Plextor, any speed. Plex makes a 24x, and it has been rated the best by Maximum PC. I have the 16x Plex, and an older 12x, both work flawlessly. Use NERO Burning Rom for your software, also considered by many to be the best.

24x may be fine for a PC that can handle it. More goes into burning than the speed of the drive. 16x may be a better deal overall since there really aren't any 24x CD-Rs out there to burn on. 16x seems to be the sweet spot for a while. Plextor is the best. I have a TDK 16x10x40 (MaximumPC says the internals are assembled by Plextor) and it will probably be a little easier to find locally than a Plextor. TDK makes a class product that installs easily and comes with Burn Proof and Nero (both a must).

Make sure your friend gets CDs with the proper speed (a CD rated at 4x is not going to burn at 16x).

Yamaha makes 24x CD-R's now, and a couple others are starting to.

System Compatability should be the deciding factor, I think. I have a Toshiba, but it came with the PC. Never had a problem. Switched to Nero's software.

Anyway, I would look at what your system can handle first. Like said earlier, fastest is not always the best rule of thumb.

Testors have rated Plextor as the best.

My idea would be to buy the fastest. the faster will burn at a slower rate if your comp isn't up to that speed. Then, when you upgrade your comp, the faster one will be already in place.

Burn Proof is hardware memory in the CD player that will act as a cache, or safeguard, to keep the PC from basically scrwewing up your recording (creating a coaster).

See posts above for recommendations on Brand and speed.

I have an external HP cd-writer 8200 series. It reads at multi speeds (I think 24X is it's max) and it also has several write speeds, though I find the 1X speed to perform the best with it.,

Actually No, Burn Proof is a technology developed and licensed by Sanyo that will slow down or even stop a burn until the cache refills so that you can't have a buffer under run. No more coasters!

From Iomega. Burn-Proof:

BURN-Proof is accomplished by a combination of hardware and firmware modifications within the drive control electronics. Since this feature is built into your ZipCD drive, no extra software is needed. Your ZipCD drive will automatically turn on and use this BURN-Proof feature each time you create a CD.

Full article:

http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/10576.html

Full explanation:

BURN-Proof

BURN-Proof (Buffer Under Run Error Proof) is a technology developed by Sanyo that allows compact disc (CD) recording to automatically stop in the event of an unplanned interruption and then to resume recording. BURN-Proof is a registered trademark of Sanyo.
When a CD is burned (recorded), the data must usually be written onto the CD without any interruption. If an interruption, such as the opening of a new application, does occur, a Buffer Under Run error occurs and the burn is unsuccessful. BURN-Proof technology located on firmware inside the CD-R or CD-RW drive monitors the recording process. If the drive detects a Buffer Under Run error, it suspends recording. When the problem is resolved, the CD-R or CD-RW drive restarts recording data from where it stopped.

BURN-Proof technology is used with CD drive speeds 12x and higher because Buffer Under Run errors occur more often with faster drives. Many CD recording application vendors provide BURN-Proof support with their software.

I've had my Plextor 24/10/40A for several weeks, and it is light years ahead of the HP 9510i that I replaced
