"Windows Protection Error everytime I boot up!"

Everytime I turn my computer on, a message that says "While initializing device VDMAD: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." Does anybody know what may be causing it and what can be done to fix it? I tried it with differen't hard drives and the same message popped up!

VDMAD = Virtual Direct Memory Access Device. The error could indicate a problem with bad memory. You should either test your memory, or if possible try running on one memory DIMM at a time to isolate any bad one.

In case memory is not the answer ...

What OS are you running.
Have you installed any software around the time the error started.
PCTools is know to have replaced VDMAD.386 that would cause errors like this.
