Sorry to hear you had a stroke. They are not fun..but recovery is possible, always keep that in mind. Don't sit and dwell on what happened. It happened period, accept that fact and move on. Your focus now should be recovery. Work on the things that broke. get a rubber ball for that hand to squeeze. Do whatever you can, but don't over do. Slow and easy wins the race. I spent more time than I like to remember pushing a walker, but today I don't need it. I still need a lot of fixes, and I'm working on them, but to me everyday is a new begining, and IMHO Anyone who survives a stroke should count their blessings, it could have been the end. So my friend it's good to see that you're still around, and able to post too. Don't give up don't get frustrated. Recovery is possible. There is one helpful thing that I have learned over the years...velcro is great and it sure beats the hell out of those darn shoe strings...Fred

You are one tough guy, John. You set a great example by your persistence and a great sense of humor. Nothing stops you or slows you down.

Your wife must be an exceptional person. Without her they probably would have locked you up and thrown they key away a long time ago.

Hang in there, John.

OMG take care of yourself. I went through a bad bout last year and lost my left side GRR! It wasn't a stroke but I got a PCA and she worked with me with a ton of exercises. She mentioned that a lot of the exercises I am doing she used with her stroke patients. I use putty. It is working so I keep doing it.Hang in there it does get better.

Hello OD,

I can identify with you in several ways...though not the stroke. We're nearly equal in age, I lived in the San Francisco Bay area 28 years (now live in Oregon), and your employer, Orchard Supply & Hardware is my favorite hardware store. I don't post very often but have read the posts almost daily in PC Q&A and PC911 before. I've noticed fewer and fewer posts by you in recent months, beginning before your stroke, and have missed them.

Reading about your stroke is horrible news and I certainly wish you a speedy and successful recovery.

Sincerely,
Duane

Old dude…………….

I also suffered a “mild” stroke last September. You have more nerve than I because I am just now ready to post again. I never was a regular poster anyway. The first few days after were scary but I am now back as before. (I think!) The first time I drove my pick-um-up truck afterwards was pretty interesting. I backed into a tree in my driveway – got out to see if anyone saw me and went on to the grocery store. (very slow and took extra caution.) So hang in there – it gets better

Old Dude, I know you are a tough old phart. That is a plus!

I have seen some who had a stroke just sit by and slowly go, and I have also seen those that went for therapy and fought back, and to this day, you'd never know that they had a stroke.

I know you will be the latter, and not the former.

We will keep you in our prayers. Go For It! Hauxfan!

I am sorry I missed this before, I followed a link from Janes post. I enjoy reading your posts Old Dude and want to point out that at least in my experience, it has been the "onery" characters that I have known that are the ones who "beat" this stroke stuff!! Keep On keepin' on!
Good Luck and Best Wishes!!!

Your doing fine and why worry about, you spell better than me anyway. Keep in there, your neural patterns will compensate if you just stay at it! Remember your worst day on the green side is still better than your best day on the brown side.

Well, at least your typing has improved

My girlfriend was an RN and she tells me that no matter how tough you think you are, you need rehab. She thinks being able to concentrate well enough to send your message this soon is a great sign. I told her that I was always surprised when you could concentrate well enough to formulate a message, but she didn't think that was funny.

Anyhow, stick with it, do the rehab, and you'll be back to all good in a surprisingly short time.

Don't know if you're a fan of LangaList, but thought you'd enjoy this one.

from Chris, writing from England:

If Operating Systems were Airlines

DOS AIR: All the passengers go out onto the runway,
grab hold of the plane, push it until it gets in
the air, hop on, and jump off when it hits the
ground again. Then they grab the plane again, push
it back into the air, hop on, etcetera.

WINDOWS AIRLINES: The terminal is very neat and
clean, the attendants are all very attractive and
the pilots very capable. The fleet is immense. Your
jet takes off without a hitch, pushing above the
clouds, and at 20,000 feet it explodes without
warning.

MAC AIRWAYS: Tickets are expensive. The cashiers,
flight attendants, and pilots all look the same,
feel the same and act the same. When asked
questions about the flight they reply that you
don't want to know, don't need to know, and would
you please return to your seat and watch the movie.

LINUX EXPRESS: Each passenger brings a piece of the
airplane and a box of tools to the airport. They
gather on the tarmac, arguing constantly about what
kind of plane they want to build and how to put it
together. Eventually, they build several different
aircraft, but give them all the same name. Some
passengers actually reach their destinations. All
passengers believe they got there.

Hope we see you soon.

What has that post got to do with this serious thread? We have an off topic forum to post that kind of thing in. Hijacking threads is extremely rude.

My apologies if communicating a joke to a friend who has appreciated them in the past annoyed you. Since I haven't seen him at work, I've missed the opportunity to communicate with him, and took this opportunity to do so. If you still find my communications offensive, again, I apologize.

But I won't stop 'til the gentleman I addressed asks me to

i just talked to old dude on the phone. he's doing fine and recovering nicely. he's sitting at home, doing nothing, and he doesn't like it, rather be busy. he's doing therapy to get his left hand back in business, and expects to be back at work in a few weeks.

he appreciates everybody thinking of him, sends his regards, and will be back online as soon as he has got his computer problems under control again.

if anybody wants to call him, please email me for his phone number if you don't have it. he said he'd be happy to hear from you.
