printer Drivers installed
12. Creative Labs 3D Sound Card Operation Tested.

I don't know what to do. Nothing seems to be working at all right. I'm not worried about the extra software that was loaded just want my modem and Com Ports straightened out and able to use dial-up networking.

Thank Yo

Hi,Luv2BGrandMa:

You have a plate-ful of problems, some of which can be solved by searching for Dial-Up Networking in Windows Help files. I recall there is a detailed list for that there. On your BIOS Setup, if you do not have any guidelines in the form of a user's manual, I cannot help you much there except that if you know how to access BIOs Setup, you might be surprised by how much you know about your system. Certain ideas will occur to you regarding the various settings.

What I suggest as a first step is to study and implement the instructions in Windows Help for setting up your Dial-Up. From what you have written, I believe that you can manage that task yourself.

Check back here for more assistance from the real gurus.

Good luck and happy holidays.

Thak you so much for such a quick reply to my problems. I do have an Inteva manual. I know very little about computers and am learning by trial and error (MORE ERROR). When my system crashed I had to reformat Windows 98 and install. I do have as I said a hardware CD that was sent with my system but there are as I said hundreds of drivers on it. I received no manuals for my modem, video card, sound card, monitor or anything else that was on here so I don't know which models or versions of anything that was installed. I have gone through the "hardware driver cd and 1x1 have been able to get my monitor and sound and video working what seems to be okay. I had to buy and install a new printer as I could never get the Epson to work right so how have HP. I do know that the printer and scanner shared the same port and I'm almost positive that the modem was set up to Com Port 1. Now it is using Com Port 2. I have re-installed dial up networking but it doesn't seem to help. I'm ready to pull my hair out. I contacted my ISP (AOL) tech support and they are too at a loss as to what is going on and can't seem to help me. It takes my modem forever at times to connect always having to dial at least twice before it makes a connection.

I went into my device manager and I found this = Communications is set to Port (Com 1) and the Printer Port to (LPT 1). I went into dial-up networking and tried a reinstall but am still having the same problem.

All you people are so wonderful to try and help this dumb old lady out I know the problems I'm having I caused when I crashed my system. As I said it wiped my harddrive clean as a babies behind. A friend re-formatted and installed windows for me and I've been wearing out the hardware driver CD trying to find all the right drivers. Main problem in the Com Ports and my modem not working right and having to dial 2 & 3 times before it'll connect. I don't know if there was a network card on my system or not when I bought it from Video Personalities

I've had problems with win modems before. This is Shellys' response to a modem problem that probably would have helped my own problem.

Many modems require that you install the drivers first before installing the actual modem. Try deleting the modem from Device Manager in Safe Mode, shut down and reboot so Windows can redetect it.

This article I wrote for our How-To section probably contains a lot more than you really want to know, but it will give you a good idea of what all the terms we use refer to, and what the modem needs to function. http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/modem1.html.

Thank You. I went to the site you suggested and printed it out for refernce. There is never to much info when it comes to me and this damned computer. I'm learning by trial and error (MORE ERROR):-(
Everyone has been so wonderful in trying to help me. I'm the cause of the crash in trying to make windows start faster I totally wiped it off my harddrive and everything else along with it.
Thank You again

Did you remove the modem from Device Manager and then restart your computer? That should reinstall the modem in Com Port 2.

Ok, here goes, on your comm port question, that is not your problem. Modems are usually not going through comm one, that is most often reserved by Windows. Mine is on comm2, but I've added modems to my other computers and it ends up on comm 3 or 4, non-issue. The one I'm using now is on comm 2.

That's a nice speedy system. By saying you had to re-install everything, does that mean you formatted and re-installed Windows from scratch? Formatting would erase everything on the Hard drive (HDD). I'm not saying you should just asking.

Why don't you try a more conservative approach first. The CD with the drivers on it is Very helpful, guard it well. You may need it if you do complete format and install, not necessary yet.

The restart or you need to re-install dial-up networking (DUN) may not mean that literally as to the reinstall. Windows error messages can be cryptic at best. It may mean all you need to do is Make A New Connection. Here's how, using your sign up sheet you received from your ISP orginally:

Click (or double-click) on My Computer to open it; Click on DUN to open; Click Make New Connection; Follow the onscreen stuff, don't enter an area code, using the info on your ISP startup sheet.

Another REAL Good Way to go is CALL YOUR ISP'S TECHNICAL SUPPORT for connectivity issues like this. They'll help you setup a new connection fast and/or they can put your computer into SafeMode and uninstall DUN in the Network Control Panel; restart and then re-install it in the same area in Normal Mode.

Your system is probably Not a mess, you just don't know what's going on right now and/or how to resolve this issue, Ok? By the way, how are you posting here if your computer is a mess?

Please click on the attachment at the bottom of my post, I posted here in this message too, and Save it to Disk. Its got info in there as vital as all your other computer issues, really.

I don't see a problem with your computer, it looks like you just need to make a new connection and configure your browser to connect using that new one if it tests ok. Click on it in DUN when yer finished to see. You can delete your old connection and rename the new 'My Connection' in DUN if the new one tests out.
